Not that I am one to talk trash about anyone or anything (at least not yet) but I do have some strong feelings about certain things slalom-related. One is raw times.

Boasting about raw time is like saying you can hit a 120 MPH serve in tennis, but can't get it in the box.

Raw time is only good for determining what you WISH you could do if you had the skills to make the course with any reasonable degree of competency.

Raw time is great for practicing by yourself, but carries no weight in a competition.

In the end, raw time don't mean squat.

Slalom is simple: The fastest time with the fewest number of cones down.

I tried Jim Seiner's board and shaved nearly 3 seconds off my time (roughly). That means that I smoked Joe I's a** Henry J's a**, and Jim Siener's a**...maybe even a couple of other folks' a**es. But I will not allow myself to be disillusioned. I smoked nobody's a** because I knocked down 14 cones along the way.

NOBODY should ever come out saying that beat so and so when in truth, in never really happened.

note: this post was not directed at any individual. It was only meant to put wood on some random fires already burning. Thanks for listening.
slalom is good

Henry,
At least Joe posted a qualifying time for the TS. If I recall you DQ'ed both runs. If you could of managed not hitting more than NINE cones you would of smoked him and probably me too but i guess it was too hard of a course for you. Then again maybe your racing strategy is more just about plowing for a RAW time instead of slaloming.

Oh yeah, and posting a time for the GS was easy, as JG says it was a beginner slalom course.

Joe, it was a pleasure smoking your ass by 8 tenths on Friday! Let's do it again sometime.

I have to point something out on the summer ski website... if you go to their history page, the guy with the camera and striped shirt is none other than Rick Howell, founder of ICK STICKS, and on the links page the guy sitting on the hood of the car (we think) is Charlie Ransom, OG ICKer and Bandlands legend!

Way to go summer ski!

And you just never know.... I got off the phone with my father in law, he knows I have a habit called slalom and even watched Mollica's videos (L/C & Worlds) However, he was in Paris at the Trocdero and watched you guys and now seems pretty stoked. Slalom has to be seen in person. Regardless T/S-G/S the perspective seen live blew him away. he described at as one of the better atheletic events he watched. He was easily able to identify John, "looked like he was dancing, really fast and there were a lot of chicks..."

How bizarre for me to tell him I knew several of you? I am trying to get him to go to Morro Bay.

John, no offense to the pro's in my previous posts, i was making a point and I don't like to drop names. most newbies don't jump into the fire of the pro class-other than Vlad the real Russian Rocket.

How about Noah! Congrats at Breckenridge! what did I say last year after the Worlds? I already predicted it! the dude is fast!

I started a topic in the OFF TOPIC forum dedicated to being a sloppy drunk. I have found it's a much better state of mind that I could ever imagine compared to playing drums. On that topic this afternoon, Henry Julier posted the following:

Well, I'm only 18, but I'd love to be a sloppy drunk skater. It sure beats being a lame drummer or a posing moron who can't read or go to the right website!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later, in an effort to preach to us what he thinks is right and how we need to do things differently to suit his ideas, the South Florida God Of All That Is Slalom In The Comfort Of His Easy Chair adjusted Jar Jar's words to say the following:

What's funny is that the South Florida God Of All That Is Slalom In The Comfort Of His Easy Chair is the FIRST ONE to scream how Eric Groff takes him out of context. By carefully editing Jar Jar's remarks, it appears that he wants something completely different than what Henry said. So who is taking whom out of context?

Henry said that being a sloppy drunk at any age is better than being a posing moron.

Can't say as I blame him. Also, can't wait til the next time the whimpering and crying starts about how Eric Groff takes words out of context.

Oh, I won't be as feckless as the South Florida God Of All That Is Slalom In The Comfort Of His Easy Chair and put any words into anyone's mouth (or type words and then credit them to someone without permission.) If Henry wants to correct my interpretation of what he said, I'll leave it to him.

Another humorous moment provided by Brady-

I get an email from El Scabo, saying-

"Found a typo in your website, in the Construction section, to expensive should be too expensive.
Best regards,
Brady"

Of course, by referring to 'my' website Brady meant icksticks.com.

Im not sure what Brady was smoking, but the typo that he called me on was on http://www.pocketpistolskates.com.

Even more puzzling was that he emailed the typo correction to icksticks@aol.com, which was then forwarded to me.

?! wow.

I`m 66.21 on the other board and 66 is just a wee short of the real deal...just a wanna be...heh heh!!

OK, so who in the top ten is just a keyboard racer? I can hear the excuses now. Actually, I`d prefer not to....

Henry San- young weedhopper,

I know this is the smack talking part of the forum- but I think the open class racers- And the pros- are some of the best people I have met in my life. Realistically would you rather be stuck on a desert island with some average Joe or with a racer that you have minor differences with? I bet you'd pick the racer everytime.

