Cold but dry weather made for an awesome race in DC this Saturday. With several newbies showing up I decided to run a duel longboard race so these new guys could get additional runs in racing head to head. Like usual we had several guys make the long distance trip. Wesley Tucker is now becoming a DC regular as well as Gary from Lynchburg and Burnes from Virgina Beach.

There were some great match-ups in the B-Class for both longboard and hybrid. Anthony Smallwood and Anthony Flis duked it out all day meeting each other in the finals in both races. Another great match up was Jeff Bozwell and Jeff Bozi.

Kyle Bozi has been stepping up his racing by making the A-Class is both races. I had to race Kyle in the first round of the longboard race. He had me really worried, staying right with me until the last 5-6 cones.

Mike Ohm, like usual was able to stay ahead of everyone, never loosing a head to head race all day. However, the story of the day is young Aaron Morris. Arron qualified in 2nd place just .18 slower than Mike. As I was doing the bracketing I realized that Arron and I would meet in the finals. 1st run I got the jump on Arron out of the box. I had a .45 advantage going into the 2nd race. Arron was not going to give up anything. 2nd run Arron and I crossed the finish line at exactly the same time 13.879 but I had hit two cones, Arron was clean. Walking back up the hill I was thinking that I had been beat. When we got to the top and I realized that I had took Aaron by only .05. I felt kind of bad for Arron because he really wanted it bad but I was relieved that I saved face and didn’t let the youngster beat me.

Mike beat me for 1st, Arron beat Wes for 3rd.

Thanks to everyone for helping out yesterday. I promise that I will get my timing problems worked out before the next race.

Andy set yesterday’s course and it was a really great course. Very technical and challenging. I have been racing on my courses for so long it was refreshing for me to get to race a course that was set through someone else’s eyes. We need to talk Andy into setting more courses.

The next Outlaw slalom race will be on March 6th. This is a week later than previously planned due to the weather delay. We will make a decision on location once we see what the weather is going to do.

Remember the Downhill race next Sunday the 22nd.

It was a great day. It might've been a little cold, yeah, but I have decided that, barring any wind difficulties, I like it like that better than Summer heat.

Thanks again, Brian.

Thanks to Andy for stepping up with the great course.

Thanks to everyone that showed up. To the ones who didn't, where are your priorities? (just kidding).

Thanks for the fresh Kryspy Kream donutz, Seth.

are those times right? some that placed higher appear to have slower times than the rider just below them in placing.

And for this reason I cannot understand why there are not more races in places like CA and FL during the winter.

It is great that you DC guys are pulling off these races on a regular basis.

The times are correct. But they were just used for creating the seeding of the duals so they really don't mean that much beyond that.
A few skaters won't go as fast as possible for their own strategies (or goofy reasons).

Maybe the times are before cone penalties?

It was really nice to see so many faces there, we where missing 1/2 the regulars, but with all the newer fellows, still had a nice show. This summer will be great with all the racers around now, maybe we'll have another race that drags til midnight agian.

Thanks all, Jeff

Another great day with the DC Crew.

Post by David Morris » Mon Feb 16, 2004 3:23 pm

I had another really fun day rsacing with all the DC Crew. the weather was surely better than the last race we had at Fountainhead when the temperatures were only in the 30s.

Too bad for the rest of the crew that missed the race on the 14th as it was a really good one. Everyone is racing better all the time.

Like brian said there were some really close races on Saturday. Since I have been attending the DC Oulaw races some of the races were some of the closest I have yet to see. I think everyone had a really great time. Slappy, Aaron, and myself treated ourselves to some of those giant fat boy Burritos at Chipotle's after the race. great time.

Below is a URL link to the race where Brian Parsons and Aaron Morris went head to head right down to the finish line. Both racers almost look like they are part of some Rogers and Hammerstein choreographed dance routine.

It was a most interesting day and I just cannot wait until it finally warms up again so we can race in some warm weather.

