National Skateboard Review

Post by Jack Smith » Sat May 29, 2004 1:51 am

The National Skateboard Review is coming back!

Those of you who remember this publication, know how soulful and cool it was. For those of you who don't remember it, never saw it or weren't born yet...you will soon be able to enjoy the new version. The original NSR was founded and edited by Diana Dootson, it was originally published by "Skatepark Constructors". It was printed on white stock, unbound and sold for twenty five cents. Contest results, how to articles, profiles and area reports were included in each issue.

The new version will follow the same editorial format. We will accept and print contest results, how to articles, profiles and area reports from all the various skateboarding disciplines; slalom, freestyle, downhill, vert and street. Any size contest, from the smallest outlaw race to the biggest World Cup vert contest will have their results printed. All you have to do is submit them. The NSR will be printed in black and white in a tabloid size format.

Why now? While the internet is a wonderful tool and great for instant news and results, I believe that people still like to hold a publication in their hands that features their interests, that they can place into someone else's hands, that they can see their name or photo in, that they can put in their sock drawer and thirty years later pull it out and show their children.

Of course we will accept ads and subscriptions, we're still figuring all the costs out.

Look for the first issue at the Hood River Gorge Games American Cup #2 race.

Please submit your contest results, how-to articles and area reports to:
oldskateguy@aol.com

You can use the same email address for ad and subscription rate information.

Thanks in advance for your support.

National or International?

Post by Jani Soderhall » Tue Jun 29, 2004 6:03 pm

Jack,

Is this as it sounds a "National" publication or do you intend to have any kind of international coverage? Just wondering if you'd accept articles, results and pictures from Europe and elsewhere? Maybe it should just be an occasional one of particular interest? Already being National, especially to with intention to cover all disciplines of skateboarding is already pretty bold.

In France there's already at least 2 free skateboard magazines distributed in shops. Different approach though. They seem very similar to the normal glossy magazines with just interviews and photos, less or no results at all. None of them is interested in slalom, we assume as we haven't tried to approach them so far...

This mag may be a good way to promote slalom skateboarding to the masses as most other skateboarders don't even know that we exist. But maybe some will criticize the review for being too much old school? Cool for all of us, maybe less for "them".

For a while I was thinking that this might be a reason not to go on with Slalom! magazine (and save time, energy and money) but I clearly see the Slalom! and NSR have two different and complementary goals.

Wishing you best of luck!

I'm very much looking forward to get the first issue. I'll sign up for a subscription not to miss out.

/Jani

Hi Jack,
Any idea of publication date yet or how someone in Europe will be able to get hold of a copy?
And Jani, do you know when issue 25 of "Slalom!" comes out?
Thanks...