If this sport was really full of jerks- I would pretty much leave- I've got other skills to hone where they will be appreciated. I have done other sports where egos get ridiculously inflated- the local snowboard pro at a rinky dink 1000 vertical foot mountain with the huge ego comes to mind- then the pros come visiting and -POP!- goes the ego.

People in general can be difficult- just ask anyone about me...I'm probably the contest organizers worst nightmare- mostly because I want to win and don't pay as much attention to the program as I should. As a racer if I slow up the show in attempts to catch my breath to enhance my chance of winning- ...things might happen. Hey- it's racing.

But in every racer there is something to be learned. Even if a racer does EVERYTHING wrong- you can at least learn from THEIR mistakes.

I'm thankful that there is a racing scene and I try to drop in on as many racing scenes as I can to get things moving.

What if I never met Ritchie Carasco, Steve Evans, Charlie Ransom, Steve Olson, Dave Hackett, Duane Peters, Henry Hester, Gary Fuitt, Chris Chaput, Ed Economy ? Those guys that have been competeing in the Magazines since the 70's. Well my life wouldn't be as much fun....and that isn't counting all the cooler newer racers I met. This smack talking forum was created so there is a place where you can readily tell straight talking from smack talking.

So take all the online stuff with a grain of salt and if you get frustrated- instead of getting annoyed just stop reading and instead-
1. Introduce a new skater to slalom
2. train him to be competition for yourself

and you'll be happy having someone to race with who might actually beat you. You'll soon forget about any online frustrations because you'll have real life frustration with you.

Nothing makes the sport more fun than having someone to race with who is within .02 seconds of your time all the time. Online frustration is nothing compared to that.

Games are the most fun just in the instant before you lose....and in the ocassional times that you win- just ask the video gaming industry.

My thought is let it go. Eric Groff is banned from here, it is over. He cannot defend himself or jump on anyone. Email him. when things are aired publicly that is when anyone can jump in. I wrote another page but deleted it as it was pretty negative and I am trying to be positive. Positve things will outweigh the negative things and after a while the memories fade. some ego is ok, I mean let's face it, that is why there is racing. although with slalom the biggest race is within yourself. I am so sorry I will miss Breckenridge, my surgery has not healed as quickly as i wanted and I am just getting to the point where I can do 25 situps. Henry, I was looking forward to racing you. Skate safe.

I like your post George.

I find myself in a conundrum every day- I like Eric Groff as a person, he is fun to skate with, his son is really cool, and Eric Groff has been generous to me in the ways you pointed out. I love that Herr Vaughnster, It has seen a lot of riding time by various individuals and currently my sister is riding it alot, and she is getting into slalom. I love my Big ICK, and ride it more than my little one. I love going to California and slaloming.
But then, Eric Groff will start bashing my friends and "left coasters" etc etc... its hard for me not to get pissed off. How can I feel grateful towards someone who insults my friends via the web and email?
I still like the guy, when I can ignore his posts that is.

Hey there Henry, since you posted I feel I have give post my side. Although I have been called one of Eric Groff’s minions, he can take care of himself.

When I rediscovered slalom in 2001, it was through the NCDSA. I have been a long time skater. I couldn’t believe what I read and was blown away by the posts. I never thought the forum was for kids and it was pretty brutal. I found myself wanting to race and not posting until I raced at La Costa 2001. Scroll back years and check out the arguments on cone sizing, boards, starts, criddling etc., ad nauseam. Was needed for the growth of slalom? Has it hurt or helped? For whatever reason if you slalom and post, a person better be thick skinned. Hugh R helped explain a lot of it to me, Eric Groff was pretty helpful too. From what I understand they don’t even speak to one another now. But, even “back then” and all the way back to the 70's there are guys that have gotten into it with each other about everything. In skateboarding’s history (when wheels were 30mm) I had to search hard and buy what I could, just to keep skating the way I wanted, 70's style carving and ditches mostly. I am over 40 and everyone I skated with quit. When I am at a race, and up on the ramps grinning, I am having a blast, but I also really want to win. It is such a stoke to race with skaters of all ages and to see who survived and can still skate. I hope that slalom does grow and survive, and eventually pays some of the athletes what they are worth. I also hope it never loses it’s individuality. For that reason I like my open class status and the fact that I pay for my equipment. I write what I want and what works for me. Henry, you have been posting and reading long enough to see others change their minds midstream according to their sponsor.

Remember people know that Eric Groff started your Big Ick fund. I know he GAVE you a Herr Vaughnster. Do you know how hard I tried to get one of those in 2001? Watch Mollica’s 2002 Worlds video, Steve Olson wrecks after the finish in one of his heats, he asks about his board as soon as he gets up. I was there. Why? Because there weren’t that many Herr Vaughnster boards!
Just a few short years ago equipment was harder to come by. People actually waited weeks for Indy 101's and Trackers were still in the future. A few pros had offsets. As for bearings, I would say be your own man and don’t let anyone tell you what to ride. Pleasure Tool ceramics seem to be doing pretty well. We both believe in Ick Sticks, you are tall and thin, I am pretty thick, physicall and mentally  I know our boards are set up differently. Ride what works for you.