Post by Andy Bittner » Mon Feb 16, 2004 5:59 pm

Nice video, Dave. I think it kind of summed things up nicely. The gray skies, the snow on the ground and two, full-on, charging racers in a pretty hot heat. I'd like to see some of the footage being shot by the cameraman riding down the center of the course. Is that Anthony? It's a subtle thing about the video, but if you watch closely, he has to take a significant push to keep up with these two slalomers, even riding in a straight line in a tuck.

That course turned out way better than it had any right to be. I wasn't planning on setting a course, I wasn't thinking about setting a course, and I probably didn't give that course as much attention as I could have. The fact that it turned out to be an enjoyable course was purely luck. It had that wierd, little, short gate right there around 2-3, 3-4... I called it "Alfred Hitchcone", the funny, little, short guy. If I'd had more time to think about it, I'm pretty sure that cone wouldn't have been there.

It was awesome getting out to skate after being cooped up in the basement all winter.

It was cool making Wes E work to beat me for the first time in a year. Funny, but I got back on RTXs and shaved off a half second. Hmmm.

Also VERY cool seeing new faces on the hill.

It's gonna be a very cool year.

Thanks Brian P for making the effort.

(By the way, you left early when you beat Aaron, but no worries, It's our secret)

Yeah, the guy riding in the center or the action with video camera in hand is Anthony Smallwood. Anthony rides with such confidence and coolness right in the middle of any action. It's something I know I couldn't do and he does it with style too!

I would like to see the video Anthony was shooting yesterday too.

Had a great time. Thanks Brian.

Last nite I cleaned out my computer, made some space and finally threw together a video, sort of.
It's about 10 minutes long and has a very gritty, edgy feel (read: amateur).

It's kinda like a carnival ride where you have to be a certain height to ride....and no pregnant women! There's definitely some gems but they're below swells of turbulence...bring your dramamine. Some great shots of G-X, Ohm, Slappy and others. I'll tighten it up real nice when I find the time.

Let me throw some music to it and maybe I can have it done by weeks end.

Hey Dave, thanks for the compliment. I really enjoy trying to capture the feel of racing and I like trying to find new angles. My editing however, leaves a lot to be desired. I'd like to travel around filming races and then letting someone else work with the footage.

I did have a heart-thumping moment on Saturday while I was filming with Brian Parson's camera. I'm not sure who he was racing, but at the end they both just barged thru the cones which I can deal with, but then he hit the last MARKER cone (the big square-bottomed one) and sent it right in my path. I just hoped for the best as I couldn't avoid it and couldn't really just bail with Proud Papa's new camera. The Big Red X/ 92 Flywheel combination just swatted it like a bug. Nice.

man i had such a great time on saturday...i never noticed just how close me and anthony smallwood were in both races. It was like .2 in between us for both longboard and hybrid. and that hybrid course was really hard for me in the beginning mainly cuz i only got 3 practices in since i was really content with finishing puttin together my new longboard but it seemed like every second race id dq or hit like 3 cones and i got a little lucky the first few races but its was great fun none the less and next time ill have my bahne ready to race unlike this time were i just was too lazy to wedge the back truck out...great seein everone again!

Yeah, I definitely had a great time at the race. I didn't really get to race much since I got knocket out early in both races. I didn't know I was going fast enough to be in the A class and got beat by Ohm pretty bad. I think him beating me really motivated me to go faster. And then it's kinda hard being competive on a 17" board with a Toys R Us truck and an indy. When I get the money I'll have better equipment.

Thanks for the donuts Seth. Mighty fine!

Had a great time

My hat's off to you guys. Great to see your scene thrive!.....Wish y'all could send some of that stoke down south. We need it. Appears that myself, Tucker, and Hollien are the only ones south of Virginia (sans Mississippi) that don't require a race in order to get off our asses and run cones....Props to you Wesley for making the drives up to DC. When my money and time is right, I'm going to be hitting you up for a ride, hehe.....

David,
Thanks for taking the time post the video clip. I did not realize that your son was so young. I looked at some pictures that you had in those eBay ads. Did he grow or something? He's got great style. I would think that rest of the DC crew will soon be eating dust often as they just get older and he gets stronger. Sorry guys but it looks that way to me.

I added music to my video yesterday with the RHCPeppers, Manu Chao, Sparklehorse and Stevie Wonder making the final cut.
I have a few things to tighten up and I need Slappy's help, so Slappy, call me.

