Bahne-Cadillac Slalomcross
April 12th – Rain Date April 13th
Paso Robles, California
Be a part of skateboarding history. This is the first race of it’s kind…a combination of dual slalom, dual giant slalom and two-man downhill. We’re calling it SLALOMCROSS.
The course will begin with each racer blasting out of his own start ramp into an eight cone stringer with seven foot spacing. As each racer exits their respective stinger it will be a hole shot to the first “pass through” gate, which will consist of one, circular 3.5’ tall x 18” diameter marker and a regulation slalom cone. Both racers must “pass through” these two markers. There will be adequate room for both racers to skate through the gate.
The course steepens and turns right after the first “PT” gate, a short straightaway follows. PT gates will take the racer from one side of the road to the other. The course then takes a ninety-degree turn to the left, followed by a short steep chute, there will be
3-4 PT gates in this section.
The steep chute exits into a slightly off-camber ninety-degree, right turn. Upon exiting this turn each racer will return to their color coded course. The cones in this slightly uphill section will be in the 7’ to 9’ feet apart, offset just a bit. As you crest the uphill section the course steeps once again and the cones are set in giant slalom fashion.
Midway through the GS section there will be a gap of 50’ to 60’ feet that will be void of cones. Each racer will need to decide whether to tuck this section or try and pump it with out the aid of cones. Then it’s back to 6 to 8 more cones set in GS fashion. The finish line will be 15’ to 20’ past the last cone.
Total length of the course will be almost 1100’. Approximately 60 cones. Practice times ranged from 44 to 55 seconds. The course surface is rated 6/7 on a scale of 10. Hay bales will be set in critical sections. You can view the hill on the experimental race forum here on SlalomSkateboarder.com.
Each racer will be given two qualifying runs. There will be very high importance placed on qualifying fast. Bracketing will be the typical 1-32, 2-31 set up. The higher qualifier in each heat will be given lane choice. In the head to head racing there will be no clock, first racer across the finish line wins. One heat per bracket, winner advances. No second run, no switching lanes.
Cone penalties:
Large markers on PT gates–If displaced from it’s circle or knocked over – DQ
Regular slalom cones, either type of gate –.2 second
Incidental contact in the PT section is allowable. Any contact used to create an advantage will result in a DQ. This isn’t roller derby.
Registration for the event will soon be available at http://www.bahneskateboards.com. You can also register via email: jack@bahneskateboards.com.
This is an open event. Prize money will be paid to 4th place. First place will be a minimum of $1,000. Entries are limited to the first 60 racers. Entry fee is $100.00.
Paypal entries accepted at oldskateguy@aol.com.

During the testing of the hill/course the following equipment was used:
Turner Fatboy - Indy Trucks - Turner Avila Wheels
Bahne Rocker with stretched wheelbase - Seismic 157mm front truck - Tracker Dart rear truck - Turner Avalon Wheels
The winner of the race will also receive the Barry Lowe Memorial Cup. Barry was the National Sales Manager at Kryptonics between 1987 and 1993, also known as slalom's "dark years". During this time Barry was able to convince Kryptonics to fund the few US slalom events that occured, such as the NSA race at Mt. Trashmore and Race Day on Kennedy Way in Morro Bay. He also was instrumental in running a couple of Kryptonics slalom ads in TWS during the same period.
Barry passed away a couple of years ago after receiving a bone marrow transplant. The operation was successful, however eight months later his weakened immune system was unable to fight off a severe case of pnuemonia.
Paul Dunn and I were friends and business associates of Barry. Paul is supplying the Barry Lowe Memorial Cup.

Jack, thank you for remembering Barry in this way. My experience of him, although much shorter and quite different, was no less positive. I first met Barry on a phone call to Kryptonics I made at someone else's suggestion. The upshot of the experience was that, if you called Barry and made it clear that you were into slalom racing, you'd get wheels out of it. We ended up talking quite a few times during the late-80s and early-90s, and I'll always remember him as super friendly and a stoked supported of slalom skateboarding. I still occasionally use the wheels he sent me way back then. In fact, that's some of them in my picture over there <<--- . It is unfortunate that Barry is not around to see this latest eposide in slalom's history, but rad that he's being remembered this way. Who knows? Maybe Barry knows what's going on anyway.

The Gordon clan, Eric Cole, Tom, Dave Baker and myself gathered at the Paso race site this afternoon. Eric and Tom helped me re-set the course and then we each took a few runs. It was the most fun I've had on a skateboard in years. This race is going to be epic. Walking back up the hill today I kept picturing Hackett just charging the hill.
Ick and Ninja Bearings have signed on as sponsors.

Hello All,
I'm off to Panama to compete in the First Annual Bocas Del Toro Slalom Skateboarding Championships. It's an event I'm sure to win...being the only entrant. The course will be set in an open-air basketball gym.
Keep those entries coming for the Bahne-Cadillac SlalomCross. You can always reach me by email at he address above. I'll be back in the office March 31st.

Asphalt Playground is donating a sweet 47" Gravity HyperCarve to "the biggest slam" of the Bahne-Cadillac SlalomCross. No fallen rider should go away empty handed.
If there are no big beefs, and let's hope there are not, the award will become the "rookie" award for the most promising rookie of the race.

Also,
Jack, thank you...the venue was superb, great hill, and the couse suited the hill very well, in my opinion. In fact, I thought the slalomcross concept worked exceptionally well at this venue which made for exciting racing. Plus it was so much fun just to run this course. Also, thank you Paso Robles Spa & Resort for hosting the venue, thanks to all of the support teams (Heidi, Michelle, Ed, and other that I have missed) and thanks to all the racers...boy did you guys make it exciting. Also, congrats to the final four: Chicken, Richy, Hackett and Hut

What a great event this past weekend. Thanks Jack and Stan – your attention to detail is amazing – trophies, product prizes, t-shirts, goodie bags, food vendors, great scenery . . . Wow! Thanks to all the racers, families and helpers who all did their part to make the event memorable –it was great to be a part of it.
Sooooo stoked the weather cooperated – a couple of times in the day we thought the rain was upon us – I held my breath and wiped the drops off my lens – and the show continued! Just watched the last reel I shot – got to relive all the final head to head action – in the comfort of my edit bay. Didn’t miss the wind – that’s for sure! Getting right to work on the video/dvd . . . Only wish I could have been in several places at once. This course was the most challenging ever from my perspective – had to opt for the 90% viewpoint thus sacrificing the finish line footage. If anyone has stills or video of the finish line view – would love to see!
Congrats to everyone -- especially Richy & Chicken -- making SSS proud!!
Ed Economasher -- you are too funny . . . Karen & Lisa – we don’t need no stinkin taxi . . . Charlie & “Mrs Ransom” – watch out for the snow! . . . Ick Stick Badlanders -- great hanging with you at the "Breakfast Club" . . . Mike & Sandy - Thanks for the ride – now on to the hot tub!
Cheers All – see you in San Fran?
By the way -- where is MDP? We miss him! Can't forget to mention those on the "injured" list - Cliff C., Dave H, John O, Bill W and Steve E -- your presence was missed -- hope you all heal up and come back soon.
And Happy (belated) BD to Chris Chaput and Zannah Hackett!!
I'll try to post some video grabs ASAP . . .
