NOAA says cloudy on Thursday, 50% chance of T-storms on Friday, 30% chance on Saturday, and partly cloudy on Sunday. Channel 4 news esteemed meteorologist Bob Ryan (most qualified person on DC area TV) predicts light showers Thursday morning, showers Friday evening into the AM hours of Saturday, possible showers early in the morning on Saturday, and clear all day Sunday. I predict that any rain Saturday will dry up quick enough for us to be skating by Noon of that day. After dark, we can ride under the lights at the P&R.

Sorry to intrude onto the organizer’s territory.
There are many garages in the area. It’s not that hard to find a decent covered slalom spot.
Gathering isn’t about racing. It’s about gathering. If worst comes to worst, we can skate under a cover. Risk’s Georgian race was rained out, yet much fun was had on a piece of smooth flat concrete.
The weather looks ok for Sunday, but it’s just a forecast.
Vlad.

I attended 3 events in the rain last year, had an excellent time at each one.
If we don't get out and support our own scene, how can we expect anyone else to?
And I say the following with love, "Don't sign up if you're not gonna show up."
I'll be gathering my gear at baggage claim Friday night around 11:20 pm. See you on the hill!

Watch it, Claude. You start talking about missing an event because of rain and you'll incur the wrath of The South Florida Slalom God from his easy chair on high.
Don't forget, YOU have to attend slalom events no matter what the weather in order to accede to his standard of what makes a supportive slalom racer.

Can I get an opinion on the weather. Sorry but it doesn't look good from up here.
One of the forcasts said it looked to be a duplicate of last weekend.
Can someone give me a head up it's a heck of a long drive if we can't skate much to do the product testing I'm hoping to accomplish.
Thanks Wes but I've been praying anyhow. If this cold doesn't start to clear up by tomorow I won't be able to make it anyhow. No it's not just a simple cold.
Thanks,C.

Now, thats a tough question.
most of the persons that "sponsored" my trip are from the east coast, Mike Maysey its the only Californian guy that gave his grain of sand ( a turner GS/Hybrid !!!!)and Steve from AZ who bought the deck T.K was selling. the others, like Joe & Nick, T.K, Alan Sidlo, Mitch T, even Claude are from the "right" part of the north continent.
and vlad, believe me, by only giving me your pvds, you will stand out above the rest by a really high mark
i want to be there already!!!!!

Don’t drool just yet, Leo. I’ll substitute PeeVees with 139 mm Trackers or 141 mm Indies. You see, I could only afford one pair of PeeVees, as I’m a poor researcher, but rich people here like your sponsor Terence and even richer high-life Hampton E-class Mercedes type John Gilmour have/will have more then one pair of these bad devilish evil trucks. You will try PeeVee set-ups, that’ a promise.
So many people were so nice to you, I think I should be too (or they’ll look down on me, you know, give me that “Roe Racing is everything, and you ain’t nothn’” look?).
We have a problem on the East of all coasts. There are too many nice slalomers here. How does one stand out?
Vlad.

Tway, thanx for the input, i know that G3 starts on saturday, but i was hoping that as there were going to be a lot of riders, we can make a "pre-gathering" race, anyway, i´ll bring some local videos, so if we crash at anybody´s place you can check them out while we party.
about the park, i remember last year the surfrider foundation comp at vans skatepark, i didnt loaded my park board cause i tought i wouldn´t see vert action (like i can get that high on a ramp :lol )now i know i have to take it with me
so my board list its this:
G&S response for the slalom
LY Dan Mitchel for the park and some sliding.
longboard slalom???

Leo, the Friday nite deal has noting to do at all with the G3. We don't want to take anything away from all of Andy's hard work. Tk & I just figured that since there will be a lot of freaks in town that night, why not host a warm-up race...if you will. It may not even happen, if the law shows up early and asks us to bail...we will. This is not our turf so we are going to obey whomever is in charge of the lot. If the deal does happen...bring a short board. If it doesn't...bring a park board as we will head straight to Vans.

