There will be a party for all on Saturday evening (lets make our own Savage Club)

Ok, and I'd like to see some US skaters over there too.

I say that we get a fund going on the site here to get Richy Carrasco(to race) and Maria Carrasco(to film) over to this race.

If they make a PayPal account up, they've got my donation.

Great to see that the Swiss organizers are so early in announcing their event!

I've written it into my calendar already!

I hope many others racers (be it American, European, Asian, or South American!) will come as well, making it even more interesting.

A race this summer in Switzerland...sounds great. Count me in and I now have it on my calendar also, and I hope there will be other domestic skaters that will also make the journey overseas 'cause I'd hate to see the slowest skater on the FCR tour be the only representative from the US.

Hi Chris,

I am very interested in making at least one trip over to race in Europe this year. Could you describe the courses as compared to the Morro Bay course? Are average cone distances like 4ft apart or somewhere closer to 6ft? Is altitude a factor? What would be an ideal board setup for the course? Any information you could provide will help greatly.

thanks,

Michael

Jani and Hans, Mr. Dong, JG, Howard Gordon, Attila, Carrascos (several?).....any one else? Sharon?
Ok a little early, but it would be cool to have a line up of the stars in the next plea for sponsors..

Wow! Paolo Gatti and Luca Giammarco! So Gianluca has pulled them in their ears. The continuation of the european slalom revival is alive & well.

Is it possible to contact Gatti and Luca to confirm for sure that they will be there and also to make them aware of the USA racing schedule for this year? Gatti speaks english well.

I do not have their email, but I am very sure that they will be there. It really looks like Grüningen will be the place to be in June! The Youth Organisation is really promoting it well this time, so there will be spectators too.

I have a couple of questions to the organizers of this race. I've read the courses' description, but it would be wonderfull if you can confirm that here.

Some of us in the US are afraid that this event will be similar to Morro Bay 2001- a longboard slalom rather then traditional slalom. Because modern Swiss slalomers favor long boards, we’re worried that the courses are going to be set to accommodate the "new" slalom style rather then the classic slalom style. After all, a very famous Swiss slalomer, Daniel Ridoli, left after his first attempt last year (possibly because cone distances were extremely large). And he was one of the best slalomers in the world not long ago. When you call 2003 race a TS, do you mean 2003 standards or 1990s Swiss standards? How will it differ from the race last year? (What were the distances last year and please confirm 1.7 m to 2 m in TS if it's so).

Is there a way to make sure that all the registered Italian racers are coming or at least have expressed an interest? Can Paul Gatti and Giammarco Luca be personally contacted to confirm their knowledge of the race and their intent to come (not through a third party)?

We want to come, but we want to make sure it’s not going to be another longboarder’s race.
I did go overboard in my questions, just tell me it ain't so, and you'll make more then one person happy.

Thank you,
Vlad (on behalf of self and other interested US parties).

Hey Vlad,

the problem last year was that the swiss were not prepared for the course Chris Linford set. If his course would have been the competition course 75 percent of the racers would not have made the course at all.
So what will be done this year are 2 courses, one tight and one semi-tight like at the tunnel race. You can ask the english guys and they will confirm that sundays course was tight! Count on 1,70 - 2 meters on saturday in Grueningen.

As for the italians.I don´´t know. They have registered so I think they will show up.
I think if you would register only if it is sure that they will come would be a little lame. Believe me that there will be enough competition for you. At least I will fill you up with enough beer the evening before the race to suck out the strength of your legs....hehe. a little fun on the side.

Thank you Chris. Let’s hope the format is as promised and is not voted off the last minute and substituted with longboard slalom.
Beer drinking is a good sport!

There is a format in written words and the organizers are swiss and have cooperation with me and Joe, you know what our backgrounds are and what swiss precision means. That should be enough. Besides swiss cheese an chocolate. see you.Prost!

Chris,
The spacing of 1.7 to 2.0 meters(5.5 to 6.5 feet) sounds like it is to be quite a bit tighter than what this race has been in the recent past.

And it seems to go against what Swiss slalom board makers have been building in the recent past. Do any of the European board builder offer decks with wheelbases to handle this spacing? I always thought that Airflow and Indiana decks were longboard decks.

Course discription: http://www.pscontest.ch/eventse.htm

Can you confirm that this TS race will have no spacing greater than 6.5ft?

Do you ever get to skate at this location and have you tried a course here with this spacing?

From the video clip provided above by Yoyo, that clip is not even close. That must be the GS course?

