Foam and Ply Questions

I have been wanting to build a few boards for a while, but solid woods and cheap plywood isnt what i want, so my question is about other materials. First there is foam, what kind of foam can i use and where can i get it if at all possible? I saw another thread here where the guy said he searched surf forums, but i found nothing. Also if i can mix my own foam, how would i shape it? My next question is about plys, seperate plys. Is it possible to buy wood in one ply? Where do the companies get them from, and what is an ideal thickness, since im sure i would need to send it through the planer? I think i could figure everything else out by myself, but if you have any more insight i would love to hear it. Thanks.
