2006 winter training?

Post by Chris Eggers » Wed Mar 08, 2006 3:46 pm

Who has already practiced in 2006?

Germany and Switzerland and Austria are having the heaviest snowfall since 50 or more years and it is still cold and wet. I bet Ramon has shoveled a path on a secret mountain road and the airflow guys probaply have a secret nuclear bunker dry, heated, and lit somewhere in the swiss alps and are beating cones to death.

I am urging to skate outside, but I just can´t.
There is gravel on the roads and it either rains or snows....................

Who has the luck to ride in warmer climates?

tell me how it feels, I want to cry...............

Chris,

It's early March and so far I've RACED in three events: The Dublin, Georgia Outlaw in January, Pump Station in California a week later and the Texas Outlaw Cold Fusion Sizzler two weeks ago. Plus, i've had two good sessions on the road in Georgia with the GASS boys down there (a 3rd was rained out in Atlanta back in December.)

I've been able to practice this winter just about unabated with the exception of a few rains days. I have a FLAT spot where I can set up my 5.5-foot practice course with no interference:

Image

I've asked in the Down South forum if anyone wanted to race here, but the response is zero. I guess the time-honored technique of speed through pumping isn't appealing. Oh, well. My attitutde is that if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. Generating speed from nothing is as important as just taking advantage of an incline. And, of course, no need to brake.

Well, it's 10:20 here on the US East Coast. I've been up since 4 AM and have put in about four hours on a project. I'm going to skate now while it's warm, mild and cloudless. Then, back to work this afternoon.

Like the French do it!

Thanks,

Chris,

My guideline is simple: in practice try and make it as unmakeable and complicated as possible! Make it tight, jagged, offset, varied and as long as you can fit it in your space. If you're PRACTICING and not hitting any cones, then your wasting your time and just skating. PRACTICE should be about skating beyond your ability and working up to a new skill level. You don't get to new skill levels by just getting faster where you are. You have to REACH and in slalom you do that by setting VERY HARD courses. First, make the course "impossible." Then skate it til it's possible. Run it a few times then make it harder. Improve. Harder. Advance. BAM! You're there.

Then, when you go to a race and the course setter sets some 7-foot hybrid you blaze like a bat out of hell! I use this analogy a lot, but it's applicable and I'll repeat it here. In baseball the batter goes out to the batter's circle and uses a heaviliy-weighted bat to warm up. He swings this weight all around and gets to feeling like the bat is almost normal. Then, when he goes up to the plate and takes the weight off, his bat feels like a feather. The same is true in slalom: practice courses that are heavily weighted and impossible. Then, when you race and the course is lightened up, everything is easier.

For races, I like a course that does three things: allows for very fast skating, feels very rhythmic and most importantly challenges a racer without making it impossible. I firmly believe that SLALOM is a combination of speed and rhythm. There is a difference between "skateboard slalom" and "running an obstacle course on your skateboard." I don't like obstacle courses EXCEPT when I practice. When I race, I like to slalom.

here in berlin the same - we had two pratice sessions in 2006. we took the chance of a few dry hours. one session was about 3 or 4 weeks ago and the last one was last sunday.

both sessions were for about two hours, before it started to rain or to snow again.

anway our time will come - but we are lucky with our skatehall here in berlin, which helps us to survive ....

cheers

Ahhh....just got back from a 4 hour pool session (HaHa- Smile)
I can`t complain. But it seems to me so weird that the only dry spot in town a pool is,
and it`s the only practice you can get these days...few weeks ago we had only one single sunshine day. I set up some cones as tight as I could and was able to practice at least tree hours...that was good and that´s about it.

rain, rain, rain,
it´s always the same...
At least you keep up your off-board activities.

Stockholm:
-14C and snowing again. It's been snowing pretty much everyday since mid january.

Still it's slalom every tuesday or wednesday in a warm, pretty clean garage with a mellow slope. They don't kick us out since we have permission and a startramp! So look out for some fast swedes this summer...

I'm heading down to Erin Office Park to session with Ga. Tom. If anyone wants to come and run some cones, we'll be there at noon and skate til we're tired.

Tom, I'll bring your cones!
I don't like double posting, but I put this in the DOWN SOUTH forum this afternoon. I just wanted to spread the love a little to all the folks in Sweden, Germany and elsewhere. Just think of us while y'all are all huddled around the fireplace wrapped in blankets and struggling desperately to stay warm!

Complaining about too much snow when you live in Austria or Switzerland??

I believe there's a little something called "The Alps" somewhere around there.

You should check it out.

You use something called a "Snowboard" or maybe some "Skis" to slide down "The Alps".

It's probably a lot of fun.

Please..... I would give my left nut to be where you are now.

I'm not joking. The forecast for Dublin, Georgia has been updated:

Sunday: Intervals of clouds and sunshine. Very warm. High 87F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.

Geez. Bring the ice water and cold packs!!

Yes Terry! It's in the eastern part of the province, at the doors of the Gaspé peninsula. Really small area but oh so sweet! :D

That pic was taken on the north side of the mountain where there's only 6 (ungroomed)runs and no lift. You have to take an old yellow school bus back to the chairlift on the other side.

Here's another one from one of my buddies on a different day.