I am happy there is good equipment. I am glad new racers are coming to race. I think that people can buy stuff and because they are athletic they do well, they get to spout off without knowledge of history. I am not directing this towards you. But, this does anger some old time skaters. I have seen Dennis Shufeldt pick up trash (and that is how much he loves skateboarding and slalom!), Is this right? To me it is the equivalent of having Mario Andretti sweep before Indy or Hank Aarron clean up before little league. If people don’t want to show up at a race because of Eric Groff that is too bad, I will say there are way bigger assholes racing than him. Ego trips and dynamics of the Psych-out are a very big part of racing. I don’t really like it, but that is the way it is in every competitive sport. It is because we are so small and have direct contact that people get into it all the time. If you or anyone else wants to race, show up and have a good time. The open class is not like the pro class, although we have our jerks too. Most of us will cheer competitors, are happy for good clean and safe runs, share equipment and basically be stoked. Later.

Yes I agree- you even saw people within their own teams at each others throats. Bruce Brewington and I got into a huge fight over the last piece of chocolate soffle'. SWAT teams were called in to control the situation.

Later Farid the photographer had to talk Kenny and I down from jumping off the water cannons at the Trocadero to our death in what would appear to be a tragic murder suicide.

Riots broke out over each skater trying to wrestle the Trophies out of each others hands- people were spitting everywhere.

Other than the running of the Bulls in Spain there is more chaos at a slalom contest than anywhere else.

It is now clear that each slalomer should be kept in an individual cage until his name is called for his run.

gotta chime in here as well - my wife didn't care about the tower, the racing, or the skating pictures...

she wanted to know what Gilmour and Vlad were wearing. (loved the "disco's not dead, just resting" shirt)

and JG didn't let us down...vlad - you need to huddle with Dalv and get back in the game with the outfits.

seriously,

We forgot to take “overly exaggerating” racing pictures in Paris! We’ll have to go back for that.

My wife asked me when I told her there were pictures from Paris up...."How cute are the girl(s) in the picture with Gilmour...THIS TIME!"

I think I know all of Seinfeld. By heart.
Do you know how hard is it to live with all this junk in your head? Do you?

Victoria got home at one o’clock last night. Her entire work place (all women) spent 4 hours looking at the Paris pictures. The girls didn’t want to see the Tower or the slalom comp. They only wanted to see Gilmour.

That is pretty gay.

As for old Gay Paree` I decided to do the ultimate gay thing for a skateboarder to do- race on Inline Skates. Riding one foot on a slalom deck is nearly the same as riding one foot on Inline skates...I wanted to lay down a blistering one foot slalom speed run as someone who never practices Inline and hopefully win.

But in order to do that I really had to take it over the top. I needed the outfit. The ultimate Inline skating outfit.

Many fashion conections were made. There could be no confusion with my slalom skateboarding outfits...but those were already pretty out there.

The inspiration could only come from the man who first comes to mind when thinking of Inline.

LIBERACE!

So without having thousands of dollars for said outfit- I had to do the best I could. First....borrow someones skates.

Next realize I'm wearing skates at the Eiffel tower wearing a silver sequin shirt- shades of Saturday Night fever crept in.

At this point I think it was just too much for the Inline skate community....mysteriously ALL INLINE Skating Events were canceled soon after me donning the shirt. (for real)

With all the Inline events canceled due to the ineveitable shame I would bring to the sport- I had to make the best of it. So what could I use this outfit for to my advantage? Quickly remembering that extremely attractive models seem to feel comfortable around gay men I decided to test the theory.

So Henry there may be an advantage to your dress- just don't buy it at Old Navy.

Henry,

I think Eric is having this "driving syndrome". You know people who are really nice and friendly but when they get into a car and start driving they lose control of their social behaviour. Maybe in our digital age we have a new syndrome "the forum syndrome" that is spreading.

Hmmmm . . . Vlad, Gilmour, Mollica and Brewington all in France.

Sort of gives new meaning to "ol' Gay Paree," don't it?

Every time Eric Groff posts it makes me want to distance myself from him and everything he stands for. I have met many of the SSS team guys and all are gentlemen on and off the hill. I was talked into getting some ousts by Richy and Rene, and I like them a lot and am proud to sport the Oust logo, but everytime I see Eric Groff disrespecting other skaters in the name of a product, it makes me wanna go rip the sticker off my board and replace it with a Bones or PT one. Eric Groff gives SSS a bad name. I have met him myself and he is a very nice guy, his son is the coolest as well. But I cant see a resemblence between the Online Eric Groff and the Real Eric Groff. I'm not gonna lie- I don't understand it.

Eric, your antics have even caused a number of beginner slalomers that I know to hesitate when signing up for a race they thought you were going to be at. What if those people had not known me and gotten the whole scoop on your personality? It is frightening that your antics are scaring people away from slalom events.
