There will be a Skateboard Timeline for the Washington DC Area (DC,VA,MD,PA,DE,NJ,WV,etc.) created at the 4th Annual Vintage & Longboard Skateboard Day http://www.ncdsa.com/contest_registrati ... testID=117 sponsored by Surfrider Foundation's Washington DC Chapter http://surfrider.org/capitol/.
Basically the skateboard timeline will be a long sheet of pater 2 foot by 50 foot taped on the wall with years listed on the top from 1950 to Current Day. *****ALL SKATEBOARDERS WILL BE INVITED TO WRITE ON THE PAPER ANY LOCAL SKATEBOARD HISTORICAL EVENT.******
For Example:
Circa 1972 "lbk first Learns to Skateboard on a brand new Mustang 15 skateboard with clay wheels"
Circa 1974 "The Urethane Skateboard Wheel is invented in Purcellville, VA"
Circa 1977 "Chris Chaput signs with Belair Skateboard Company located in Belair, MD, hence the popular 'Chapstick' Skateboard and 'Lip Bomb' wheels"
Circa 1978 "Annandale Halfpipe built and is one of the best ramps of the day on the East Coast"
Circa 1978 "Crofton Skatepark opens"
Circa 1981 "Cherry Hill Skatepark closes"
Circa 1982 "Crofton Skatepark Closes but is skated until demolished a year or two later"
Circa 1983 "lbk & friends enter the US Open Snowboard Championships in VT, Tom Sims wins the contest riding his board in a wetsuit"
Circa 2001 "Vans Potomac Mills Skatepark built, opening day includes the likes of Tony Alva to Tony Hawk"
Circa 2001 "Surfrider Foundation's 1st Annual Vintage & Longboard Day. Vintage equipment displayed, $2,000 dollars deal rumored to have gone down in the parking lot for vintage gear, small bowl jam contest"
Circa 2001 "GBJ Reintroduces Slalom Skateboarding to the DC area with a get together of slalomers traveling in from CA to the East Coast to England. The event is called 'the Gathering'"
Circa 2001 "GBJ Hosts DC Summer Nights Race- 1st place Chris Chaput, 2nd Place Jack Smith....."
Circa 2002 "Brian Parsons starts the DC Outlaw Slalom Skateboard Race Series and holds them thru 2003"
You got the idea.....
Try to think of any locally important skateboard dates, no matter how little significants you may place on it because everything is important, and then come on out to the Vintage Day and help fill in the historical data for the DC Area Skateboard Timeline. If you can't make it to the event, post up some milestone you know of for the DC Area Skateboard Scene.
Thanks,
DR
