Dovercourt Races 2008

Post by Sebastien Leger » Tue Feb 05, 2008 4:09 pm

Hi Claude and MB,

Are we going to have a 5th Annual Dovercourt open this year? If you do, is it going to be the week-end before or after Canada day?

Let use know so we can add it to the race calendar.

Cheers!

Can't remember on which forum this discussion took place, but since July 1st is on a tuesday this year Claude asked if people wanted the race on the June 28-29th weekend or the July 5-6th weekend. And if my memory is right, most people who answered chose July 5-6th...

Let's wait for Claude to shime in and tell us what's up...

Dovercourt Open!

Post by Claude Regnier » Thu Feb 07, 2008 6:47 pm

At this point we are not sure what we are doing. Over the last 6 years we have run 7 slalom events in Ottawa with little to no support from the Slalom community outside of the racers themselves.

We have spent thousands of $$$ from the Ottawa Sk8park supporting the races in the past. This year as we have no park we are not sure where to pull the money from. As MB and I have basically worked for free or (not the race (that's always free) the sk8park operation)very little $$$ and have been left with a substantial debt from the sk8parks operation and closing, I am not sure what to do.

We are considering a 1 Day July race on Canada Day. We do have a crew that will meet to discuss the other options avaiable to us. Dovercourt is fully supportive of anything we choose to do however. They have already asked us and said they would step-up their support if needed.

So for now that is all I have to say. We will let you know what is happening as soon as we reach a descision.

Thank you for the support guys. It is likely we will not host it as the Canadian Nationals if someone would like to pick up the ball please go ahead.

First let me say thank you Claude. I know it is hard work and you've done a great job. My family has enjoyed our trips to Ottawa greatly. I think we all owe you a lot.

Secondly, I've been begging my Frenchy friends to throw a summertime race in Montreal or Quebec. Is this the kick in the pants that you guys need to step up?

Mig, Pierre, Danilo, Seb, Rookie, Ian, Julie, Emilie, Raylene, EBoy, Boris, JF, and more right?

You've got a lot of shoulders to spread this work on.

Whata ya say guys? I already have a sponsor lined up from Montreal (seriously).

I would also like to thank C and MB for their selfless support of slalom in Canada(and the world). I would love to come back to Ottawa this year to race. If the Nationals take place somewhere else thats fine, but Ottawa will always be the heart of our community. Thanks again for so many years of racing! From the Post Office garage to many great years of racing on Dovercourt. Some of my fondest memories.

Anyway, enough sappy stuff. Throw another race if you can do it. Ill help if I can.

Like Joe and Civ said, thank you very much Claude for all you've done for slalom and skating in general. My first race since the 70's was Dovercourt. It changed my life and I will never forget it. If you put on any size event, I'll be there and Fullbag will support it.

The Frenchies haven't done anything as big as you guys (Claude and Joe), but it's not like we haven't done anything either. In the past couple of years we have put on several very well organised outlaws in Montreal and Quebec City, 2 races at the Naphte Meetings in Quebec, and without Pierre in Montreal and all the Krispy Hill Racing Team from Quebec there wouldn't be any slalom at the Top Challenge (they provided the venue and prize money, but we did run ALL the slalom events). All of this advertised and very well documented on several forums.

That being said, we have been contacted just before christmas by a local longboarder who is involved in what seems to be a big sports festival in a small town 20 minutes from Quebec City. He told us he managed to obtain money, advertising, volunteers, and sponsors to hold a slalom race and a slide contest at that festival (june 13-16). That town is built on a hillside! He asked us (KHRT) to run the slalom event.

I haven't heard from him since then but I just sent him an email. This could easily be turned into the Canadian Championships. I will keep you all posted when he answers me...

Mig,

I didn't mean to imply you haven't done anything. Far from it.

I've been telling all my skate pals about how much fun I have when I come to Montreal / Quebec. What I mean is your Province is due for a destination race. One that would attract slalom racers and their families.

Nooo, noo, noo Joe!!! I didn't take it badly at all! I'm sorry if I sounded rude or offended! I truely wasn't. I probably didn't choose the right words or phrasing. I just wanted to say that we have enough experience for something bigger.

Man, that's one more time I wish I was better at expressing myself in english... :(

It's my turn to thank you Claude and Mary-Beth for all those good races and fun events you organized for us throught the years. I will be fun to see you guys at our events, coming just for fun and no work for a change!

I think it's time for us to do something, with the Québec and Montréal crews we are now capable of pulling it off.

Mig, the guy you are talking about is in Portneuf?
He asked me soething similar a few years ago but he never followed up.
Maybe this time he is ready.

Let's meet soon and talk!

Cheers!

I don't think it's the same guy... I just heard from my contact. I'll start a new thread on the skateordie forum later to get this ball rolling amongst our crew and report here later with the results.

He basically told me they are very interested. They even scoped out a hill and invited me to go there and spot some others.

