Seattle Slalom We had a great time on Sunday (2/9/03) despite the threat of rain and near-freezing temperatures. Enthusiasim was running high and a lot of people here in the northwest are eager to race. We will keep this going every Sunday as it seems that there is genuine interest - especially from the new, non-slalom crowd! It was great to see some new faces amongst the crowd. Dave Mitchell travelled up from Portland just to ride with us! Thanks for coming up. A bunch of us will be heading to Portland here in a couple of weeks to ride with the Portland group.

We had a 45 cone hybrid course that utilized the entire hill. Nothing too radical, challenging if you were charging, but certainly makeable for the first timers!

When the dust settled (and the rain began), here is how the racers stacked up!
1. Michael Dong - 18.941
2. Dan Hughes - 19.612
3. Gareth Roe - 19.953
4. Corey Moy - 20.877
5. John Stryker - 21.115
6. Chris Raezer - 21.423
7. Dave Mitchell - 24.709
8. Darren Moy - 24.772
9. John Carr - 25.622
10. Dave F. - 28.690
11. Ian Roe - 30.826

Thanks guys - It was good to be racing again! See you all next weekend.

Seattle Slalom (2/9/03)
Here are a couple of photos that Dan Hughes took last Sunday. Thanks Dan for bringing your camera!

When Dan is not taking photos – he flies down the course! He is a marked man! It won’t be too long until my times are faster than his!

Chris Raezer (on the right) has improved 200% since the first time we skated together a little over a year ago. This guy rips!!!!!

John Carr (on the left) comes to Seattle by way of Albuquerque! He is another skater who has improved significantly and is a blast to ride with. John always shows up with some very unique skateboards. Last weekend he brought a LLOONNNNNGGGGGG board that could double as a dining room table, it was about 60" long and at least 12 inches wide! Cool stuff!

Come to think of it, Dave Mitchell from the Portland area - the other rider in both of the pictures above - has also improved significantly since we first skated together last October. All that practice is paying off. I am sure his new board helps as well.

These great photos come from Dan Hughes' web site. Check out Dan's Skating Pages. Dan has compiled a ton of great photos. Some dating all the way back to the 70's!

See you all on Sunday!
Gareth

Thanks Gareth and Mike for doing the hard work on this whole deal. I tried to get some vert skaters out there, and Mark showed up, everyone else bailed.

Oh, and you can see John Carr's huge board in the group photo. He's standing next to it!

We had a session in Portland on 2/8/2003, six racers showed up. The hill we used was in good shape and we all had a good time. This was some of the best weather ever in Portland for February. Usually even if it is not raining, the humidity is so high that the streets don't dry out, so this was a real treat to have bone-dry pavement in February.

Looks like we're back into the rain for this coming weekend....

Pat-
In the next couple of weeks, weather permitting, a group of us from Seattle will be heading down to the Portland area to ride with you guys. I can't wait to set a course at the WSU campus.

Steven King, Portland native - now living in the Bay Area, will be coming up in the near future and we may coordinate our trip south with his visit to Portland.

As always, you guys are certainly welcome to come and ride with us. It was great having Dave Mitchell join us!

Keep in touch- Gareth

We (Portland group) will be riding this weekend 2/22/03 at WSU. 10:00am on Saturday, 1pm on Sunday.

Make your own judgement about the dryness of the asphalt (I have my doubts about Sat AM).

Howdy-
Looks like the weather is going to cooperate for us tomorrow, so... lets set up at the cones at North Seattle Community College. Practice begins at 12:00 with the racing to start at 1:00. Fastest time of the day goes home with a set of Pleasure Tool ABEC7’s! (don’t worry, Michael D. won’t be there so everyone has a chance at winning!).

I will also have a new RoeRacing proto-type set up for everyone to ride (we need feedback!!!). We are looking to get the 2003 line-up dialed in and production up and running at full speed in time for the race season to start. Those of you (5) who have ordered boards and are waiting – be patient! The wait will be worth it – I promise!!!!!!

Also - as a reminder, the Seattle Contingent will be heading south next weekend to ride at the WSU campus in Vancouver, Washington. We should plan on being on the hill by noon. This means leaving the Seattle area around 9:00am. We can coordinate driving and set up some carpools over the next week.

If you want to go skate at this beautiful venue near Portland with us, but aren’t going to be at NSCC tomorrow, let me know so I can keep you informed of our plans. I can be reached at either info@roeslalom.com or garethr@attbi.com.

See you all tomorrow!
Gareth

Another Beautiful Sunday in Seattle
The day started early, and depsite the temptation to head to the mountains to enjoy the best snowboarding of the season, I found myself loading the car with all the slalom gear for ANOTHER great day of winter racing here in Seattle!

Again, there were several new faces and some guys we hadn't seen on the hill since last fall. Michael Dong gave us all a break and decided to do some two wheel training instead of running cones today. Besides, his Flashbacks are still cooling down from Friday nights Cyberslalom session!!!

After spending some time riding the new RoeRacing proto-types and listening to Dan Hughes' plans for making the Ballard Bowl skateable 360 days out of the year (its outdoors, this is Seattle!) we got down to the racing.

At the end of the day, here is where the chips fell;
1). Gareth Roe - 20.915
2). Dan Hughes - 20.939
3). Corey Moy - 21.030
4). John Stryker - 22.027
5). Chris Raezer - 22.397
6). Dennis - 22.727
7). Darren Moy - 25.406
8). Ben V. - 27.044
9). Dan Farmery - 27.119
10). John S. Jr. - 30.746

Just a reminder, next weekend the racing will head south to the Portland area to ride with the group of guys from down that way. I am looking forward to riding the hill at the Washington State University Campus in Vancouver, WA.

Thanks for the great turnout! It was great to see some old friends and some new faces. If anyone needs a ride or directions for next weekends races, please feel free to contact me at info@roeslalom.com or garethr@attbi.com .

See you all next weekend!
