Encountered similar at Statesville, Martin. At least that's my excuse! Hannover 2006 was fast in setting up and then had an uphill breeze the following day. Long courses are always going to have some sort condition-affected result. However the good guys always seem to come out on top.
But Morro was exceptional.

Michael Stride wrote:Look, all this speculation about weather is soul destroying for me and everyone else involved in Cadwell.

ALL the organisation into bringing on the event carries on regardless of any weather forecasts. And if I have to repeat it untill I am blue in the face, we have NO WAY of knowing what the weather will be like until VERY close to the event. Particularly at Cadwell, nestled as it is in the wolds, and in a valley.

Saying it will rain, be very windy, etc etc, does nothing to encourage people to come, and in fact deters them form planning on going.

It doesnt do anything to change the weather, of course, but being pessimistic does no one any good, except persuade people who were never going in the first place to simply not bother.

Some people didnt come to Wasteland comps because of bad weather predictions and regretted it when we did actually race.

I will of course make a new trophy called 'The I told you so' trophy for the racer who in the opinion of the judges has been the worst forecaster on any forum.
That last post of mine was me having a laugh with sam....CHILL! This was my recent post on NCDSA:
On 1/28/2008 Martin wrote in from (78.86.nnn.nnn)

Now don't go getting your knickers in a twist Don, its the British way to talk about the weather, its what we do...I don't think there has been any more talk about the weather for this event than there was for the Andover demo, Bish Bash OR Wasteland. And you know what? At the end of the day we'll all do what we always do...turn up and skate!
We all know how changeable British weather is, and even when they say 'no chance' we still turn up and even then there is usually a window when we can skate.
I told Michael a long time ago when he was first worried about putting this race on that it is the one aspect you cannot control, so you organise everything else and let the competitors take some responsibility for their actions.

Now the greatest gathering ever of skaters in the Uk will be a blast to be at, whatever happens...See you there!

Martin.

ps.David, most Southerners think the North starts at Watford anyway - looking forward to seeing you again, its been at least 4 years!!!!

I have jus sent this out to those who have signed up on the NCDSA site, but its relevant for those whomay not have entered yet, or are coming and not competing.

This will probably be the last update before the Cadwell race, sent to all those who have signed in to the NCDSA sign up page.If you know anyone who is coming who has not signed up, please encourage them to do so and forward this email to them, just so we have a good idea of who to expect and approximate numbers. If you have signed up but cant now come, shame, see you next year!

Saturday Night
We will be meeting at the Royal Oak (Splash) from 7.30pm
The Royal Oak Inn
Watery Lane
Little Cawthorpe
Louth
Lincolnshire
LN11 8LZ http://www.royaloaksplash.co.uk/

Please find attatched the UKGSA waiver, if you want to print it out and bring it along signed it will save you a little time. We are still encouraging people to pay beforehand 15 pounds via paypal to: ukssa01@gmail.com

On race day you will need to go to the main sign in tent, from 8.am, this will be away from the slalom hills, together with the downhillers and soapbox racers. Mingle!

Make your way over to the slalom hill for practice. GS is first, to allow a bit of flexibility on scheduling, we have some racers arriving on the Hull ferry, if they should arrive late we want to be able to fit them in. Pracice should start at 9.30. Race runs will start after a suitable time.

Rules
Helmets MUST be worn at all times when skating. Please respect this rule.
GS will be timed as single runs. After you are told you may go, YOU will break the beam to start the clock. We will have a radar speed trap for a seperate prize for fastest recorded speed at that point.

Dual will be single start, seperate finish. When the final start beep sounds BOTH clocks start. We will have a false start indicator. The start beep will be a random sound within a 5 second window. If you cross the start line before the final beep it will indicate a false start and alsoprevent that final beep from sounding. You will be alerted to a false start by a seperate alarm sound.

As we shall be using beams, do not pass through them unless you are racing, and also do not cross them twice after you finish or they will re-set the clocks and your time may not be recorded. Look out for other people crossing the gates, and dont pass through your rivals gates!!!