Coming to this years "Gaithering" is Alan "Ollie" Gelfand. Yep, the inventor of the "Ollie". Tomorrow 4-30-2003 is his birthday and what better place to celebrate his birthday than at the "Gaithering"! Ollie is turning 40!
I really find it encouraging that many of the skaters who skated during the 60s, 70s, and 80s are coming back to the sport. There is nothing better than seeing some of the over 40 crowd still skating strong!
About the picture above of the funky skateboard. I made that board. I am an artist who mostly paints but now and then I make assemblages and "Ollie Turning 40" was one that I did a couple of years ago. It was a piece about the passing of youth and how we either cannot do or have a hard time doing what we used to do when we were younger. I know this all too well now that I will be 43 this year. I hurt a little more and heal a little slower. I listed that piece on Ebay and it sold. The seller said that he was buying it for a friend who just had to have it but was unable to watch over the auction because he was out of town. So he placed the bids for his friend. He said his friend is Alan Gelfand. He then told me by the way Ollie is 38. All I could say was I was very surprised and happy that Alan would receive this artwork that was named for him.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAN!
Keep on skating!

I think what our friend TK is trying to say is that Sandy won't give him any Beer Money. Would someone PLEASE bring a six pack to the Red Roof Friday so the guy can get at least one buzz on and not waste a whole weekend?
As a friend, Terence, I'm always there to do whatever I can to make your life easier.
P.S. Is JR making the trip with you this year?

Tway, I'm suprised at you. Can you for one second forget about booze. i mean, this is the Gathering for gods sake. Its not a keg party. For me Slalom provides a natural high. I don't need to add chemicals into my body to "dig the scene" . Noah, Joe I, Gareth, Kenny and myself are Elite slalom racers with the Physiques to prove it. Our training requires us to be in bed by 8pm and to drink 8 glasses of water a day. To quote a line from the classic film Animal House "fat ,drunk. and lazy is no way to go through life son" Your friend, TK
PS, PARTY AT THE RED ROOF FRIDAY NITE!!!!

Thanx WesE and GBJ for the info, its almost sure that i will arrive at DCA.
still raising funds to buy the ticket, tough.
JG: haha i remember we talked over the ph 1 year ago and talked abou tyour idea of new cones, and that u came to Venezuela around 1878 i think.
Thanks for the wheels offer, we will need those for the PSS classes cause the 78a that Alan donated are asking for a deserved brake
, of course those will be given for free to the riders so they can practice anywhere or anytime.

Leo, Go to the airport (IAD, DCA, or BWI)that gets you the lowest airfare. Wes, the reason I listed all three airports on T3G information site on Ncdsa.com without expressing any sense of preference, is that they are all almost identically the same travel time (40-45 mins. non-rush hour, 65-75 mins. rush hour)to Gaithersburg, with subtle differences depending on the time of day and the day of the week. (I've been both a chauffeur and a taxi driver in the D.C. area)
If a traveller were planning on using the more affordable public transportation options to get from an airport to Gaithersburg, then DCA is the obvious choice. One can arrive at DCA (Reagan Washington National etc.) and board directly onto the Metro yellow line. Transfer to the Red line at Gallery Place and travel to Shady Grove where you are just a short bus ride from Gaithersburg, most of the hotels being used, my place or The Gathering place itself.

Leo, you might want to email this question to Andy. He probably should put the info that you’re asking on the G3 info site. Sorry, but my answer would probably not be the best. Baltimore-Washington Airport (BWI) might even be the closest for all I know.
Update: If you go to Dulles (IAD) I will give you a ride to Gaithersburg, free of charge.

