How about $25? As for finalists tossing in extra cash- hey I'm all for it. That should bring out the real sandbaggers.

I met with Jim at Houghton Miflin Publishing today and talked about a poster- he'll have one ready tonight.

One thing I would really like to do is bring spectators to our event. After all....if we don't make an effort to bring spectators down to watch.....then we may as well have a race in the middle of nowhere.

I thought one idea would be to have regular sized helium ballons anouncing the race location and events. At Lunch the skaters could take 10 balloons each and go down the river and tie them to the backs of peoples lawn chairs(With their permission) along with some flyering. It's a group effort.

A balloon tied to the chair could be tied at eye level.

Bored people waiting for the fireworks might make the effort to wander on down.

The other option is to move the site to one of the underpasses closer to teh spectators. Using the underpasses that lead to the tunnels would be okay as there would be no chance of a spectator crossing our path...but realistically, that is also very unlikely given our current location.

Bringing the race to the spectators might be a lot of fun.

I remember lots of people crossing the bridge above Storrow. I got spit on twice. It actually felt good on that particular day.
The dudes under the bridge weren't sharing, so I forgot about them. I remember now.

I agree with your point. But I don't remember anyone besides friends and family that WATCHED the raceS. I do believe many people SAW a race or two before or after they crossed.

It'll probably rain anyway.

The crowd was perfect. I (personally) want to see more of hot Baltic chicks on the right and less of hot fatass mammas on the left.
Don't disregard those bridge walkers who stop by and watch the race. There were hundreds if not a thousand of those last year. John wants to move the finals closer to the fireworks so that more potential Fidelity's clients can see some tightass wigling from the bridge.

Fat mammas, weed smoking dudes, fire-work-watchin potential Fidelity cusomers or hot sorority chicks partying on the frat house roof next to the course.

Who would you like to see take an interest in slalom skateboarding?

huh?
Make it 14. How many did you see on Friday and Saturday?

There were at least 4 weed smoking dudes under the bridge in Boston who stuck there all day. That's besides the crowds on the roof, hundreds of passing fire-work-watchin potential Fidelity cusomers, hot chicks from the Baltic republics who didn't let Chaput win both times, fat-ass mammas on the grass (literally) on the left, bunch of kids playing on the other side of the hill, Policemen on and off the course, Victoria, CMC's parents and bro, and many many stray pedestians.

If you count Breck's 3-day crowd and compare it with the Boston's one-day crowd, Boston is going to win. It doens't matter that people didn't come there to watch the race. Thousands of race spectators (about 3-4-5 rows at a time) weren't there for the race in Trocadero. They were just passing by.

I'm gonna count only the 4 weed smoking dudes under the bridge. 4 is how many times greater then 0? I say 14. What say you?

I wanna come because it's a good tradition.

So, what will it be: one race for $100 or 5 races for $20.

Vlad, I'm coming to race and hang out and everyone else should come too. July 4th in Boston is like history in the making and should be experienced by everyone at some point. I've seen it though and in my neigborhood its a warzone at night. Better to get out of town and go see family. I'll be at the other races too.

Jim,

slalomers from as far as Virginia and maybe even Georgia are making a trip to your city just to skate and hang out, and you’re leaving because of crowds?

I like TK's plan. Start early, one good course, finish early ready to celebrate the 4th. Last year it was so hot by noon I was glad I had Red Sox tickets just to get out of the sun (I wasn't racing because I had run cones only once before the race). There will be lots of people down there but they will all be heading for the Hatch Shell down the river to grab a good spot to view fireworks. They won't linger to watch a race, especially if its getting later. The spot is closed off the whole day so if people want to keep riding they can. I plan on getting out of Dodge and heading north, I've seen the crowds on the 4th, its insane. Worth seeing once but I prefer setting off bottlerockets in a country backyard while drinking beer than dealing with a million people packed into a small park.

TK and Squire Gilmour,

Just a quick question and suggestion from a Monday morning quarterback: is Bryan Parsons going to make it? Or someone from the DC area? Perhaps they'd be kind enough to bring along Brian's bracket board?

That would be so much nicer than Gilmour and Sandy drawing with chalk in the middle of the road! plus, it would avoid a really nasty slick spot on the asphalt for later courses.

I say we start early before the heat.set up at 8am racing by 9am. One course. Special Slalom bringing together TS, mid and GS style all in one course. Keep the format SIMPLE. Run it Like Hester did the first LA Costa. Top 1 through 16 qualifiers are the A pro. 17th through 32 is the B pro. Trying to run 2or3 events in a day is a recipe for a cluster#$%^. We should be done by 3pm so guys can either go home to their families if they have to or go have a shower and return for fireworks. Races I've been to have always taken 2x longer than expected. Keep the format simple and fun with good timing and a good course. As far as the crowd thing goes the people are there to see the fireworks and get a good seat. Waiting till 7 or 8 to run finals will result in lots of lookie loos crossing our course and getting in the way. Not worth it. TK

$(1)20 sounds good.

PlankkR will be a sponsor and will provide a prize - BOSTON edition Commi plank.

The format depends on the # of people. I vote for GS, Super G, 15 feet parallel and ISSA-rules pushstarts.

this is a "gilmour event" therefore isn't it appropriate that the entry fee be some complicated number like $21.73?

ewwwwww, thats gross Chris. Yes 20 seems good, It'll keep the cheep skates from whining and still give a little something for gas ,beer, and PVD parts. 20 it is.

Since this IS the 4th of JUly. Everyone feel free to Chime in about how you want the race run. Its OUR race after all. The Farm Race however will be run in a Total Dictatorship manner so save your breath for that one. Carry on.

I'm down for a free race. Whats the winner gonna get though??? The Eskimos used to offer their wives to friends who traveled and stayed in the igloo. This seems like a cool tradition. Does anyone have a wife or girlfriend they can offer up to the Champion???

PS , Sandy just had a baby so she is excluded this year.

The fee should probably be less than last year's. After all, Gilmour lives in Boston this summer and won't have to worry about gas money or hostel charges

[bitchy cheap realistic bastard]

The fee better not be over $20.00 tops.

[/bitchy cheap realistic bastard]

Actually that park thing can be whatever but the boston race better bee free or cheap. Not last year.

Hi Wesley,

I just remember how tired we were on the 4th after two days of skating and skating late at night the night before.

I think it was great... but we have more slalom after the 4th.

Also I want the 4th to go later this time so we could have the finals when people are around. Sunset is at 8:15 pm

They did pave a new road in teh Boston common and of course if people want to slalom there...go for it. But I would save it for the 4th.

John,

Of course I won't be there (damnit,) but I have a question. You say "no slalom on the 3rd." Why not? One of the most fun events last year was the night time slalom in the Commons.

Maybe if folks know in advance to anticipate a jam session they will make plans to be there Thursday instead of waiting til Friday morning? At least Chaput will know where to have the taxi to take him this year.

Just a thought.
