You might be able to commuter train it from BWI all the way to downtown G'burg, at that time of day. You'll most likely have to change trains at union station in DC Check out your options when you land.

Anybody else flying into Baltimore BWI Friday night for the Gathering? I will arriving at 5:10pm and headed for Gaithersburg hopefully in time for the Park and Ride Race. If interested in hooking up for transportation to Gaithersburg let me know. Also if anyone driving past BWI around this time, come pick me up!

Yep, I got the ice pack going right now. Good seeing Aaron charging the course. Also it was great to see Jeff Boswell riding after a couple of decades off. He even took a spill but because he had pads and a helmet on, he was able to shake it off and race. Jeff, you got to skate with us at our practice sessions so we can get you up to speed on the Vlad hell courses.

Damn it! You guys can find the way to bring everyone’s times within a couple of hundreds! If things progress (regress actually) at the same rate, there will be a 2-cone course set at the next race and Avila will be considered a “tight slalom” wheel!

Hey, whatever it takes to promote “slalom” to the masses. It was fun racing and playing with my longboard set-ups. I actually spent more time adjusting everything then WesE and a couple of times had MAJOR butt-terflies. Too much of them in the last round. My anus jammed from all the pressure and I f***** lost it.

Of course no one came within 0.02 (or is it 0.00002) seconds to the fastest time of the day, which is, like, light years on this challenging course. The challenge on this course was to push to the 4th cone, instead of pushing to the 3d, and that’s where I ***d up.

Ben is probably the fastest guy on longboard courses. He sure will be one if he practices that kind of skating. But will he?

I never knew you could have so much fun racing on a 15 cone course. Leo that guy with the Fibreflex and PVD is none other than the dreaded Vlad. He was searching for a set up that would work for him. Too bad he never found it. J

This course was difficult to get the setup wired. Ben was riding a ridged custom Little Tree longboard made locally by Jason T. with I think Indys and Avalons. Ohm was on a Ick with Avalons. I was the only guy riding Avilas. I lost it in the start. The Avilas are super fast once they get rolling but took about 6-7 counes to really get rolling. If there were 5 or 6 more cones in this course the Avilas would have given me a huge advantage.

I actually qualified faster than Vlad. And preceded to dance around shouting "I qualified faster than Vlad"

Arron Morris, a 14 year old from Norfolk Virginia beat several of the DC regulars. Arron is riding for Team Turner and is solid middle of the pack East Coast racer. Watch for him at the Gathering.

Thanks Zion for throwing in a pool deck for the winner and some t-shirts and thanks to BOZI for the wheels and bushings.

Leo, we used Brian's timer (TrackMate). It was just a fun race/club race. I can think of ways to run the race without a timer. Oh, and the fiberflex and PVD's were Vlads.

Just got back from the ER (I don’t have a regular Doctor and the walk in clinic I used to go to is closed). Doctor said nothing is broke (I hoped for that) but he said it might be ligament damage (not too good because this is the same knee I blew out the ACL 5 years ago). He told me at the least to stay off the skateboard for a week and see how the swelling is. If it is not better then I got to see the specialist. My discharge papers from the ER actually say to wear pads. Damn WesE, did you call ahead and tell him to put that in my file? Oh and my head looks like I got beat up in the boxing ring.

Jeff, you got it, it was a "Rebel Yell Run" (aka party wave).

Wesley look closely at the last photos. The Woodridge Park & Ride has some good lines but if you fall without pads look out for a real meat grinding not to mention a nice bump on your head. As I sit here oozing from my stinging wounds and worry about going to sleep with a head injury. Live & learn, die & get buried.

It was a down hill course and you could make it through without extra pumping. I did see some double & tripple pumping but it didn't seem to beat the strong single pump.

Was this course downhill? How long was the push start? I'm not being critical, but I don't know if I could pump and keep up my speed on 12-foot centers on flat. That's a long way between wiggles! That's double, maybe even triple pump distance.

Zion Slalom Race & Skate Jam

RESULTS

1st Ben Ashworth (Ben got second at the NYC Red Bull Banked Slalom)
2nd Vlad (DQ’d in the finals against Ben)
3rd Ohm (fastest qualifier)
4th Brian Parsons (tied as fastest qualifier but had a slower 2nd qual run than Ohm’s)

Rally Race Winner (closest to match my time on a leisure run): Mike Ohm won a set of Turner Red Wheels and Pleasure Tool Bearings donated by Bozi Boards.

RULES

Course: Dual lanes 15 cones straight-line on12 foot on center so all could run including newbies.

DQ Rule: 2 cones = DQ.

Cone Time Penalty: None

Qualifier: Best of two runs.

Bracket: 16 man (after a run off of last 4 racers to get down to 16).

Head to Head Racing: Pure single elimination. Race the guy you are bracket up with once down (not twice) and the winner moves on.

Had a great time at the Park and Ride race with the Dc outlaw crew.

I took some pictures that I will post on here later tonight or tomorrow. I just got home and I am tired after a 3 hour plus ride home.

also I LOST MY HELMET at the race. Just before I left when I was talking with the guys I laid my Dull metal looking blue Protec helmet down neXt to everyone's boards. Like a dummie I walked off and forgot it. I hoe someone picked it up and mayeb I can get it back this coming Friday at the Park and Ride at Gaithersburg. If so I would be most appreciative. Otherwise I will have to fork out more money for a helmet that fits a big head. .

Brian, can you bring your timer for Zion’s race on Sunday? Wish I had Mitch’s Brower timer or one of Curt’s timers so we could do a big long sweeping longboard (or any board goes) slalom race as well. There is a mellow pitched access road that loops around the Park & Ride that would be perfect for a race that even the newbies could run without risk of going too fast. There might even be a way to set up Brian’s timer because the road is a sloping circle and the start line and the finish line are within a short distance. I would imagine that the fastest times would be well over a minute.

Ohm, that would be news to me about Zion, not to say I condone that behavior or even think they sell that kind of stuff; however, when I started to get into skateboarding big time in the early 1970’s, the only place you could buy skateboards in my Houston neighborhood was at the local head shop. My parents are as straight laced as they come but they were cool enough to let my brother and me shop there as long as we stayed away from the wrong counter.

David the 123 event sounds good to me. I live ten minutes from there. An easy course might be better for me at this time. Lots of cobb webs to work out you see!!! Dave and everyone else, Each event should be given its own specific topic. Otherwise, this “Other DC Events” topic will require sifting through each page in order to see the info for an event. It just makes it easier for everyone to find and to initially notice if they can see the name of the event right on the index of the DC forum. “DC Sessions” is different in that there is no need to look at anything other than the most-recent page.

Zion Skate Shop Slalom Race
(Sunday 4/27/03 Woodbridge, VA)

Late last night I got the news that a slalom race is going to be held at the Park & Ride in Woodbridge, VA (next to I-95 1 or 2 exits north of the Vans Skatepark). This will be the third year Zion has put on the contest. If true to form, the race will be an easy course. Not sure of the exact contest time but I think it will start about noon.

Show up to support the mainstream skateboard community's attempt to slalom.

BTW,
The year I was there, they did a high jump contest as well.