I wrote this message at Ncdsa, not thinking on taking sides on the "slalom sites conflict", but i have met many of u guys, started my own skate bussines and learn everything i know about Longboards thanks to NCDSA. I love both sites, they are special on what they do, spread the world of the longboarding & slalom scenes worldwide in their own way. for that i thanx both adam's for that.
Here's what I wrote:

as i was writing this, i had another window opened with a great post Adam Trahan wrote at ncdsa. On 4/3/2003 Leo wrote in from 146.18.xxx.xxx:
Hi guys, well i already have the ticket info for traveling to TG3, the ticket from CCS(caracas, Venezuela)-IAD(dulles) cost me 299$ RT, pretty close to the last year ticket from CCS-JFK, the problem is that last year 1$ was 800 bolivars, now its 1600 Bs, my paycheck its 324$ , so i will know if i can go around apr 17th, i have saved some money but i was saving it for buying a car wich i need (urgently), so i am in across orad of important decisions.
travel and walk, or ride and read the posts and see the pics hughr will take.
besides that theres the issue of not available to buy USD in the local "white" market, but in the "black market", where they ascend till 2300 BS!.
i dont want to u guys to feel sorry for me or anything, all i wanted was express my feelings.
this was a great place to do it
Missing a great group of slalomers

Then Terence Kirby wrote a post it almost make my cry, really, i feel blessed, honored, just for having such great friends, that i have only see once in my life, but have experienced with them the thing i love the most after Karla, my g/f, the thing that meks me feel i am alive. On 4/3/2003 Adam Trahan wrote in from 65.161.xxx.xxx:
Leo,
I do feel sorry for you because the racing scene is probably what you imagine it to be, very cool. The neatest thing is that if you actually race, your performance will increase because of the stoke and vibe as well as the excellent courses that are set by the local knowledge.
I wish there was some sort of fund to draw from. Like an organization that had an account that funds were drawn from after operating costs. Some sort of travel expense for country representatives. I know I know, it's a dream but in my dream, you and other racers get to actually make it to these events.
Anyway, good luck, be responsible in your saving and spending and I hope you make it to TG3. Tell GBJ I said "Hello" if you make it.
Best Regards,
Adam Trahan

Dude! This Gee thing might beat all the number-of-races-per-day records!
If the CSC Cup’s the main event (you know, the Cup, the Hall of Fame and stuff), is it going to be on the first day? I know that riding this thing at full throttle sucks a lot of energy out. If one gives 100% on the Cyber Slalom Cup, it might be his only “good” race.

I think GBJ can (should) set a HELL of a scream dual TS on the main hill, a single track GS on the steep hill, the cyber slalom for those who care and then on the flatter curve area (the unused portion) of the loop i think a "beginner" TS course that teaches pumping and feel could be set on that slight pitch....every so often experienced skater/pros could run by give advice and move on....that is 4 courses right there for all levels. Pretty cool.

Andy after cheking some pics of the main hill
i think a dual TS and maybe an hybrid can be run without any problem, or place the starting box after the right curve so the dual lanes are prefectly straight.
http://www.hugh308.com/gathering2/pages/DSC03670.htm
again i am thinking as a newbie, i know i have 1 year of experience, but the gathering its a perfect place and "race" for starters like i was a year ago, also i see that there are a lot of new riders registrered for this year and from my point of view we have to inspire them so they can "get in love" with the sport, not to find it very difficult.
thats why i talked about another course for "begginers" on one of the 2 hills, preferably the main hill while theres a GS race with the pros or the experienced ones.
comments?

A dual race at the main hill will be scary to say the least, if i can rememebr right the road itsn´t wide enough to run a GS course and have a minimum distance between riders, altough the sides of the road are "G.r.a.s.s"
making this a little bit safer.
A TS race would be fast to run at 6'oc or maybe i am thinking with my handicap-skills mind , the Main Hill has a similar % to the hill we use to host our slalom races in VZ only shorter and thiner(main hill), it would be impossible to race a TS from top to bottom so we use to run it from the middle of the hill and its pretty fast, safe and also challenging.(check some pics of the road at my team website)
my idea would be race a 7'oc ts or 6'oc from a few feets above the middle of the hill.
just a tought

I believe you are correct, and I'm looking forward to trying it. With very little room for any offsets, one might be able to pick up a pretty good head of steam, wiggling straight down the Main Hill. I think we can make a dual course fit, although it'll get really sloppy if we start spraying cones around.

