[2013] European Slalom Championships, London [Major]

Post by Sam Gordon » Fri Dec 28, 2012 6:43 pm

The International Slalom Skateboarding Association (ISSA) Board of Directors and its European Status Marshals have awarded The 2013 European Championships of Slalom Skateboarding to LONDON.

Euros Info Pack website now online here:
http://www.Euro2013.co.uk

Image

It will be the first time since 1986 that the European Championships have been held in England. Back then it was held in Warrington, Cheshire, and was part of a larger skateboarding championship which also featured halfpipe, freestyle and high jump events. This time around the championships will be held at Redbridge Cycling Centre “aka Hog Hill”, which lends itself ideally to slalom racing (along with a number of other gravity sports). It has great on site facilities including a very well appointed café.

The European Championships are assigned as an ISSA Major Status race. Only one race event per continent is granted Major status each year and as such we expect to attract the fastest racers not only from Europe but the America’s too! It promises to be one of, if not The most competitive event of the year.
Over the three days riders will compete in three different slalom disciplines Giant, Hybrid and Tight. So get ready to witness some super-fast high adrenaline fuelled racing next summer – make a note in your diaries now!

Further announcements will be made in the coming weeks.

Interlude: Local point of skate interest about a couple of miles away is the Rom Skatepark: http://goo.gl/maps/JDqvi

Recent pics here: http://cakeaholicsanonymous.wordpress.c ... skatepark/
Thanks to Cakeaholics Anonymous for these shots

They say:
Ride the Original Concrete Skatepark. ROM. One of only a few original 70's Skatepark left in the world. All have ridden The ROM from Bob Haro to Matt Hoffman,Tony Hawk and Terry Price. Most come for the world famous pool and the unbeatable never ending lines of the Moguls. A 6-foot wooden spine ramp a 4-foot wooden mini ramp and a 6-foot mini ramp indoors for when the sun aint shining, along with curved wall rides, flat banks, grind boxes and quarterpipes. The rest of the Original ROM Skatepark includes the concrete performance bowl, snake run, four leaf clover bowl, concrete halfpipe and the freestyle area.

Camping:

As regards accommodation, the simplest, cheapest and nearest option is to camp at the Lambourne End Centre.
We have a field booking from Thursday 1st August to Sunday 4th August.
Once we have a charging system in place, the cost will be £15 per person, per night.
http://www.lambourne-end.org.uk/html/contact.htm
This centre is not typically a campsite for general use, so we have to be well-behaved in order to use it again.

Image

Hotels:

If you prefer not to rough it, then the nearest budget hotel is the Premier Inn, Romford West:
http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/ROMMOB/romford-west

Image

Despite my begging, they do not offer discounts.
Typical cost for a twin room will be around £270 from Thursday to Monday, so approximately £65 per night.

A touch more expensive and a little further afield is the Holiday Inn Express London - Newbury Park:

http://www.hiexpress.com/hotels/gb/en/l ... oteldetail

Image

This comes to around £85 pounds per night for a double room.
Internet offers might make this a bit more reasonably priced.

If you would like to go cheaper, then three miles away is Premier Inn, London Dagenham:

http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/LOND ... n-dagenham

Image

This is due south down the road from the race site in an area that is best known for building Fords on a grand scale. And nothing else.
Typical cost from Thursday to Monday is around £180 for a double room, so approximately £45 per night. The cost reflects the location.

There are many hotels available in Central London. This was a popular option with the Czech Team on their visit last year, and staying centrally means that family can enjoy the sights of London without having to trek back in from the suburbs. Do bear in mind that transit to the race site will be longer and that parking in Central London might be more of an issue. Hog Hill is on the East side of London, so try not to book a hotel in West London. (Note: The 'West End' is really just the west side of Central London and is not in West London).

The nearest Tube line to Hog Hill is Fairlop station. This is about a mile from the race site. Is is on the Central Line, right-hand-side of the loopy section (Red line).

European Championships – What you need to know.

Courses will be set by one Home and two Visiting racers on Thursday before the racing. Once set the courses WILL NOT be open for skating before the race days. We have access to the circuit for course setting only on Thursday 1st August; the track will be open to the public for cycling.

Courses will be set according to ISSA Rules:

8.8 Course Setting
The race organizer is responsible for setting the course. The method used shall be clearly stated in the race sanction application (who will set the course, description of course, when will course be set, etc.).
The course setter(s), or one or two riders they select, may briefly ride a race course while setting it to ensure that the course is suitable for the event. However, such testing must be kept to an absolute minimum. Any other practicing or training on the race course before the event, except during the official pre-race warm-up/practice session, is strictly prohibited.

Each racer will be limited to 1 practice run on each lane for dual courses and 2 runs on the GS. Each practice run taken will be marked off on the rider. Anyone who thinks it is clever to try and “sneak” extra practice runs or skate down the hill and cut in halfway down the course will be penalised with a DQ.

There is an area adjacent to the dual racing hill which can be used to set up a warm-up course, and we will provide some cones for riders to do this.

Due to the number of racers competing we will be ever conscious of the time factor. Therefore we ask that all riders ensure they know when they are racing and they are at the start and ready to race when their group starts.

There will be a second slave screen set up for racers to check their times, and we will also be providing printouts which will be prominently displayed. Only racers and officials will be permitted access to the starting area.

The Prize Purse for the Pros will be announced shortly after 2nd July, the final date for receipt of entry payments.

Other than the exceptions mentioned the race will be run according to ISSA Rules.