All rules follow the ISSA rules as far as possible. Disputes need to be reported to the judges as soon as possible where a decision will be made.

Prizes:
GS Pro, 1st 100 euros, 2nd 60 Euros, 3rd 40 euros, 4th entry fee returned
Dual Pro, as above

The other races will share the schwag pool of prizes.

Finally, drive carefully, safe trips everyone and see you there!!

The same course will be used by pros AND ams, due to time scales, but rest assured it will be more pro than am, and more tight than loose. The Brits have a reputation for fast, tight and steep.

I would rather ams experienced a pro course and either went slower or dq'd than have a very easy course. The alterative is an easier course that the pros wont find a challenge. I am convinced it is better to push the Ams into improving their game.

Thios should give the ams a chance to compare directly their times with pros, and weed out the sandbaggers!!!

The course will be set by a committee....but I will make sure their feet are chained together so they can't put the cones too far apart.

News from Gecko's Head Honcho Jeff...

There should be 3 pre-production Decks (as opposed to prototypes for testing) at Cadwell. At least one of them will be set up for anyone to take out for a spin.
The demo board will be mounted with a "Skennet" front and an RT-S rear, to give a fairer approximation of what most people are using and to allow you to better assess the deck.I'll have one mounted with GOG's too.
The finished product will be cosmetically "prettier", but it will give you a flavour of the boards.

The full-blown production version will be unveiled at the Gothenburg Indoor Comp. One of these production decks will be sent as a prize to a rider of Jeff's choice, for either "Highest placed unsponsored Am" or "Most improved rider". The former is more likely as the overseas Am's are more of an unknown quantity.A Certificate will be awarded on the day to that effect.
There are some new improved features, not on the original proto that those at Cadwell will see first, so I won't spoil the surprise. Just suffice to say, one of them is pretty unique on a production board.
See you there,

Martin Drayton
Team Gecko.

Questions for the Organiser...

Post by Martin Drayton » Fri Feb 01, 2008 9:33 am

Just a few questions:
1) Will there be two qualifying runs to decide rankings for the Dual or will it be from your finishing position after the GS run(s)?
2) Will the racers be cone-heading as usual as they walk up the hill or will there be dedicated cone-heads to allow racers 'tweaking'time/a chance to stay warm, as the forecast is for freezing wind?
3) Any thoughts on course lengths/no. of cones/cones for DQ and penalties?

Thank you.

just a few questions here, even though they might come in way too late:
#1
what kind of asphalt are we skating on?
are there any chemical analizes available?
#2
is pelle allowed to wear his modified helmet with the furry mohawk again?
i'm asking because it might happen that some of the plastic hairs might get torn off the helmet by the heavy seagusts and then fly into the other racers nose causing him to sneeze and getting distracted.
#3
will there be a vendors booth sporting htis seasons new port-a--potties?

i know that i could have asked way before but please take your time from preparing the race off, again,to answer these questions from a concerned racer.

Sorry Donald to offend you YET again!

Post by Martin Drayton » Fri Feb 01, 2008 10:11 am

Sorry Donald to offend you YET again! I just thought it better to ask now as the information hasn't yet been available rather than people hassling Michael on the day with the same questions when he's got plenty other things to do. I had hoped that someone (who wouldn't make either you or Michael angry) might have asked by now, As an Organiser/Racer, you know this is information that most serious racers want to know surely?

I for one, am looking forward to seeing Pelle's helmet!....Now Port-potties-there's another question, ha-ha (that means that it is a joke before you get pissed off again-chill!).
Damn, you really don't like me do you....

Here's Michael's reply just in from another forum-
answers
On 2/1/2008 Michael wrote in from United Kingdom (87.114.nnn.nnn)

1) Qualifying for the Dual will be seperate from the GS. Two qualifying runs.

If weather or time fades the Dual will be decided on the rounds that have been completed and for non completed rounds on the qualifying times. This will ensure that racers really try for genuine good fast quifying times as it is possible that the race is halted - hopefully not.

