That is true with the commercial Pinewood Derby timers that are available, but if you build a simple parallel port sensor system, then that race software will do the timing up to any max time limit that you set. You can find several plans listed at

Cheap software that could be re-worked for slalom racing. It lists several timing systems that integrate to automatically record the times in the program.
