Nothing really happened today.

No slalom.
I'm hoping things will pick up in the future.

I saw a little silhouetto of a man (Scaramouche, scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?)

Day 2.

I cannot find my cones.

No thunderbolts. No lightning but still very, very frightening.

Luna looms.

I found my cones.
I also found "The Natural".

He will be making his debut at a future race and my prediction is that he will KICK YOUR ASS.
I'm pretty confident of this.

He already looks like he's been racing for a while and it was his FIRST TIME!

I however, suck.
Between my busted shoulder and recently missing appendix I'm out.

Luna is a vacation for me.

I am preparing for Luna by doing shots of Southern Comfort and watching "Oh Brother, Where art thou".
I'm also hoping that the weather will warm up so that I can sit on my front porch swatting fly's and wipe the sweat off my forhead and neck with my handkerchief while sipping disgustingly sweet tea.

And now the Stripers are in and once again I'm obsessed with catching as many f*cking fish as humanly possible.

i ran cones saturday night AND caught a mess of catfish this morning. it was groovy.

i run cones at least once a week and i'm still slower than troy.

There are maybe five or six people perusing this website who understand the colloquial and subtle nuance of a "mess" of catfish.

And for you who don't.....a "mess" is just slightly less than half a "shitload".
And, another thing... I happened to catch a mess of Weakfish this morning.

No cones yet though. I had some time after work today but of course the beautiful day we had turned to shit just about quitting time.

Ahh, Tom...if only I could...
Going under the knife tomorrow for a little knee surgery. (authroscopic [sp?] no big deal).

If it's not one damn thing it's another.
At least I'll have a few days off to hobble around and finish those ramps.
And in another couple of weeks my knee will be bionic. (meaning that it should work like it's supposed to as apposed to the swollen, painful, locked up thing it is now).
They can rebuild me.
They have the technology.
Slalom will happen, as it always does, about a week before a race.

L.I. Slalom is dead.
I don't care anymore (slightly dissenchanted with the slalom world), and "the natural" probably won't do it on his own.
Between work, hanging out with my boys, the skatepark, fishing,and the occasional surf session, there is no time for doing what I really dont want to do (work covers that).
As soon as I finish the ramps for The Farm I'm done.

Your love/hate relationship with slalom is very interesting. I would encourage you to delve more deeply into your feelings (if you have not already done so) to determine where the frusteration is rooted. Maybe some meditation or prayer can help you. I can refer you to a few places if you'd like.

OR, maybe you can just change your approach. Slalom doesn't have to be an obligation to anyone or to the acheivment of any particular goal. I have little time to slalom and for a short time I got really frusterated with the fact that my reality did not match up with my desires to be on a podium. The fact is I just can't practice enough to get there. So, I accept it and just try to enjoy every chance I get to skate and not focus on the competition. Maybe that can work for you.

I would just hate to see someone throw away such a joy as slalom without first learning to simply enjoy the activity before getting frusterated with not doing well in the competition world.

If you do end up bagging out, though, can I have all your slalom stuff? (that was a joke)

Well, if you are going to quit I better get my last runs in with you. I'm heading towards the south fork on Wednesday- and I plan to spend my birthday there- (no plans)

If you want to have a gimp race,,,,,yer on. But I won't spot you any cones.

You ride a piece of wood (or fiberglass over foam, or whatever) with wheels as fast as you can through little, itty-bitty cones.

Now, if you mean the appeal--that nobody understands what's attractive about the sport, well then maybe you have a point. But can't the same be said for throwing a ball into into a ring 10 feet off the ground (basketball), or hitting a ball with a racquet over a net (tennis), or rolling a heavy ball to knock down funny shaped sticks (bowling)??

Well, whatever it is, I like it. And I want more of it. Call it work, play, whatever. I find slalom a very orgasmic experience.

Giving up? Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Stop being so morose. Come to my house in CT the night of 7/3 and we'll ride up to Boston for 7/4. You can sleep in the beer cellar.

Slalom is a lot of work. The difference between basketball, bowling, and even park skateboarding is that you show up, and it's on. You won't have any trouble finding someone to shoot hoops with you nor will you ever show up to a skatepark and not have someone you know or just met hooting and hollering for you. Imagine if you could show up to to a spot in your town at any time on any day and there were 20 people already there skating cones. I can understand Troy completely. Skating by yourself is just not half as fun. Come out here and see us sometime Troy as the stoke is thick and there are plenty of dedicated rippers like Matt to keep you going. As a new guy to the slalom scene I can definitely say that the community out here has made it real easy to get excited about the sport. Hopefully some other skaters on LI will pop up and get Troy going again. Now who wants to race???!!!! Just don't get any on me when you have that orgasm Matt. Aim it at Joe.

