Re: Cheap 'hacked' timing system

Cant see that being a good suggestion? Firstly you have to ride with an Iphone.... and the accuracy of GPS is pretty useless, in smaller distances.

Cheap 'hacked' timing system

Hi, picked up a bargain timer from Maplin (electronics store in the UK) and modded it for single lane slalom timing, ideal for practice sessions. I have seen the same toy on other websites worldwide. http://youtu.be/qe-1ftGjUm4

New display clock for UK slalom

Just picked up an EBay bargain, a Seiko display clock, list price over £2000 (!), snagged, used for £65. All in working order. Works on batteries, and uses flip flopping mechanical sections to display numerals in a bright orange, so great visibility even in direct sunlight. We will be using this on ...

Finish line indicator

Just made a finish line indicator from two timer relays, two relays, tapeswitches and breakdown lights. Runs off 12v . First racer across line lights up their lane lights, locking out the other lane for 30 seconds. No need to re-set. http://youtu.be/erzyEji7zcQ

Speed Trap

Just for fun, now that the Formula One start system has proved its worth in competitions this summer I'm building a 'speed trap'. Partly for slalom and downhill, but also for use for some TV shows where I have been used to do 'official' timing with my systems. This will show a racers speed at a poin...

I'm not travelling anywhere for two practice runs. (And I won't poach extra ones either). Set the course the day before. Use a local, a foreigner and someone who is respected to set the course together. Keep the course open for a fixed time period. One hour would be nice. Get in line. Put the cones ...

The refurbed ramps (re-paint, checked welds, new rear wood platforms, new handlebar tape) at Hog Hill last weekend. It was a rainy day on Sunday so using stainles metal ramps is a good choice, we can leave them out and not worry. The pic shows the timer clocks on black stands, and a third black box ...

I dont have any time on my hands thanks Wes. I work damn hard and do this for fun. The system you like so much gives rise to tons of false starts. Some races they do the dumb adding of false start penalties, thats no fun for me. I have to disagree that the random start is like watching paint dry, I ...

Still dont like that system. Its not the light per se, its the introduction of reaction times and a standard beep start. As I have explained a random start cuts down on False starts significantly. It also means racers attending races do not need to learn the local beep system. Every racer is on a le...

A couple of things I don't like about the drag tree lights is they light downwards... Just seems ' wrong' to me. A race start is pyschcologically a build UP or a crescendo... So lights going downwards seem odd to me. Next , on a drag start the beeps are at a pre defined sequence with no random start...

Yes, I have looked at the Drag Racing trees, interesting proposition. I decided against using that system as I didnt understand it. I know they do a staggered start which I really don't like. I think they could possibly have a place in slalom, but I do prefer the dual start method for races. Also we...

A few reasons Wes... I know two UK rCers who are colour blind... Also this mimics a Formula One start sequence. Actually the green light on the last light would not be correct as you don't go on when the last light lights.... But when it extinguishes after a random interval of zero to five seconds. ...

Yeah, I see the problem. With the price of LCD panels coming down hopefully something will improve for races. But for practice you probably wont have mains power. I feel visable screens really add to to fun at practice and race sessions. Hopefully someone clever can do something with the track mate.

The system output to a US telephone cable plug and wire, which they use to carry the switch input and the power from the 9v to the normal IR bean unit. If you want a system for pratice, the RU Ready screens are great. Clear and running off 9v battery. combined with two tape switches and wire you have a great practice system, and we use it for our races. At the end of each run the time is displayed. When the next rider takes his run he resets and st...

It would be inline with the first cones or just back from there.

Racers will clearly see the lights (very bright) or if head down wait for the beep, which is placed by the hand grips on the ramp.

Unless you have tunnel vision (skate pun intended!)...you'll be fine.

Is the start beep a random beep, after the 5 lights? Yes, just like F1. The lights stay lit for 1-4 seconds and extinguish at the same time as sounding the beepers and starting the clocks.
