Don't shave them. All you would be doing would be to remove the radius. That's a very small amount of urethane, but very helpful at the moments when you lose traction and need to scrub or control a slide. No-Skools are not like Avalons where the thin lip can sometimes be a liability. Only one person has ever given me a good reason for taking off the radius: Michael Dong. He wanted the wheels to be lighter. That was it. Not that I want to contradict Mr. Dong, as if I could, but my feeling is that the radius is a useful thing. Just my humble opinion, of course.

If you do want to shave them, place them in a lathe and use a very sharp knife. Press the blade into the wheel perpendicular to the wheel surface so the lathe doesn't try to snatch the blade away. You can also use a file or sandpaper but in that case you must wear a good dusk mask or respirator. I've also had good success lathing things in my drill press. Mount the wheel on a bolt with the necessary washers and nuts to hold it tight and place the bolt in the drill chuck.

Is urethane poisonous?

Yes, "free" urethane is very toxic. One should take every precaution possible so as to not breath the dust or fumes when shaving urethane.