Boys (and Girls), let me first say that my use of the word "orgasmic" DID NOT imply the expulsion of any bodily fluids. I am trying to keep this clean here.

Troy, if you are calling it quits just because you are lonely, then why didn't you just say so?? I mean you live on an island, right? I think that is a big part of the problem.
Maybe you should consider becoming a mainlander. Or maybe some of us can just come down and visit you.

Speaking of which....you know we here in Boston have heard all this CRAP about the Democratic National Convention and the road closings and the security, but the 4th of July is this weekend, and we have heard NOTHING, I mean NOTHING about securing a totally open harbor that fills with private boats and water craft for the fire works while tens of thousands amass on on the esplanade which is right on the the water. Hmmmmm....so nice of the Boston leaders to speak up on this one.

Anyway, I digress. Troy, don't quit. You'll miss it, then come back. Get frusterated again, then leave, etc, etc. You will get caught in that yo-yo effect and you will be even more miserable. Just stay. Be happy in the moment. Email people. Hold an outlaw race. Convince JG to move down there with you. If you quit you'll have to get rid of stuff. And you're an American, you're supposed to have lots of stuff. So, if for any reason you consider staying with slalom, let it be that it makes you more American because it is an opportunity to acquire more stuff.

Troy I'm right there with ya! if it was not for the guys, I would never on my own, set a course, run it 20 times and push myself past my comfort level, or get any better. On my own, that would seem like hardwork and practice, but when we are all together, It's so much fun, it does'nt seem like practice. I've always enjoyed longboarding, the carve and flow early in the morning, or after work, and I enjoy being alone, but for me slalom is just like skiing or snowboarding, it's much better when you share your runs with others. I understand how busy we all get, but make some time and come skate with us.

I'm hearing you now. I guess I agree somewhat with what you say. I like to just be able to start doing whatever it is I'm doing without setup too. I will admit that that particular part of slalom is a bit annoying most of the time. That is why we need some of the more patient folks out there to start posting their canned courses. I just want a diagram where I can quickly deciophor the course, drop the d*mn cones, mark em and go.
What we really need is self marking cones. Now that would be VERY helpful.

So that explains why you are having problems with traction early in the course. Please walk up alongside the course- stay at least 10 feet from the cones, and feel free to go very very very wide on the offsets.

You should focus on the cones and not fantasize while slaloming. You didn't have this problem until you started practicing with women.

Sounds like Troy needs a "slalom intervention".

A funny? Not even close, this is just plain sad. Troy has had some good showings, Gilmour lived in his basement and trained him for a summer. He could have been a contender, instead of a bum, which is what he is.

You'll see, he'll still show up at the Farm, mumble, not look anybody in the eye, making our wives and Mark McCree's daughter nervous. But that's what it's like with Troy. You take the good with the bad.

Wow, I don't really know you Troy but my gut says your worthy. I wish you peace.

Saw Troy this week. He scheduled a slalom race. He had hte ramps all set up at his house--- they are killer.

But his race format was different. At most races we have parties afterwards. Except at Morro Boy '01 where there was a killer Pre-party. I liked that format since no one leaves right after the race and misses the party.

Troy also agreed that this was a good format.

So he arranged a massive party at Ms. L's (THE Hunts are her neighbors) in Southampton- replete with Filet mignon, open bar with Grey goose- and other top shelf liquor- tons of food- decorations lawn golf....etc...badmitton....pool, unfortunately we had so much fun at the party we ran out of time to race.

Can't wait for another one though.

Troy ......come to Chicago on the 24th...we'll figure a way to pick you up at the airport or rail.....

Christian, I am thinking of packing some beer (but not cheap beer like Budweiser) to chug on while I watch the rest of the race after my disqualification. Not that I am chosing to get disqualified. But my lack of practice will certainly show through, I'm afraid.

You are free to join me if you too get disqualified. We can throw empty cans at people.

I'll join you guys in that one Matt. I however will be drinking either Pabst Blue Ribbon, Miller High Life, or if I qualify, I'll upgrade to Bud. I stopped by the Kirby residence last evening on the way to Rye Airfield and TK was tight lipped on what the course will look like. I then went to Rye and saw a kid break his nose and cut his lip bad enough to definitely need stitches on the mini-ramp. Not what I needed to see before this weekend. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

Troy gets 2nd in vintage race- right behind Mollica- takes out many hopefuls.


He built special electromagnets into the ramp he activated for his run. There is no rule against this.
