Paris Slalom World Cup 2006 - Nations Cup

It's time to register your team for the Nations Cup event!

This is a "fun" event, but the honor is there and we have specially designed trophies which will be a memorable piece for the top three teams. Which is the fastest national team? Can the Swiss defend their latest title? Will Italy throw them off the podium, now that they may come with a full team. Or Canada participating for the first time? Or Latvia who'll also have a full team this time around? Will USA come back and bring the trophy to USA again? France will have a stronger than ever team this year. What can they do to stir things up? And the Germans, how are they when they get together as a team. Sweden, UK and Russia will want their share of the glory too, so it looks really promising.

Registration is open until Friday 18.00. No extra entry fee requested. For registrations or changes to your team at the race site, please talk to Corky, who'll be coordinating this event.

A team consists of:
- 3 riders from the same country + 1 or 2 reserves
- Pro/Am/Women racers can be mixed

A country can register more than one team.

Mixed country teams are only allowed if a country does not have enough racers to fill up a team. Such a team must be accepted by the race committee, which may refuse for whatever reason they see fit.

The qualification score is calculated by taking the final result of each team member during the three other events: giant, tight and special, but counting only the best two. Each result is scored using the World Ranking points for a Major status event and added up to obtain a total score for the team. That score is used to determine how the teams will meet in the finals. (The fine print: Pro points are worth more than Am points. Womens points are worth slightly more than Am points).

Only the top 8 teams will race in the finals, but all registered teams will be listed in the final results.

The teams will meet in a standard head-to-head format as follows:

1 vs 8
4 vs 5
3 vs 6
2 vs 7

Within a team the riders will be ranked according to their total score during the weekend. The best rider becomes the teams no 1, the second best no 2 and finally no 3.

In each round the teams' racers will meet as follows:

A1 vs B1
A2 vs B2
A3 vs B3
A1 vs B2
A2 vs B3
A3 vs B1
A1 vs B3
A2 vs B1
A3 vs B2

The A team in the listing above is always the team that had the best qualification position. It has the advantage of being able to choose the course which will remain the same during the round.

The course will be a special slalom, probably similar to the one used during the special slalom Pro race, but may be adapted by the race committee to suit the Nations Cup race (for example if the special Pro course was deemed to hard, it may be made easier or vice versa). Each round consists of only one run. Times are recorded and cones are counted as usual. Best time with any cones added wins 1 point.

The first team that scores a total of 5 victories/points against the riders of the other team, advances to the next round.

After the final registration on Friday, a team may still replace one of their riders, but only with one of those registered as a reserve, in case of accident or if a registered racer is not able to participate in the Nations Cup final. That racer automatically becomes their no 3 rider and his/her qualification score is not taken into account (even if it would improve the teams qualification score). A reserve may register as a reserve in more than 1 team, but will only be allowed to race in one.

Thank's to Pierre Samray for inventing the Nations Cup race format and providing the details. The rules have been slightly modified to the PSWC organizers liking.

We welcome your team registrations here in this thread and also any questions related to the Nations Cup race. No team registration is available on the official event site. You are free to modify your teams up until Friday at 18.00. The final listing of the teams will be presented Saturday at the race site.

Wishing you all a great fun race!

/Jani

I've split these posts out from the general Paris topic to let us concentrate on these on the side of the general Paris thread.

That German team looks very, very strong.

Ramon,

You've got a pretty interesting challenger there, form one exceptional team and four ordinary or spread out the top guys to create several Swiss teams that can make it into the finals. Only 8 teams get to race in the finals and you may actually make it with several teams. What if 3, 4 or 5 out of 8 teams would be Swiss?

We're looking forwards to evalute your thoughts and decisions!

we should have it set up to allow the greatest number of different nations.

I agree, but do we really want to limit to one team per country in the finals?
I guess we could. It probably makes it more interesting.
It's one aspect we did not consider when setting up the rules.

Opinions?

It won't be new to have two or more Swiss teams. Team Indiana Switzerland and Team Airflow Switzerland, regularly makes it into the finals.

If you have enough time, allow as many team's as possible for a qualification.

give every team one qualification run per rider, count the times together and you have the best 16/8 teams in the Final.

16 teams x 3 rider = 48 runs / two lines = 24 start's.

1.30 min per run x 24 start's = ca. 45 minutes for the Nationcup qualification

Why is this better:

If you look at the results from the official races, you have diffrent pointtables for Pro/Am/Women Perhaps there are some Am who had better times than a pro, but they get less points. If you have a look on the Anitbes race from 2005 where the course for Am and Pro similiar was, you have some Am who were faster than some of the Pro's.

Those times when we made a difference between the teams are over I guess ;)

The problem with making teams is that nobody actually cares about yet. We will decide in Paris during the contest if that was possible.

The problem several Swiss teams making it into the finals could be solved by a qualification group that exclusivly contains Swiss Teams...but I don't know how fair this would be...Make a proposal...

2 teams per nation?

im not trying to sneak Canada in there, I know we have an uphill battle to make the top 8 teams.

I also think that a limit of two teams per nation could be reasonable.

Time is counted. We have to free a part of the Trocadero quite early on Sunday (before 18:00).

hm...two teams is no fun for all the Swiss riders. From our point of view the most important achievment of the nations cup is fun. We don't really think about how to form a team that might be the most competitive but the most interesrting to compete with (of course we would not form complete loser teams if you know what I mean...)

So please let compete at least 3 teams per nation...

We've already announced that you can have more than 1 team per country, otherwise the most logical limitation would be one per country.

I don't favour applying the two team per country rule. If really Switzerland can get 3 or 4(!) teams into the finals I think they are really worth it. Then we can change the rules for future events to avoid the European slalom super power to steal all the glory.

In the spirit of jingoistic altruism, extended colonial and commonwealth adoption papers typically accepted. Right, Lee?

Oh yeah, Lee Diamant is coming and I guess he would really welcome to join an "extended colonial and commonwealth" Team!

The next time, we will have a second french team...

I didn't notice that team spirit could be so intense in an individual sport like slalom ! I even noticed that the french spectators were very supportive. It's a good way to promote the sport...

ps: Congrats to my french mates who did a such good performance ( 4th ) !