Glenn,
you are exactly right, the race this year will be different. It will have a true tight slalom on Saturday with the course as described on the website (please don´t kill me if you find some cones spaced 7.2 feet instead of 6.5) it will be a true technical tight course. I was responsible for the text regarding the course and I am there to assure a real tight course on Saturday. I will most likely not set it, but I will be envolved in the layout for sure.
Sundays course will be a lot wider but still more challenging than last year. The organizers are convinced that true progression can only come with challenging courses and the swiss are practicing, believe me.
Your are also right that most of the boards are longboards, but they are working on new designs. As always they want to make perfect designs, so the boards are well tested.

Last year I skated on the course you see in the video. The course was set by Chris Linford and it was alot tighter than it looks in the video. The clip is filmed with a mega fisheye, so cone distances look a lot larger than in reality. It was a tight, for sure not a GS. The guys skating are Chris Linford and Martin Drayton, both have incredible tight slalom abilities, so the course looks a lot easier than it actually was.
The course you see was NOT used in the actual race on Sunday because 75% of the racers would not have made it to the 10th cone. So this year will be a two day affair, two races, two different courses, one tight, one larger for everyone. You will see!

Hi Chris- In the last decade not many Americans have made the trip to Europe to compete and that is a shame.

I would like to offer some advice to help change this.

If you were to publish the course layout I think many more Americans would consider making the trip.

I also hope that doing so might encourage American organizers to do the same for others traveling.
(it would help to reduce hte amount of gear carried)

I do not run English slalom nor do I have the gear for it- lest I tear an old soft s-camber from Bill Tways cold dead fingers.

So I am concerned to see what the minimum spacing will be measured center on center. If the course is 5.5 between the cones it is far easier for me than 5.5 on center. That being said- it is likely that there will be more UK skaters attending than USA skaters so the course should likely be set for the majority.

Also I noticed the hill does not have much pitch.

How fast would you roll at the bottom if you started with say 3 pushes and went straight the length of the course?

Can we have shot of a 608 bearing on the surface to show the surface quality?

I am just curious if the slalom hill will be anything like Hombrechtikon's amazing hill- or if the pitch will be much less.

Posted: Fri Apr 11, 2003 6:58 pm
by Chris Eggers
John,

first of all we will not publish any course in advance, because it takes away some tension. It should be some kind of surprise, don´t you think?

Regarding the pitch: it is not much, you will have to pump. Hard.

If you take 3 hard pushes on top you will be too fast to step off and run it out at the bottom though.
I will maybe go to Switzerland a few weeks befor the race if I find the time and give a short report again.

It will not be english slalom.

Like I said before something close to the Tunnel race, ask Sharon.

I will ask Jadranko for a surface photo with a bearing.

As for all the US skaters making the trip. it will be so cool to have you here, but you know, you´ll have to be able to adapt on a short notice to every course.

I can assure you, if the weather turns out as good as the years before and everything goes according to the plan of the organizers, it will be a great weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Chris

I signed up and will get there. Anyone know any particularly good airfare deals?

I'm sorry to ask what it will be like- course wise but I just want to make sure I have an accurate idea of what to expect so I can bring what is needed.

Wesley Tucker published a course for the Folly Beach course and I was able to use the board I had planned- this greatly simplified what I had to carry.

Vlad, if you only find a flight to a German destination which is cheaper (could be, because flights to Switzerland are expensive, I don´t know why) we could arrange a meeting and take you with us. I will maybe drive down on the Wednesday before the race because it is a holiday here and I will take the Friday off of work.

Yes Chris -- it is confirmed -- we have plane tickets!! Decided that the new car could wait and we are applying the "down payment" to this trip instead . . . Also treating it as a belated wedding anniversary trip of sorts too.

We are both so looking forward to this trip and racing with all of you. Well actually, Richy "Brown Bomber" will be racing and of course, I will be shooting video . . .

Our journey will start in London and we will race at Brands Hatch. Later in the week, we are planning to hop the EasyJet to Zurich for the rest of our trip and of course the weekend of racing. Any tips on lodging in Switzerland? Now that I have the airfare arranged, it's time to iron out all the other details. Any info about local attractions we should consider would be great too. We've never been to Switzerland before so can't wait!

Hi Maria and Richie,

there will be info on lodging available on the website http://www.pscontest.ch in a few days.

Attractions on the way? Wow. There are a lot!
What are you looking for? Some sightseeing? Americans usually look for old stuff like buildings and stuff. Do you like that too? You should defenitely check out Zurich City and the lake, it is beautiful.
You could also check out Engelberg, it has a glacier you can take a gondola up to.

