Is there any one place where a lot of the riders will be staying? I haven't yet booked any lodging--Donald has assured me he'll help--but I thought it might be good to stay near some other racers, just to be sociable, so I've been looking around a bit online. "Haus Jud" in Reith im Alpbachtal looks ...

Wow, you guys can argue just as bad as Americans. ;-) (Note: I'm not referring to Ramon's post directly above; I mean some of the previous ones.) Is it the board or the rider? It's both. Overall, I think it's more the rider and how much s/he practices that matters (advantage: Jadranko), but a good b...

I think we can pull that off. Looks like we won't have a ton of racers, so it should go pretty quickly. We have the hill starting at about 10:00 and can probably start setting up earlier than that. I'll put it to you the way Eddy put it to me about this year's Texas race: If you come, we'll get you ...

For the last few years, most races in the USA--most ramp-start races at least--have used the "beep" method of starting. One notable exception was the 2004 West Virginia race (a push-start race) at which Dave Gale gave the racers a "Racers Ready!" signal and then said "Go!" sometime within five secon...

Sorry for the late reply. STL seems to be under a bad luck cloud lately. Goad had broken ribs from snowboarding, Seeger messed up his ankle a while back, Graf has had all sorts of crap happen--car troubles, barn roof getting blown off, etc., and I've been in school and in & out of relationship hell....

Sounds perfect. That's a very good setup. Should you decide you want to race or to practice on some gnarlier hills, see if you can get in touch with Lynn Kramer. You can send her a PM via this forum. She lives in the San Diego area somewhere. She's very friendly, a great racer and race organizer, an...

I just saw a hilarious "Top 5" list--two of them, actually. Here's the first one. If you're not familiar with Christianity, you probably won't get 'em. I'm a recovering Lutheran, so I think they're hilarious. Warning: If you don't think joking about religion is appropriate, you probably won't like t...

How tight should the cones be? How many cones do courses usually have? How tight depends on how steep the slope is and what type of course you want to set. If you made the 7-footers first try, and soon made 6-footers easily, either a) you've got a nicely set up board with loose trucks and a short w...

I just don't agree with Jonathan that we should revert to qual time in case of a DQ. There's no need for that. Obviously a DQ is slower than the slowest time in that round. If there are more than one DQ, we'd just use the "second" run (as we always do two runs each in each round). If there's still ...

In an ideal world, I'd vote for Method D, because it is the closest to "similar conditions" or however JG put it. In a pinch, I'd vote for Method B, as it seems the simplest way to rank racers based on their actual times. Method D advantages: *IF* we can revert to qualifying time in the event of a D...

St. Louis
I have no comment on what status this year's St. Louis race should have. But for the record, it's being planned for the last weekend of MAY--just as it has been the past three years--not September. I have no idea where that September date came from. I also don't want to speak for Goad, who is more t...

2006 Olympic snowboarding
So far, racing hasn't started and halfpipe has already ended. Speaking of halfpipe, did anyone else nearly s**t their pants while watching Kelly Clark's last run? Ben, I think Torino is +1 GMT, meaning one hour earlier than Greenwich Mean Time. USA Eastern time zone is -5 GMT, which is a six-hour difference. So 8:00 p.m. in Torino equals 2:00 p.m. EASTERN time. For you & me, that's 1:00 p.m. Central time. http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?m...

Etienne, I think Donald may be "pulling your chain" a bit. :-) Blake, what kind of board are you riding? If it's a cutaway, i.e. very narrow in the rear, then Etienne's stance advice may actually help, as the flexy boards of that type seem to have been designed to be ridden with more of a centered s...

That offset rear truck will likely help quite a bit, especially if you've been riding stock "standard" trucks. Overall, it sounds like you've given it some thought. Keep noticing what happens. Shihan, your school's prohibition against skateboarding on campus is bullshit. It may be technically legal, i.e. it may be within the school's rights to ban it, but it's not morally right or defensible. The act of riding a skateboard is no more inherently dangerous than the act of riding a bike. If ...

Absolute times vs. differential times
This was prompted partly by the discussion on http://www.slalomskateboarder.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=33514 Question for Jack Smith: At races like the 2005 Worlds, did the software actually record the “absolute” times, or did it ONLY record the differences? Here’s why I ask. Regardless of what placi...