I know some racers felt the dual should be done first, but with racers travelling a distance and arriving possibly during racing the GS allows for racers to be slotted in better /easier. I hope that if weather /wind condition differ greatly in GS we can all be grateful for a days skate, rather than whinge. Personnally id like to see Ella get the fastest time if a gust lifts her through the course.

It would be unfair to grade Dual times on the GS times as that would possibly lead to Tight specialists meeting at the 'wrong' point as the GS specialism is different.

2) We were hoping to have dedicated coneheads, but with weather and the local scouts on camp we decided the money we were going to donate to their cause would be better served in the UKSSA coffers. We would have had to pay out whatever the weather. I would expect that on the GS we would have dedicated coneheads from amongst our number, and on the tight Dual in the early rounds people walk the 'ladder of succes' and conehead for each other. If racers would prefer to duck out a tweak they can. Its up to them.

3) Course length.

Probably limited to 305m meters as that is the max cable length for GS. Cone number, dpends on course setter and settings.

Dual, we have a 160 m length limit I would imagine 40- 45 cone each side. But not neccesarily spaced out over that length...tight remember.

Cone penalty will be decided on the day, to suit the course, probably 2 10ths for GS 1 10th for Dual. Max number of cones, well the special conehead flipcharts go up to 5, but Id like to see 3 the max, unless conditions and advice changes that on the day.
See Don, he was fine about it....OK?

Full results tommorow.

The GS was run over 3 runs, best of counts. Weather was nippy, and breezy but I think a LOT of runs of practice and racing were acheived. Sadly time was againts us and only the FULL Pro and Ladies results for the Dual can be taken, the AMs sadly missed out on timed runs. This was due to starting late while the track dried. Mid to late morning.

Thanks for coming!

Lessons learnt:
Computers can slow things down, inputting and relying on their accuracy in simple functions, all times should be manually recorded as well. (The GS was done totally manually and worked well).

Cold weather eats batteries, Ella and Mick were (I think) the only racers who had to do re-runs due to timing malfunctions, so I think that wasnt too bad.

The weather prevented an early start, and also the use of both hills, so course setting couldnt be done although that did mean not having to remove ramps and eveything else.

I apologise to the ams for not being able to get timed runs on the dual, and realise that in effect canceles that race for them, and the Pros was shortened due to time. However I hope the decision to run 3 runs of GS was correct, otherwise we may have ended up with a shortend GS AND no Dual...a gamble I wasnt prepared to take.

Cadwell moved forward the time of finish, however they did run through lunch. Next year we will have to insist on a fixed finish time. And two days.

Thanks top those who helped with no reward....especially Edwin for being cheif cone marshall, and conveying the cone count accurately. He was amazing.

Sam and Rob for sign up, admin, scoring and adding up duties. Mick Reis helped too. Martin Drayton for litter duties. Pete Connelly for dismantling ramps, and Kris Yule, Mog, everyone else who helped assemble them.

I leave Cadwell wishing we had been able to do ALL the races, but I have to balance that with thinking we were lucky to have racing at all on the track, in February.

We can only improve this year and I feel we have the impetus to do so.

Best of all was that Frank Wheeler is back! Frank and I got to know each other primarily during the Czech summer camps in the late 80's. Plenty of fun!

I called him after the revival started a couple of years ago and asked if he shouldn't come and skate with us again - but no, he was done with skateboarding. Hmm, maybe not after all! Frank good to see you back on the board! Looking forward to talk to you one of these days!

yes I know.....

next time we do the Dual first, to make up for it. A difficult call, and I wish we could have gone longer.

Apologies.

You can have another crack at it then. Keep your trousers on!

Wow Mick was on fire... and Ella did great too!!
I suppose they are training together and that works!!!! Way to go!

We know about Swedes but it seems that Czech riders are also definitely back in the game for this new season!