Claude:
Although I haven't been out to any Dovercourt races, your race was the one I was working toward attending as my first big one. I was just working on getting good enough to compete... This year it was in my sights! Oh well, thanks for all you have done, I guess what I mean is your efforts have even inspired racers that weren't even there. Thank you!

Quebec crew: if you guys take it over....PLEASE set it up for either July or August, I really want to attend the Canadian Nationals. I'm a teacher, if it's in the summer months, I can travel midweek and take advantage of those cheap Westjet flights.

Hey isn't it Quebec City's birthday this year? Maybe they want a race? I still dream of racing on the grand allee.

Otherwise Montreal is easier for everyone to get to.

Regardless, I'm sure I can figure out someway to help out too.

Interested US citizens shoulod get their passports now.

Dovercourt 2008!

Post by Claude Regnier » Mon Feb 11, 2008 3:54 pm

Folks, MB and I owe you all a great deal of Thanks. Last year was such a sweet site fore me watching all the races from the bottom and seeing all the new talented Canadians.

I've waited a long time for that. It was for sure the best yet. By the end of the season Canada was represented in the Wolrds by the most slalomers since the worlds in '86.

We do hope to continue with something we are just not sure at this moment. Things have just gotten kind of ugly, let's say. Not in the Slalom world, couldn't ask for better, really.

We cerainly hope to see you at some races maybe even one of our own. All I can say right now is we will let you know if and when things get firmed up or not as soon as possible.

Chris, nice to hear you were planning to attend. I will suggest to anyone though not to wait till you get better. You will get better quicker by attending some races or events.

We always get a good crew of US riders here as well and you guys know how much that means to everyone so Thanks to you all as well from everyone North of the thing they call a border, LOL.

FYI for those who don't already know...I now live in NORTHERN Southern Canada (aka Burlington, VT). So...include me in your plan-making and I'll do what I can to help. I am pretty flat-out snowboard racing until the Nationals are over on April 6th - but probably can find a free weekend in March if a meeting needs to be held, or even a phone call sesh.

I've done this a ton already, but will do it again - Claude et MB, Mig, Seb, Pierre et Joelle, Civ, KHRT, Rookie, Raylene and everybody else...MERCI BEAUCOUP! Voyez-vous bientôt!!

It's on!

Post by Claude Regnier » Fri May 02, 2008 6:13 am

After some deliberation we will run the 5th Annual Dovercourt Open.

It will be a ONE day - Two race EVENT - Hybrid and Tight

No Sanctions - No Points -

The possibility still exists for it to be the Nationals however.

The Official races will be held on Tuesday July 1, 08

I will have it added to the NCDSA.com contest calendar when I return from Paris.

For anyone that wants to travel in we will be running some other races on this new road we have found. If allows for a decent GS, excellent Hybrid and Tight single lane only.

We also need to visit Legacy.

Bummer - I won't make it if it is held on a weekday...unless my job lets me trade July 4th for July 1st as a day off. Maybe I can tell them I'm part Canadian and it is an important religious holiday or something.

Canadian Championships!!!!

Post by Claude Regnier » Mon Jun 02, 2008 1:31 am

Guys, is there anyone that has the remote possibility on running an event this year where we can hold the Canadian Championships?

We can do it at Dovercourt but if someone else can and will we will let it go for this year.

We do not want the battle to end. Previous to hosting it I last defended the tittle in '90. We need to keep it going. If no one thinks they can do it we will but the prizes will be nothing fancy.

We are finalizing the poster and need the event sponsors and event schedule to de firm.

Thanks, your opinions are greatly appreciated.

5th Annual Dovercourt Open

Thanks to Claude, MB, and all the volunteers (Paul and Dan in particular) for putting on another great event that's as much fun to attend year after year.

A vid of the racing day done by Julie:
(Notice Claude and Louis pump UP the course to celebrate their final run in the Hybrid :D)
YouTube - The 5th annual Dovercourt Open

Here's young Riley Schroeder crashed out on his couch after a full day of racing. Riley won a Fullbag TS for the "Most improved skater".
I think he likes his prize... A boy and his board!

I would like to thank and congratulate all Fullbag riders at the Dovercourt Open (Team or otherwise) for their performances and improvements. Everyone rode great and we all had a fantastic time! Image

Looks like fun - glad it went off well for everyone. Congrats to les habitants du podiume!

That pic of Riley with the board is too much! Hope to see some of you at the Howard Attack.

Really sorry I couldn't make it this year...next time. :-(

Thank you Pierre! You know it our pleasure.

This years race was certainly less stressful then any other year and I was even able to race.

We have such a great canadian crew here we just couldn't let it go. The only real pieces missing from the event other our favorite canucks were our American friends that usually attend.

This years mid week schedule hurt in that sence but we did have an amazing time. Things went so well after we got going :)

Thanks everyone and Pierre your protoshop (or whatever you use) is amazing as always. I guess it's back to the printer, LOL.