Lunch will be provided each day for racers and UKSSA Crew only.
Racers will be issued with a racer ID badge on a lanyard. This badge will have your name, nationality and racer class printed on it, as well as containing your three lunch vouchers. So please don’t lose it – you could always hang it around your neck?

You will have a chance to make any corrections to your racer class when we publish the final list of registered riders on 3rd July. Please check you are in the correct class that you wish to race in, if not we need know immediately. You will not be able to change racer class at the event.

There may be people who wish to interview you at the race site, please try to be helpful if you are asked. You can always show them your racer ID to ensure they spell your name correctly!

The Hog Hill Café will be open for the duration of the racing and serves a wide range of reasonably priced hot and cold food and drink.

We are allowing freeriding on other parts of Hog Hill while the dual racing is taking place on Friday and Saturday. Racers are welcome to join in the freeriding when they are not racing.

On Saturday evening we have arranged for a session at Rom Skatepark. Rom is one of the few ground-breaking ’70s skateparks still left standing in the UK.
It was built in 1978 and features a Classic Pool, (now showing its age but still very skateable), a Performance Bowl, Snake Run, Moguls, Four Leaf Clover bowls, Halfpipe, Slalom Run and Freestyle Area. There is also an indoor area with a variety of ramps, curved wall rides, jump box, flat banks, grind boxes and quarter-pipes.
We will be using the Slalom Run for a fun ’70s-style slalom race and we hope to have some suitable old setups to use.
For those that wish to skate the park for the session there will be a charge of £5 per head.

We know that some of you may prefer to go into Central London in the evening so, in order to help us plan ahead, please can you let us know if you would like to go to Rom on Saturday. We have a mini bus and drivers available that can shuttle people from the race site to Rom and back.

For more information on Rom go to: http://www.romskatepark.com/Home_Page.php

Hi Mika,

I presume you are referring to the apparent “late” entry for Joe? I had been in contact with both Richy and Maria from early on in the Euros planning stages, I was asked on the last day of sign up if there was still room for another entrant I said that there was. I said that I needed confirmation first thing the next day - two days before the payment deadline. I thought that it was for Richy but it turned out it was for Joe. With Karl and Eddy that made up 3 US racers, our first US entrants in a UK race since probably when Greg “Hell” Fadell was here back in 2008 at Cadwell Park!
In hindsight I should have put "A SK8Kings Rider" on the list of Pro entrants when I posted the final list up.
While on the subject of mistakes I also omitted one other UK rider from the entry list, Chris Charalambous. He sent me a text message about 4 months ago asking me to me to sign him up as he had no internet access. I deleted the text and forgot to add him but that was discovered and rectified when he called me to ask about camping.
None of us are perfect and when you are one of only two or three people organising an entire event for 100 racers things can get overlooked.

There is an area adjacent to the dual racing hill which can be used to set up a practice/warm up course and we will provide some cones for riders to do this.

Due to the number of racers competing we will be ever conscious of the time factor therefore we ask that all riders ensure they know when they are racing and they are at the start and ready to race when their group starts. We will make regular announcements during racing to keep people informed.

There will be a second slave screen set up for racers to check their times and we will also be providing print outs which will be prominently displayed. Only racers and officials will be permitted access to the starting area.

Racers will be issued with a racer ID badge on a lanyard. This badge will have your name, nationality and racer class printed on it as well as containing your three lunch vouchers. So please don’t lose it – you could always hang it around your neck?

The Hog Hill Café will be open for the duration of the racing and serves a wide range of reasonably priced hot and cold food and drink.

We are allowing freeriding on other parts of Hog Hill while the dual racing is taking place on Friday and Saturday. Racers are welcome to join in the freeriding when they are not racing.

On Saturday evening we have arranged for a session at Rom Skatepark. Rom is one of the few ’70s skateparks still left standing in the UK.
We will be using the Slalom Run for a fun ’70s-style slalom race and we hope to have some suitable old set ups to use.
Any skater that wishes to skate the park will need to pay for the session, which I understand has just recently gone up from £5 to £7.

There will two 7 seater’s available, one kindly provided by Andy Turner and one hired by the UKSSA, for transporting those in need to and from Hog Hill to Rom – Rom to campsite.

Friday 2nd August

9.30 am – Welcome & Main Rider briefing

10.00 am – Tight slalom practice begins – one run on each course only (to be marked off on skaters wristband?)

PLEASE NOTE: If more time is needed for the Pro’s to arrive, to ensure they don't miss out we will consider starting the practice runs with the Ams. Otherwise we plan to limit practice sessions to those about to race only.

Pro's will have their own tight course

10.45 am - Tight qualification and racing. Pro’s will run first then the rest.

Sunday 4th August

10.30 am – GS. Pro’s will run first.

1.30 pm – Lunch Break

2.30 – 3.15 pm approx – Awards Ceremony/prize giving

3.15 pm (Approx) – Farewells - Day ends early allowing those with flights etc to depart early.

If bad weather affects the racing we will have to amend the schedule as best as we can in order to get some results.
If the worst happens and rain stops play then we will position on qualifying times. If it clears up then we run Pros first. If we progress half way through the Pros and it starts to rain again, then we return to using qualifying times, no matter who has beaten who.
We really do not want to see any events dropped due to bad weather so if we all think positively then it will not rain!

Some skaters will be in this pub (a short walk from the campsite) on Thursday and Friday evening – if you intend to eat there it is best to phone ahead and book as it gets very busy in the evenings especially at weekends:

Miller & Carter Steakhouse (Chigwell)
Manor Road,
Abridge,
Romford,
RM4 1NH
