This event was held in Riga’s Olympic sports centre and was sponsored by ‘’Latvian skateboard federation’’, ‘’Nike 6.0’’, ‘’Rockstar Energy drink’’, ‘’ConeRacing.com’’.

The ‘’Skater of the year 2009’’ awards were given in two categories – street skateboarding and slalom skateboarding.

In slalom there were several nominations but the most important of course was ‘’Skater of the year 2009’’. The candidates were – European champion in PRO - Janis Kuzmins (Sk8kings, ConeRacing.com), World record holder and Latvian ranking 1st place - Gustavs Gailitis (Fullbag skates, ConeRacing.com), European champion in women group - Lienite Skaraine from Talsi.

And this year the title went to…..Lienite Skaraine!!!

European junior champion from Jurmala - Juris Grundulis - was awarded as ‘’Junior of the year 2009’’!

There were also some special awards with the help of ''ConeRacing.com'' – ‘’The comeback of the year’’ award went to Armands Sausins (O.S.S.G.) , who celebrated his birthday the day before, and Valdis Sermols.

The ''Biggest progress of the year'' for rider, who really has made a huge climb in results during the season 2009 went to Marks Kiselovs (Wheelbite Racing) and to Anna Gailite in women group.

Award for ‘’Long-term skating’’ (20 years on board) went to Edzus Konosonoks (stampa.lv), who becamed Finnish champion 2009.

And all 10 best riders in Latvian ranking were awarded too!

There were a few good attempts at wr 50.cones, but not clean. Ainars Jermačenko 9.50 and 2.cones Janis Kuzmins 9.62 and one cone. Gustavs made it clean with 10.31.

''Riga extreme'' slalom cup on 22nd August was organized by Riga city Sports department, where my father Gints now works.

The sun was shining, band ''PND'' was playing - we had a great day of racing!!!

This race was also the official debut for new slalom team from Latvia (more info soon...)!

The race started with Cyber slalom and the winner Gints Zommers almost managed to beat Janis Kuzmins Latvian record (Zommers did 8:47, Janis in Stockholm2005 - 8:45). I was second and upcoming slalom star, my trainingmate Marks Kiselovs was 3rd (it was his first podium in Latvian contests and he was very happy, because it is always so hard to race against much more experienced riders with better equipment...).

Second discipline was Tight slalom and in head-to-head finals I had to meet Marks already in the first round - I won the first run, he - the second, but I moved to semi-final. In final I beat Zommers by 0,34 sec. 3rd was European amateur vicechampion in amateur tight - Ainars Jermacenko.

Then we had a high jump contest and Edzus Konosonoks won with 135cm (at the race day, it was his 40th birthday!!!)

In street discipline Rudolfs Hencels won.

The biggest intrigue was in 1km pumping contest on flat (we had about 4m startbox for push start and then we just pumped all 1km distance). After first 800 metres Zommers was leading, but then I decided to overtake him. I won, Kiselovs was second. In last metres Aivars Karklins lost his 3rd place for more experienced Jermacenko.

Of course, there was also a junior and begginer groups in slalom (Begginers top3: 1.Eliza Gailite, 2Anna Gailite 3 Iveta Medne).

After the race everybody were tired and happy that the end of slalom season is far from over

Actually,the next race will happen this weekend in Liepaja (as you can see in the poster above) ,then after 2 weeks Latvian championships will happen on 1st of August (sponsored by ConeRacing.com ) and then,after one week best Latvian slalomers will represent Latvia in Policka - European championships ! ! !

It would be nice if we could finally could get BASIC status for this weeks race in Liepaja (it was asked already in 13th January...) and PRIME for Latvian championships!!!

This weekend race will include tight,special and also 100cone record attempt,but it will be held on flat and with cone distance 1,7m so Marcus can sleep calmly because it will be very hard to get close to his record




PS - the guy in the poster is Mārtiņš Liepiņš - the first guy from Latvia who used FULLBAG boards

Latvia open championship in slalom this year will be held on 1th August in Cesis region, Vaives municipality skiing and biathlon centre "Priekuli".
Start at 11:00 a.m.
Program: giant and special. 2 runs in each discipline.
Entry fee: 1,- lats (1,5 euro) for Juniors, 5,- lats (7,2 euro) for others.
Priekuli cup program: high jump (classic and ollie).
Registratin till July 30.

In gigant full protective equipment is obligatory (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, gloves) for each participant.

As you can see,Antonio,in the picture above (with me and Marks Kiselovs - another up coming slalom star and my training mate in one person (he was 4th in Policka GS last year,after first run even in front of Viking and Robert!!!), now I'm trying Fullbag Louis Ricard model - great board and I hope to conquer some more podiums with this board !!!
It is always easy to turn to 161 because they are superfast (World champions !!!) but I want to show to others that also other boards are fast or even faster

Great weekend in Jurmala!!!

Since 2005 World Cup race,MAIN races were held in Jurmala for last 4 years, but this year Baltic championships (PRIME event) was a fantastic event and it really proved it’s status – we had special t-shirts for this competition, Latvian National television was also present (the race was reflected in the news the same evening and soon there will be a footage in sports broadcast ‘’olimpiade.lv’’), we had piles of prizes!

The contest was held in a new place (small hill with fantastic surface but short course) because the previous one (next to the sea) was paved during the winter.

The air temperature was +22C (water temp. + 20C) !

It was really nice to meet riders also from Lithuania and Finland!

We had also afterparty in the heart of Riga centre – in Vecriga (Oldtown)with a cup of beer!

Thank you for encouragement and for making PAVEL boards - my first World Cup victory in AM was last year in Policka GS with ''Kowalski pro model''

I agree with Ramon that entry fees are too high and women deserve to get prize money - but that's another topic

Ditto! Most races are too expensive!

Two weeks ago I paid 60 Euros for a freeride in Belgium. That included Camping, 2x meals per day, shuttle all day long, course marshalls, safety measurements such as haybales and showers.

Amateurs pay 50 Euros and they don't get camping, shuttles, haybales etc. which is a lot of work for organizers. It's very easy to set up a slalom race. I don't understand why all the races have such high entry fee. It doesn't really help to encourage newbes to the sport to participate with such high entry fees.

So also for you Gustavs, it's a matter of money and high entry fee. I bet if the Pros entry fee wasn't so expensive more ("sandbagging") amateurs would turn pro. But if you're a student like gustavs or I was, you are really happy to even be able to go to an event that's far away. Gustavs is travelling all the way from Latvia only to pay €120 if he wants to race pro.


Just to compare, the Tunnel Slalom we put up cost €30 for Am and €35 for Pro. €10 of which we had to pay to the festival but every participant got a free ticket to use public transport on that day. So in fact the entry fee was only €20 for Am and €25 for Pro.

There was also prize money for women because they also deserve to get prize money.

Well,I am not way too fast for any AM (not yet and I really think that Dom was (is) a phenomenon in our sport) and my record was a result of the fact that majority of Latvian contests are held on flat and I train on flat only (but I hope that this will change soon).
I see the amateur division as a midway between juniors and PRO's and already at the beggining of last season I said that if I will finish on the podium in Euro's and World's I will turn PRO next year because all the best riders were there and I could compare my results with the best AM's but as we all know I finished far behind the top and a lot of guys who where in front of me are still AM's

Actually,that is the reason why my father won't come to Grenoble but I konw it will be a great contest with a lot of spectators and media!
And I just finished school and first of all I need to decide what I want to study because it is not a secret that slalom skater unfortunately is not a profession...

dom went pro during a season because he was way too fast for any am.
that was a very good and very fair decision he made there.
