2008 ISSA World Record Weekend -- discussion

Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2008 6:48 am
by Pat Chewning
I would like to propose that we (the ISSA) sponsor a WORLD RECORDS weekend.

Something like this:
We establish a PRIME sanction for the WORLD RECORD weekend.
Contest organizers can run any (or all) of the 3 courses (25-cone, 50-cone, 100-cone) on that weekend.
Contests will be run all over the world.
We gather the results and congratulate the new WORLD RECORD holders (there will be some).
The ISSA solicits prizes from sponsors and we get those prizes to the people.

Maybe a sponsor will give cash or merchandise or gift certificate.
It would be acceptable if a sponsor were to give a special prize if a WORLD RECORD were to be set using that sponsor's equipment.

The ISSA publishes framed certificates of World Record for the winners.
I will be happy to take the lead for this, but am seeking guidance, comments, volunteers.

Comments are welcome.

Contest sanction established for WORLD RECORD Weekend.

September 6-7

The idea is to get local race organizers to add their venue to the sanction already established for this weekend.

RACE ORGANIZERS: Please consider adding a local venue for World Record attempts on this weekend. Please read this contest sanction and the WORLD RECORD rules. You are required to do special documentation and measurements to validate the results. If you then decide you want to join in, then post a message here.

It probably won't be any audience, but we'll run some very fast runs. I think we have good venues for all three races.

Ok, so just to make everything crystal clear for schmucks like me.
All you need to do is say "yes I'd like to run a race" on this thread.
Run the race and 'document it' in a proper way (i.e timer and video/photo) and you are good (do you need to have video of the actual fastest run, or just any run to show the course).

And the records to beat are:
25 cones
Men - 8.11
Women - N/A
Jr - N/A
Master - N/A

50 cones
Men - 12.5something
Women - N/A
Jr - N/A
Master - N/A

100 cones
Men - 20.56
Women - 23.55
Jr - 33.98
Master - N/A

Masters = if you are 45yrs or older on the day of the race?
Junior = if you have not yet turned 16 on the day of the race?
Women = if you not yet have become male at the day of the race?

We will have qualifications so that only the ones that are able to beat a record will be allowed to race (actually so that we can skip the cyber).

Please help me fill in the blanks. Thank you!

Getting better...but getting older.

Hopefully I won't be in the midst of emigrating and will be able to 'have a go' at an 'official' venue somewhere...maybe we should run one in the UK with Louis, Paul Price, Sam and co.,Hyde Park could work really well.We have Ella and jack too who could potentially record World record times at Women/Junior level too.

1) yes, notify here (and i suggest in contest calendar too) -- all events will share the same sanction (PRIME)

2) documentation: photos, measurements (video not required) see here:

3) records to beat: http://www.slalomskateboarder.com/ISSA/ ... ecords.pdf
PLUS -- jack smith will be submitting some 50-cone records from the US Nationals

4) masters age 45+ on day of race ; Jr age is 17 or less in calendar year of race

World Record Attempt in Santa Cruz and San Jose September 7,

I am planning to run 3 races on September 7, 2008 Sunday

The first race will be the 100 in San Jose on Bernal in the am if the wind, weather, and if we have a small crowd. If we have to many I do not want to jeopardize our only good hill.

I plan is, we would start at 7:00 am and get off the hill in San Jose by 11:00 am latest.

We will run the 25 and 50 on the Santa Cruz Levee which is flat and it is easy to run the course both ways and get a time.

Drive to Santa Cruz and skate starting at 1:00 and do the 25 cone race 2 runs each and get times and then the 50 2 runs each and get a time.

Any questions please contact me.

slalomrankings@sbcglobal.net

I wanted to do it local so we could save time and money instead of traveling South or North.

I will go by the rules. John Ravitch is going to help.

Thanks,

Two venues in the UK?

Posted: Fri Aug 22, 2008 1:31 pm
by Martin Drayton
Hi Pat,

In an effort to keep travelling costs down AND get maximum people to get a shot at a record we look like we will be having two venues in the UK. We have a great talent pool of fast racers and record breakers or not, everyone is out to have a good time.
Unfortunately due to our lack of a good 100 cone venue the attempts will be 25 and 50 cone only.
There is a slim chance that a 100 cone attempt will take place at Finsbury Park, but we will keep you posted.
So it will be:

SUNDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2008.

Hyde Park, London-25 and 50 cone record attempts.

Hove Lawns, Brighton-25 and 50 cone record attempts.

NCDSA sign-up is here:

thanks

MARTIN.

We intend to do all three events but will have pretty hard qualifications in order to avoid picking up cones all day. Unfortunately its been raining every day for the last 2 weeks so this far no one have qualified :-)

For the same reason I haven't been to the hill to document it in a proper way. However we will run 25 and 50 on one street (most likely only 50 since no one in sweden is close to Michael Dongs record)

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=59.2 ... 3&t=h&z=18

The 100 will be run on another street (or actually bike path/sidewalk). We will run the 100 cones at 170cm center center. I feel pretty confident that we will break Lucas record, question is if someone will be even faster somewhere else?

http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=59.2 ... 3&t=h&z=18

Finally since the weather has sucked badly the last couple of weeks I gotta ask this; if it rains on the raceday can we postpone the race and run it the first available sunny day (i.e june 17:th 2034)?

And what arrived in the email today?:
Guinness World Records Smashed is a new one-hour TV special from Outline Productions and SKY1. It's taping before a live audience on the 2nd and 3rd October, for screening early December on Sky1, and THEY WANT YOU!

If you have ideas for record-breaking attempts that you want to attempt before a wildly enthusiastic audience, or would be willing to film for screening throughout the special, shoot an email through to smashed@outlineproductions.co.uk and let them know your ideas.