Post by David Morris » Thu Feb 19, 2004 2:00 pm

Hi Glenn,

Yeah although Aaron is 14 he is tall for his age. I stand at 6 feet tall and he is a tad taller than I am. When eye to eye he is looking down at me! He really shot up in height in a years time. Aaron will be 15 March 7th.

Anthony, can't wait to see your video. I would love to have a copy. Let me know how much $$$ or have you given it any thought about selling the video on Ebay? As Slalom videos go I have enjoyed looking at other people's Slalom Videos and their vision of what a Slalom Video should or could be. I enjoyed the West Virginia video from Dave Gales race last fall in west by god Virginny. Mollica's videos are just super. Anthony it sounds like you are laying down some good tracks so I can't wait to see the video.

Post by Anthony Smallwood » Thu Feb 19, 2004 9:16 pm

Hey Dave, I'll kick you a copy, no worries. Aaron makes an appearance or two.
I think if I tried to sell this on ebay I'd get a bunch of negative feedbacks!

This is a very amateur effort that was constructed in about an hour. There's some warts I just didn't want to remove. Definitely plan on giving the subject matter better treatment when there's time. I'm having a new batch of DCDC t-shirts printed this week so I'll burn some copies of the movie and give them out with the purchase of a t-shirt, while supplies last.

The movie btw, is called "dc outlaws---nowhere to hide"

A bit contrived but that's pretty much who they are and the way it is.

Anthony,

that is so cool. Thanks! I will look forward to checking out the video. yeah i have to agree that if someone is going to make a video you need to leave a few moles, scars, and maybe a few broken bones or two. As you may have already figured out I don't deal too well with "perfection". I have an inclination a gravitation towards imperfection, what some may think as ugly I think of as beauty. i like things that are sometimes transported to the edge of destruction. Its all art.

i would like to hear more about the Tee Shirts. Do you have a pic of them???

Will it be the shirt that says DC-DC on them and it's got like a scribbled graphic of someone skating that you can barely make out?

That'd be the one.

The design was inspired by JT Nash, my skating and surfing travel partner and all-around man of the world. JT only knows one way to live, "GO BIG"!!
One nite we took him to Van Dorn and he just charged off into the nite with shorts a t-shirt and that was about it. He'd never been down it and hadn't even bothered to check it out. I was following in the car, trying to provide some light when I noticed JT with the most violent wobbles I'd ever seen. I thought he was just cranking the board, trying to push the envelope. I was saying "not radical enough, huh?", always got to push the limit
.
I quickly realized that he was in trouble. I tried to stay on him to provide light but I didn't want to run him over if he fell off. He was doing a solid 35mph and it would have been ugly if he went down.
JT simply refused to break and pulled it off, as he usually does.
He thrust his arms up in victory when he reached the bottom and refused to ride the rest of the nite. Disaster avoided again.

When we got back home that nite, we were all jacked up and laughing and reliving the moment when I scribbled a quick picture of a guy flailing.
"This is what you looked like"
We all laughed some more, then I forgot about it.
Mike High with his trained, artistic eye noticed the movement and decided to enlarge it. At that moment it became our trademark.

To me, it represents a rider in peril, pulling it off. 'nuff said.

(It also honors 90 years of Futurist Art 1909-1999)

I picked up a DCDC shirt a couple of years ago when our Chapter of Surfrider Foundation (the Washington DC Chapter http://www.surfrider.org/capitol/) helped sponsor the DC Downhill at the DC Zoo with hard cash. I love the drawing on the shirt and it was not till last year at the Dick Dale show that I was introduced to JT Nash. Anthony then told me the story behind the drawing.

JT is one heck of a nice guy and also kind of a big dude to be risking hitting the road at speed. I saw him fall at full speed during last years DC Downhill Race and he walked away form it. JT's leathers and speed helmet saved him from some serious injury.

BTW, the donation to DCDC by Surfrider Foundation that year got us into a booth at Adams Morgan Day that would have cost us four times the amount we paid to sponsor the DC Downhill Race that year.
