All told, this is a pretty small ramp. Compared to the guy in the video, I estimated the base box of the ramp to be about 17-19" tall. Given that, I did some mock ups. My Chi+ill board is setup up on the shortest wheelbase. Contact point to contact point of the wheels measures 23.5" When I put a boa...

Re: The Ipad... it might be the PDA I've been looking for.
You can network them to provide times at the top, bottom, and even a middle split time... at all points of the course. Maybe I am missing something, but how does the ability to network them together somehow allow them to pull timing information from the racer? Even at $125 or whatever, I think you ...

Shoes. The single most important piece of slalom equipment?
I've been practicing slalom/pumping for a while now, and being new to the sport- I've discovered that pumping really hurts my feet, specifically my heels and arches. I am pretty sure I already know the answer to my question, but I wanted to hear everyone's opinion anyway. When I forget my skate shoe...

Interesting thread. Here's my opinion as a newbie (and I'm 27- so I guess I fit the bill of "20- something year old"). I've considered hosting an event. I have access to a soapbox derby track that has a pretty decent surface, is pretty steep, should be FAST, and is 1/4 mile away from a fairly nice p...

One thing you can try is: Right click the program -> Properties -> Compatiblity tab -> enable "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)" -> OK Another thing to check- When running the application, open the Task Manager. The application name should end in "*32" if it is...

Soapbox Derby hill practice
This is a repost from the Midwest forum section, but I doubt anyone will care. I found a local soapbox derby hill and did some practice last night there. Actually, I have been wrestling with the idea of hosting an event on this hill. Let me know if you guys think it looks like a good venue for an ev...

I went to the soapbox hill this evening after work and took some video. The hill is so fast... I simply don't have the skill for it. I went down to an area that had perhaps a 2% grade, and set up 20 cones (which is all I have).
I am splicing all the video segments now, and will upload later tonight.

I didn't see your first reply. Yeah- I am excited to go to the events around here (or even remotely around here) but they are all in the fall... Yes sir- that's the spot! The track is in pretty good condition (I wouldn't call it excellent- as in freshly paved) but certainly good condition. It's really fast... I got pretty nervous just "bombing" it on the slalom board. Well, add to that the fact that I haven't been over 40mph on a skateboard ...

Yeah, I didn't really consider traveling- especially to KY. It's not that far... Maybe if I went down there once or twice- then those guys would come up here the next time. Indianapolis has the nation's oldest (and I think longest) soap box derby track which appears to be open to the public. I've sk...

Major/Main/Prime/Basic/etc means...?
This seems like such a basic question. Every single slalom skateboard event (at least sanctioned by ISSA) has to be sanctioned as one of these statuses. Yet I have looked for hours on this forum now and can not find out what the definition is for each of these brandings! Can this be made into a stic...

Not a bad point about the front mounts. They probably could use just one bolt for both the deck and truck. The mockup was just to show the idea. I think if I made it in reality (which I plan on) then it will likely have a similar concept the the rail system by khiro, though with the ability to mount...

Re: Regardless of size...
I've always thought of rules being a guideline to those who are not completely familiar with our sport. Good, clear rules will help organizers do the right thing in an event and avoid some of the first-time errors that we've seen here and there. This provides for a much more appreciated event by al...

My personal experience is that the current rules were very helpful in helping me define how a start ramp should be made. I copied off of Eric Brassard's design: http://www.slalomskateboarder.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=3613 But having the rules specifically define the ramp (especially specifying the m...

Thanks- I am very happy with how it turned out. Some very minor modifications from the original, though: 1) I used many more 2x4 supports on the platform section than the plan called for (I think I used 7 as opposed to 3) 2) The platform legs are the same width as the platform itself. This is a devi...