Measurements are from center to center of cones, never to the edge of the cone.

Cone sizes are outlined in the slalom skateboarding rules....

We haven't run any qualifications--hell, we haven't run sh!t--but that won't stop us!

Details:
  • 100 cones

    Alton, Illinois

Piasa Bird (not much of a) Hill--on the Great River Road, about 1 mile north/west of the Alton Belle casino

Saturday or Sunday, Sept. 6 or 7--whichever day we can drag more people out of their summer stupor and into the jungle-like humidity and heat.

We will break the world record*, guaranteed.

I know this is a little bit late and perhaps not the right thead, but I really don't see a reason for records having to be 0.05 seconds better. Is is 0.01 second better then its a new record I think. This is not high jump where you could beat the record with as little as possible lots of times. Anybody agree?

I agree. Five hundredths of a second is not insignificant, even over a 20-second race. Swimming, track & field (from the 100 meters to the marathon), drag racing (?)--if it beats the existing record, it's a new record. Why should slalom be any different?

Surprise, surprise the weather in the UK is looking questionable for the Record attempt to say the least! Very Heavy rain is forecast and it has rained consistantly for the last week causing flooding in some parts of the country.
Pat, If we cannot run the event at either venue (London & South Coast), can we postpone it and still keep our status? Or is it this weekend or bust?

On the subject of improvement of times:

I think Michael Dong is on record as saying it can take weeks to knock 0.01 off a Cyber time and a lot of effort. If you go faster, its an improvement no matter how small the increment! Surely?

Martin.

Hardly enough time considering there is a big race in Grenoble next weekend and the IGSA downhill event at Eastbourne, where some participants of the world record attempts will/may want to be.

And the London venue has been violated by barriers for a running race making that venue probably unusable too. Even if dry.

Two weeks?.....

14 days?

Ok all right, twist my arm. A fortnight?

100 cones

no record in göteborg. my fast time was 19.25 plus eight cones followed by Wadston,19.41 plus eight, then Mika with 20.62 plus 4 cones. no clean runs, but Mika had a smokin' fast run with only one but no time recorded. fastest raw 19.18 plus 14.

ALL THREE EXCUSES APPLY!

Maybe next time

Stockholm report

Posted: Sun Sep 07, 2008 9:48 pm
by Marcus Seyffarth
Pappasino - my math says that 19.25+0.8 = 20.05 and that is a record by 0.49 seconds from the 20.56 that Luca has. So I'd say you have a world record right there...

In stockholm we had rain all day yesterday, and all night as well. At 11.30 sunday it started to dry on our backup locatation in Täby. Just before the course was all dry Antonio cruised through it, slid out and faceplanted right on the curb. I wasn't at the venue when it happened but when I got there 10 minutes later he was on a stretcher getting oxygen with blood all over. Not what you want to see when you get to a race...

The ambulance got him to the hospital and they did all kinds of scans on him and it seems he is ok, however he have a major concusion and will stay the night from what I've heard.

Get well Antonio!

When Johan and Fabian got back to the venue from the hospital we decided to do some runs just for the sake of it but none was really in the mood. However we improved the 50 cones record six times. This is the order in which we improved the record.

Marcus Seyffarth 12.05
Hans Göthberg 11.66
Marcus Seyffarth 10.54
Hans Göthberg 10.29
Marcus Seyffarth 10.13
Marcus Seyffarth 9.93

Fabian Björnstjerna set a new record for masters in the 50 cones as well at 10.06

These are the fastest runs per racer:
Marcus 9.93
Fabian 10.06
Götis 10.20
Johan 10.77

Since we got rained out on saturday, we will try to do the 100 this week.

Paul Graf and I tried 100 cones yesterday and today in Alton, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis. Jeff Goad rode with us yesterday. Mellow hill with decent pavement (8 out of 10). Yesterday was about 5' 9" spacing measured by footsteps, today was exactly 6' on center, lined up along a measuring tape.

Goad's been skating but hasn't ridden slalom in months. Still, he made the only clean run on Saturday, a fairly careful 30.211. Later he turned up the speed but got a little dirtier. Paul tried to run slow but clean, but after about 50 cones the "slow" part couldn't be maintained, so he ended with a 33.284 (33.084 plus two cones). He also went balls-out later--fastest raw time was 28.281 with a few cones (exact number not recorded). I had a devil of a time with the 5'9" spacing, with many a spectacular blowout. Best raw time was 20.742, with 7 cones.

Today's 6' spacing was much easier, but because of the longer course, my times were slower. (Paul took a few runs but was mainly spectating.) I had one clean run, on which--naturally--the timer wasn't reset. Two runs later I had a one-coner, which ended up being my best time overall.

Best times:

Goad: 26.617 raw plus 7 cones = 27.317
Graf: 25.191 raw plus 8 cones = 25.991
JBH: 21.155 plus 1 cone = 21.255

I made many good runs up to about 80 or 90 cones, but toward the end (especially yesterday) it became VERY difficult to maintain my mental focus. I simply could...not...make...myself...look...ahead...and the cones just came too fast. As others have mentioned in the past, somewhere around 70 or 80 cones it seems to become almost more of a mental thing than a physical one. I enjoyed the challenge tremendously, though, and learned a lot.

Mainly, I learned that I'm no Luca (or Ramon, or Janis, or Dominik, or Pappasino, etc., etc., etc.). My hat is off--or perhaps I should say my helmet is off--to all those truly fast guys. I'm really amazed at their mental AND physical abilities. I may not be quite as fast as they are, but I'm honored to be able to race against them, and to use them as examples to push myself to my own personal best.

P.S.
