[2011] Antrim Can/Am International - September 16-17-18

Post by Dave Kirkpatrick » Fri Jan 28, 2011 10:52 pm

Greetings Skaters,

The Can/Am International is officially ON once again! Antrim's Home and Harvest Festival is Saturday, 9/17 which makes our race dates September 16-18. I'm still gathering info and weighing options, but more than likely we'll stick to something like what's worked in the past - qualifying and some kind of racing on Friday, main event head-to-head on Saturday, and a GS Sunday.

Lots of stuff still up in the air right now, including making this event bigger, adding a DH component, and/or taking our GS off Summer Street this year. I'll post more info as things become more clear.

As the new race coordinator, I'm interested in your input on anything that pertains to the racing or the logistics, either in the past or whatever is on your wish list for future events.

I'm also looking for new volunteers and sponsors, so if you have time or a skill to offer, or know of an industry connection that could be made, drop me a note.

I look forward to getting started on this, and seeing all of you again!

Thanks for leading the charge Dave. I can't wait to hang w/ the good people of Antrim and race again. Great way to spend a fall weekend in New England!

We're looking for at least a MAIN status for this race, HOWEVER - there's been some serious talk and consideration about putting in a bid for the Worlds - alternately, US Nationals. We're currently talking with town committees and our friends in the slalom community to get a clear picture of the drive and support for such an event. May add a day Thurs 9/15 if the event grows.

Remarks: if you have some - Antrim has a built in audience, enjoys local government support and the PR that goes with our Home and Harvest festival, fireworks, easy access from Logan, NYC, etc. Possible local TV coverage, 4 camera live switching for head-to-head racing. Lots of discussion still to have about the nature/possibilities of this year's event.

Maharishi is good to go this year. It's still for sale, but pretty sure we're locked in, unless someone shows up, literally, with a bag of cash. Big deals take time and our economy is still in the crapper. Yay for that! The group that bumped us last year is NOT on for our race weekend, so no worries there.

I'll get details up as I get them. Pretty sure it's like the deal we had before. They may handle check ins, which would not be a bad thing for me.

I'll keep you posted!

Hey Skaters -

The Can Am is ON of course, and reg is still open, I apologize for not updating here sooner. I'm hoping to put signup on NCDSA today, but you can contact me to register as well.

We're pretty much sticking to the same format - qualifiers Friday AM, TS Friday PM when we get to it, some sort of fun skate Friday PM. Saturday last minute qualifiers, then head to head. Sunday GS and kids, and I really hope to squeeze in a couple extra "sideshow skates" throughout the weekend. Flat slalom, glow-cones, flat drag race (I can't wait to see you manly men PUMP in your shiny red stilettos), relay race, uphill challenge... we'll see what shakes out.

Maharishi is a GO for lodging, I'll put you in touch with them directly this time around. If you want info on campgrounds, hotel/motel or "lawn camping" send me a note.

Meal tickets available again like last year, optional and recommended, and cheaper in advance. Extra tees will help the slalom event (it would be great to break even this year) and will be an option at online reg or let me know.

Please let me know how I can assist. I'll be "out of the office" through Monday, but checking in here, email and cell 603 four slx four 9631 if you need me.

Looking forward to skating with you!

Skaters,

Sorry for the wait -

You can sign up for the Antrim Can Am Slalom Skateboard Championships on NCDSA: http://www.ncdsa.com/contest_registrati ... 521#signup

You aren't fully confirmed until you make payment through Active: http://www.active.com/page/Event_Detail ... 6beffc131d

...OR make other arrangements with me. Town of Antrim can take CC or checks, cash... but please get on the NCDSA list so we can count you and extra shirts, etc. Contrary to above post , I DID include meals in the race fee. It's easier and helps the wheels here in town turn, but If it presents a problem let me know.

Beginner race is free, of course, and there will be extra-credit races to be had each day, if all goes as planned.

Housing at the Maharishi is good to go, $25 pp/per night, I'll post their contact info ASAP, they will not sell out. If you need other housing or camping info, let me know.

Let me know of any signup issues, they both seemed to work fine in MY sandbox.

Game on!

