Hey Slappy,
Most of the cars back in the day used the same kind of chutes as drag racers use. I think mine was made by Simpson.
Being the showboat I am I would put a bunch of talcum powder in my chute when I packed it. When it opened it looked like a big puff of smoke coming out of the back of my car.
The chute was activated by pulling on a cable that was attached to my hand grips.
I will try and post some pics of a homemade skatecar I built before the Vetter Streamliner. Construction cost of the Streamline was between 5 and 6K.

How about chutes?? I make small to medium sized parachutes for model rockets, so I figure I can make my own.
