basic stuff is 1m80 center to center in straight line, we generally call that a tight slalom, fine on flat or moderate slope. then you vary around. on a fast slope 2m will feel like 1m80. longer distance if offset: a 30/40cm offset will fit 2m40.
you can put cones in curved lines too, and alternate with offsets etc., that makes a special, what we often like best.
Beginners will be in trouble keeping speed on flat but it's fun. A big giant on a big slope will attract more riders, last summer we [coneRacing team] organised a little giant slalom into a longboarders' event and it was pretty successful.
You can log into Riderz.net to participate french style cyberslalom contest, or go to NCDSA for the US style stuff, but it's much more difficult. Both will motivate a small group of riders to optimise their pumping.
Big slope is more macho and advanced riders will go for it, but the general public is very fond of flat technical practices.