We normally close the road right after school buses, around 9AM - I'm going to look into making that earlier. I'd hope to have practice runs by 9:30, qualifiers start at 11:30, TS starting around 2.

Some can qualify Sat AM if necessary, that will probably be verty early with short or no practice - we'll see how dry it is.

I'm going to try to jam a lot in, but we'll of course have flex with the conditions and whatever best serves the event, and the most.

Though Dave's the big boss now, Brian is still hosting the chili feast for Thursday night Sept. 15 for the skaters. Corn bread, meat chili, veggie chili, BYOB. Stop by and catch up with everybody. If you don't remember the way to the Maha Hilton, we'll give you directions and/or an escort.

Sorry, I realize there's a Can Am 2011 Thread in two places, here and New England : http://www.slalomskateboarder.com/phpBB ... 134&t=7786

I wonder if a mod could merge them to the better location for us, please and thanks?

Racers,

I thought I had successfully ditched this job, but Maharishi has asked that I (we) get people registered, they will handle check ins. If you are planning on staying there, please check in with me if you haven't yet. Remember to bring sheets and stuff for your luxurious adventure, and that no smoking or alcohol is permitted there. (don't let them find any evidence this year)

It appears Active.com does let you put Maha nights in the cart, why did I think it wouldn't?

See you all soon!

Skaters,

A few things about the Race, not sure if everyone got all of this yet so sending out to all lists, sorry if a repeat:

Rides Requests

Someone needed a ride from Manchester airport Thursday, another? was looking for a ride to Hartford CT Airport on Monday morning. If anyone is going to or near and can help out please let me know ASAP. Manchester I can probably have a local handle if someone else can't, Hartford will be trickier.

Late Sponsors

If you are bringing stuff or still want to Priority Mail gear and your banner, let me know what to expect. Not too late for banners, weblinks, and TV in exchange for your hundred bucks O' schwag!

Signup and Maharishi

It would be extremely helpful to get everyone on the NCDSA.com list for a head count. If you haven't signed up please do. If you want the Maharishi and didn't note it on the signup, please let me know!

TV Coverage - Announcers - Sponsors

Racers - Cheshire TV will be be providing coverage for Saturday's event. This will be live switched to DVD for broadcast and sharing, and the footage will be available for me (us) to use after the fact too. This should be very slick coverage! THe ONE thing they really want, that will make or break this for their purposes, is some knowledgeable commentators who can talk to the people in TV land, someone who can tell the un-initiated what's going on, who is who, what gear they are riding... They want Regis... possibly Howard Stern or Ozzie's wife... well, you don't need to be that slick! This will be different from the race announcer. Fatboy is IN for this, but I think we'll want to change up every so often, different pairs or different "guests". We'll concentrate on getting this covered for the A bracket, but nice if we have the help to cover the whole day.

So expect to be grabbed, if you're willing and able, after your run or when the other brackets are running to chat for a bit. They want to fill the space between runs with something a TV audience will understand. If you bring crib notes about history, titles, and trivia, you're awesome!

Sponsors, this is an opportunity for you to show and talk about your gear. If you'll sit in the hot seat for a half hour? hour?, you'll get pretty good coverage out of this - just sit, comment on the racers and runs, talk about the sport, show and talk about your gear, fly your banner!
If you reply to say OK, that lightens my mental load, otherwise I'm scrounging on the hill. Good running commentary is what CTV would base coming back next year on

Thanks all, lots of replies to the email version already!!

As of 7:30 AM Monday, the weather report looks good for the weekend. Partly cloudy, dry, but COOL. Highs Fri - Sat - Sun in the mid to upper 60s. Make sure to bring appropriate clothing! I will update the weather again on Wednesday when we're a little closer.

Thanks for the weather update Brian,

I have 10 signed up for the Maharishi. Everyone is a single except one. I expect to have 20 people there? They think 20 singles might be possible, more might be tough. If you're sharing (sharing might be fun!) or if you haven't checked in with me, please let me know.

Answers to questions: Pillows are provided, blankets are available at check in if you want one. If you want them to provide sheets, $5 covers your entire stay, not by the day.

Reminder about no alcohol, no smoking, and stay in your assigned rooms, please and thank you!