Qualifying Times

Post by Michael Stride » Tue Feb 05, 2008 8:22 am

Hans G 10.81 10.59 TT 21.40
Dom K 11.14 10.56 TT 21.70
Mikka H 10.97 10.86 TT 21.83
Christo B 10.80 11.16 TT 21.96
Greg F 11.35 11.15 TT 22.50
Paul P 11.51 11.42 TT 22.93
Tomas P 11.65 11.75 TT 23.40
Martin D 12.10 11.62 TT 23.72
Josef S 12.16 12.26 TT 24.42
Peter K 12.40 12.78 TT 25.18
Chris L 13.70 DQ TT

Here are the qualifying runs with the TOTAL times that provided ranking. It has been mentioned that in qualifying only the fastest time counts, and if that had been the case Dom K would have qualified first, instead of Hans. Also Martin Drayton would move up one place to 7th swapping with Tomas P.

I am going to discuss this with Sam G and work out what we shall do, and how it may have affected things. Personnally I am of the veiw that as the race was VERY shortened, going straight through to the final rounds taking the total times, mimicking an actual round of competion as a total is a fair way to decide things (without the elimination element). But as I say we have to discuss this.

The reason for confusion was two fold. the spreadsheets on the computers seemed to produce an error, so we at the timing table manually recorded everything. With the need of urgency in using our radpidly diminishing time available we did throw people down the track. Also, the wind and cold did affect judgements and the main thing was to record accurately the times, and if necessary (as is the case now) correct things later. To that effect I did spot 1 miscalculted total, on Tomas P's times which were originally recorded as 11.65 11.75 and erroneously totalled as 23.30. This did not affect his position but shows how we were making mistakes in simple functions as cold, and pressure mounted.

The final rounds will be posted in full later, after the discussion.

As one of the competitors, but also as one of the riders affected by this decision (I'd rather get points for 7th than 8th), I felt that I wanted to give my opinion. As we know the NORMAL procedure is to take a riders fastest time for qualification and for final placing, to vary from this, I feel would to my mind make the award of ISSA Main status a question mark if the rules of convention are not going to be followed. I realise that 'in the heat of the moment' (definately no pun intended), decisions have to be made, but now in the 'cold light of day' (pun intended) we can as much as possible make things right.
Perhaps you may want to seek guidance from the ISSA?
Thanks,

After a quick discussion with Sam last night I know he felt the qualifying times should be on a single lane fastest time basis.

The reason why BOTH times were taken and inputted into the spreadsheet, but an error occured with one time causing the spreadsheet to not calculate the times and ranking correctly. With the cold ,wind, batteries running out on a laptop in minutes I would say we were rushed into a decision. I did ask at least three other people at the time who were expreienced racers what we should do, and this highlights the need for dedicated timers. Dan Gesmer was unable to attend, despite being in the UK the week before, and I feel his presence would have helped.

As a consequence, sitting here with a cup of coffee, in the warm, I think the normal procedure of fastest time should be the way to go. This is because a racer may very well 'take it easy' on one run, risking a mistake in their second, trading off the extra practice in the hope of speed gains.

If we had announced, before the racing, that the TOTAL times counted my veiw would be different. We did say that qualifying times would be used to calclate position in the event of a shortened race, however I feel that 'qualifying times' should be taken as the time the racer would have qualified with, not a combination of the two 'qualifying' times.

Consequently I feel the qualifying times should now stand for the fastest SINGLE times so Martin is now 7th, Tomas is 8th.

This decison does of course affect the bracketing, such as it was for the top 4. I hope that we can live with that and keep the top 4 positions as they were very close in times ,3 100ths in qualifying for Dom and Hans, 6 100ths between Mika and Josef, and using the fastest single method does not bring any changes to the top 4 racers, except for swapping Don and Hans as fastest qualifiers.

please, if you have not paid your entry fee to Sam Gordon get it sorted! This especialyl applies to 'pros' who have sponsorship. Entry was open a long time before the race and we kept it open untill the race itself.

I find it dissapointing that not EVERYONE paid Sam, or rather, the bank of Sam, as its the UKSSA who benifit from the monies.
