Chris, if you are talking about the World Ranking it's very difficult to get a high ranking if you only enter local competitions. Also if you don't enter a minimum (4) of certain higher World Ranking status competitions. And, also if you don't enter one of the Majors each year (one on each side of the Atlantic). There are some competitions where you should go to improve your ranking position and stand up against those with simular goals.
Take Luca last year (2004) for example. He only entered 3 competitions but missed out on the most important Major status event. That made him fall in the rankings. In his case not because he was not good enough but because he didn't compete enough (plus missing the Major). The Major status is there to force the very best to come and race each other if they want to fight for the highest placements in the World Ranking. This year it's Paris May 15-17 on this side of the Atlantic. Unfortunatley very early on in the season but so be it. Everybody who comes will be well rewarded with World Ranking points. You too, Chris.