Dave,

As this is one of the most important North American events this year, we'd like to assure rapid publication of the results. Could you make sure someone emails results to JBH (jbh123 AT gmail.com) and myself (jani AT slalomskateboarder.com).

If you have just one picture to go along with the article that would be ideal too.

Thanks!

Did a lot of moving "stuff" today...

The cops stopped by, had fixed the speed trailer themselves to set it up for our race, and offered to sponsor a couple kids again. Great to have local support.

Had a nice chat with the ONE angry local guy (who filled my ear full of obscenities over the phone 2 weeks ago) and we're OK. He doesn't love us dearly. He's leaving for a couple days, we shook hands and brought it all back down... his granddaughter? is going to skate in my REC program :-) Ha. ALL the other neighbors love us, we'll have to cling to that.

Volunteers and long lost friends are showing up, and I really can't wait to see all of you Can / Am veteran skaters again!

I think we're ready to go.

I might not reply in complete sentences any time soon, but will be sending updates daily.

Let's race!

Joe McClaren sets 100-Cone Tight Slalom Clean Record at 20.6

Post by Brian Beihl » Sat Sep 17, 2011 1:40 am

For Immediate Release
For More Information, contact Brian Beihl, Antrim Home & Harvest Festival, 603-620-8300

ANTRIM, NH--A new world record in the sport of slalom skateboard was set Friday afternoon by Joe McLaren of Longmont, Colorado. His slalom skateboard run on Summer Street in Antrim was 20.687 seconds without displacing any cones in the 100-cone tight slalom competition. His record beats the recent record of 20.77 set by Janis Kuzmins in Latvia on September 12, 2010. Friday's event was part of the weekend-long Antrim Can/Am Slalom Championships.

McLaren, 18, has not raced in Antrim before, but recently was named overall world champion at the International Skateboard Slalom Association World Championships held in Ottawa, Ontario last month, and in the Czech Republic in 2010. McLaren attends Front Range Community College in Longmont, and has been skateboarding for 12 years.

"I knew I had the time, but I just had to stay clean and not knock down any cones," said McLaren. The 100-cone tight slalom is mind-numbing, because cones come at the racer so quickly over the over 600-foot course.

Another world record was set in the 100-cone tight slalom in 2008 by veteran skater Richie Carasco. Carasco's record fell to Kuzmins in 2010, but Richie was present to see McLaren's record set Friday.

McLaren and some of the best skaters in the world will be competing Saturday in the hybrid slalom and Sunday in the giant slalom at the competition, part of the Antrim Home & Harvest Festival.

I'd like to point out all of our low starters on Saturday moved right up to the top of the hill for the GS on Sunday!! Most even started off the ramp! My 11yo Bailey, on Lynn and MB's sound advice and encouragement, crippled her bearings and headed for the top of Summer Street too! After we both got lost in the shuffle and raced the whole day away, when I got home she was absolutely glowing! And her question to me was - "Dad, what can we do to make this board faster?" Next time, kiddo!

I’m a proud dad, and very proud of my crew. Extra thanks to Glenn, Dan, Rick and the others who joined the Sunday Skate regularly, set us up with gear and coaching, and got us to this milestone.

none so far. a couple of people were asking about images to use on Facebook etc. so I've added some digital download options. if you hit the buy button you can get a download there.

Enjoy!

First chance to post since last weekend - had a great time - as always!

Thanks to Dave, Brian and Harry for all your hard work and the Town of Antrim for supporting the event! Thanks also to Glenn, Mig & the Full Bag Crew and Dr. Dan for also helping out.

Is that Chesire TV footage on the air yet locally?

Great to see everybody,
Terry

Thank you Dave, Brian, Harry, Mig, MB and the town of Antrim for another great race weekend! Looking forward to returning next year already. I may even train between now and then :). Hope to have some new young racers for the kids race with me. Share the fun and pass it on.

Thanks Maria, great clip! I'm very glad you were there shooting. I haven't seen CTV's stuff yet, but that's all Saturday. I shot none of my own this year (thanks to Brian and Oliver for taking my camera for a walk, that was fun to go through after).
