[2011] South Carolina Outlaw, (RESCHEDULED) February 12

Post by Wesley Tucker » Sun Jan 30, 2011 11:37 pm

Anyone wanna race?

Weekend Outlaw, Saturday, February 12, 2011 11:00 AM until we get tired and quit.

Location: Walter Brown Industrial Park, Commerce Drive, Ridgeway, South Carolina at Exit 32 on I-77 (25 miles north of Columbia.)

Directions: Take I-77 to Exit 32 at mile marker 32. Take Peach Road west. Take the first right. Take the next right on to Commerce Drive. Go to end of road at the cul de sac.

Image

Venue: dead end road in a vacant industrial park. Three-year old asphalt with little or no traffic. Probably a good 8.6-9 out of 10. Can't say 10 because it's only 300 feet long and only 18 feet wide. 5-6% Grade.

Here's a video from an outlaw back in '08. The course will be on the same hill as the tight slalom course at the 1:12 minute mark:

Course: will set a good tight-to-hybrid course with around 40 cones. Offsets won't be too extreme but it will be be fast. The surface and pitch will see to it.

Start: push start. Ain't gonna sweat over getting ramps to an outlaw. But even the push start will be downhill to the first cone.

Timing: Dual-lane TrakMate timing with four-tone starts.

Format: Qualifying, bracketing and dual eliminations.

Weather: long range forecast has it clear and in the 50s. If there is more than a 50% of rain on Thursday then we'll cancel. Otherwise, it's a go.

No sign up but let me know with a reply here or on Facebook. Be nice to get at least 10 to race.

One last thing: it's an OUTLAW. Don't get in a twist about it. No one has raced or run cones probably since the Dixie Cup if not longer. Come out Saturday, skate, work out the kinks, compete, burn off some calories.

Ain't life grand?

The five-day forecast has it warmer (upper '50s) . . . and a 40% chance of rain.

Keep an eye on it. I'll call it Thursday.

And don't hesitate to speak up and suggest a delay. February 12 is just as good a Saturday as the 5th.

This is the last update before Saturday's racing.

Weather is looking great. Literally a ZERO PERCENT chance of rain and an expected high of 59.

We had a weather scare here in Columbia today but it was just a tempest in a teapot. All kinds of crying and hysterics over the possibility of snow. Got up this morning and the sun was shining and the roads were already starting to dry. Not a bit of ice.

I will go to the site tomorrow and set the course and get it chalked in so that won't have to be done Saturday morning.

Other than that, everything is cool (well, you know, in the upper '30s) and Saturday should be a PERFECT winter's day for skateboard slalom racing.

Got out the TrakMate and did a thorough test. Everything is fabulous, simply fabulous. Curiously, the last time I used it was the Outlaw we had in the same spot in October of '09. That's just too long to go between setting a course and getting a time.

OK. I said yesterday "last update."

Well, I lied.

Got up there today and set the course.

Here's a pic looking down the course:

And two looking up the course:

How hard is the course? Well, I bailed the first time through, the second time through hit 5 of 34 cones. Third time hit three. After that I quit. Didn't want to practice up a day in advance of anyone else.

This will be a .1 second cone penalty, five OK, six DQ. That's a little high for 34 cones but I figure everyone is a bit rusty. We'll find out.

See whoever appears tomorrow!!!

Tom,

That spot is lost. The developer of the business park came in and built a road off the cul-de-sac at the top of the hill. It allows through traffic to the back of a building next to the spot. So there probably won't be another race here until maybe that business (whatever it is) goes out of business. It's happened before. I'll just keep an eye on it.