Leo, When you say "2 lines races", I presume you are referring to a Dual, head-to-head format. The problem with the whole area is the width of the pavement. The only way we could possibly run a head-to-head format would be as a TS on the Main Hill. As soon as the snow is gone from The Gathering Site, I'll be experimenting to see if I can make it fit. I want to make it work, and imagine that, if I can, it'll make for a pretty fast TS on that hill.
I have to admit, if it came down to running a dual set-up on flat, I probably won't do it. We're already doing a straight line on flat for the Cyber Slalom Cup, and I think it'd be repetitious to do another one, just so we can run side-by-side.
As for a race on the Back Hill, it's a sure thing this year. There will definitely be at least one real race on the Back Hill, if not more.

Claude, There's absolutely no need to apologize. The difference between where it was put and where it would've been best put was so subtle that it is not really even discernable to the eye. The only reason I personally knew the difference was because I've set it there before. Here's a good way to tell just how level (or at least evenly graded) your Cyber Slalom spot is... Look at it after you set the course. Step back or, better yet, get away from it AND get low. Look at the horizontal line of cones and see how level it is.
Like I said earlier, have a look at pictures from last year and you can clearly see where the course breaks from (relatively) level to the sloped section that was the problem.

Sorry Andy we looked for best ashphalted areas more then anything else. I think.
Anyhow I have a question for anyone attending the Gathering from the DC area. If by chance I make it to the G3 and am also able to go to Catalina for the FCR race the following weekend is there anywhere I could park my Van safely.
Also is there anyone else planning to go to Catalina at this point that would like to possibly travel together and share costs and such.
This is all hypothetical at this point just trying to do some eventful planning. Thanks

Good questions, Joe and thanks to Vlad for starting this Topic.
I've had e-mail questions regarding the 2003 Cyber Slalom Cup and have finalized all of the issues with Adam N. of Ncdsa.com, because, after all, it is his race.
I made two mistakes in the running of the 2002 Cyber Slalom Cup, and I will remedy them in the 2003 running of the race.
Re: The uphill/downhill issue
If you look carefully at this video of Curt Kimbel running uphill last year, (http://www.ncdsa.com/G2_Pics/CSC02_Kimbel_uphill.mpg) watch the course, not Curt.
You'll notice that the slope actually begins (or ends in this case) about halfway through the course. Last year the course was misplaced, which is my fault for sending a team to do it with insufficient verbal instructions only. There IS enough level(er) space in the direction of "The Back Hill" to make this issue much less of an issue, and this year I will have the course pre-marked where it belongs.
Re: The Starting Box
Last year I over-interpretted the rules of the true Cyber Slalom Challenge (the online game) and made the 3x3' Starting Box a pre-start restriction for the rider's foot AND all contact points between the board and pavement. We even went so far as to place a speedbump-like backstop on the back of the box to keep people from swinging the board out of the box when lunging to a start. This was a mistake on my part. This will change in the 2003 Cyber Slalom Cup and thereon.
The 3x3' box is only a pre-start restriction for the rider's (down) foot. As long as that foot stays in the box and the board stays behind the Starting Line until the start, crossing the Starting Line only within the marked, 3' width of the front side of the box, it doesn't matter where else the board goes before the start. There will be no backstop, which is just fine with me, 'cuz it's one less thing to do.
Re: Pushing
Once the racer has triggered the starting tape, pushing is unlimited. Push to the first cone... push to the second cone... push AFTER the last cone... ride on one foot and push all the way through the course. It's all good.
Between racing what I believe to be a more level course, and the lowered pre-start restrictions expect much faster times at the 2003 Ncdsa.com Cyber Slalom Cup.

Would someone explain to me the difference between what we did for cyber slalom at G2 and what we'll do at G3 this year?
It's a 3foot box with pushing in the box only, right? How many pushes can you get in 3ft?
Are we going to go uphil with one push?
Joe