There is a lot. I suggest buying a visitor guide for the long flight.

See you soon, and ask us whatever you consider important.

In the news:

There is a advertisement film for the race which will be shown on national TV in Switzerland the week before the race.
You find it in the German part of the site http://www.pscontest.ch at "werbespot". Windoze media player needed.

Also in the News:

Tickets for the Party can be purchased in advance:

Tommy Thompson, Wetzikon

Time Out Sport Shop, Uster

Rollladen, Zuerich

There have been a lot of inquiries from people who want to race but think the registered racers, especially those from abroad are too advanced.
Some of them are Pro Skaters who race since more than 2 decades.

Therefor we decided to split into two categories Pro and Am. There will be two seperate races.

All those who are not too advanced are encouraged to come and compete and all are welcome!

Vorverkaufsstellen für die Party stehen fest. Ab dem 2. Juni sind die Tickets an folgenden stellen erhältlich:

Tommy Thompson, Wetzikon

Time Out, Sport Shop, Uster

Rollladen, Zürich

22.05.2003

Very good news about splitting skaters into two different course setttings (Pro and Am) for Tight slalom.

Is this also done for Giant slalom?

For giant slalom it is generally not as critical since it's easier to control speed. But that doesn't mean you can't have 2 different result lists afterwards. One for Pro's and one for Am's.

Will this event be considered an ISSA event this year?

Also will there be any pre race meetings and so forth? I just would loike to know what dates are best to book.

Posted: Thu May 29, 2003 4:29 pm
by Hans Koraeus
John, this year we will not be very strict on what will be considered ISSA competitions or not. If it's big enough and gather enough of people from different countries it will get a high status. For Greuningen this is not a problem.

If you are thinking about rules see the ISSA rules as general guidelines for organizers. The final rules for competitions are always up to the competition organizers to decide. If you are concerned about any specific thing here you must ask the origanizers. You can't take for granted that the ISSA guidelines will be followed to the point. If any confusion may occur that they have not thought of hopefully the ISSA guidelines will have an imoportant role though.

If you are thinking about future ISSA world ranking points this competition in Switzerland will probably be the one with the highest status for 2003 in Europe.

Once the ISSA World ranking is up and running for next year hopefully we wil be able to decide the status of competitions in advance.

Hi John.

I think we also wanted to split the Giant slalom into two catergories. It makes sense.
There will be racer meetings before the races start to once again state the rules and make sure everyone understands.

I will maybe be in Switzerland from the Thursday on because it is a holiday here and I have already taken the Friday off. It depends a little if Vlad wants to fly into Germany on the Friday.

Grueningen is very small, so there are not many hotels or bed and breakfasts, but I think it will not be a problem to find a place to stay, The Swiss are very hospitable people by the way, so maybe you may find a place at a skaters house. You come here everyday anyway? I will post info as soon as I have it myself.

Now:

there is one Hotel very close to Grueningen that offers deals to contest skaters:

Hotel Uster
http://www.hotelilluster.ch
about 10 km from Grueningen
The race site can be reached easily.
Prices:
Single 98 SFR
Double 128 SFR
Triple 165 SFR

includes breakfast

Reservations must be made in advance during the following 2-3 days, because there will be a major bicycle race in the area (Tour de Suisse) on the 23rd of June.

When making a reservation please mention the Slalom Skateboard Contest and the name RADOVANOVIC

Jadranko RADOVANOVIC can also make the reservation for you if you email him:

jadranko_r@bluewin.ch

There are also many small towns near Grueningen. If you use http://www.google.ch and search for the following town names and "HOTEL" you will find many adresses:

Hotel Rapperswil
Hotel Rüti
Hotel Uster
Hotel Zürich
Hotel Gossau
Hotel Wetzikon

Thanks again Chris. I have done some internet searches for Grueningen but there isn't much info out there (at least in English) . . . So I'm still not sure of some logistics- namely -- How far is Grueningen from Zurich by train?

We're flying into Zurich on EasyJet on Thursday early a.m. Thinking we will spend that day and night there and then venture closer to the race locale by Friday night. Probably train to Grueningen from Zurich and stay close Fri, Sat, Sun. Returning home from Zurich on Monday 10:55 a.m.

Yes you will not find many infos about Grüningen itself. It is a VERY small town/village.
It is not far from Zürich, about 33 minutes by car, I think about 50 minutes or less by public transport. The hotel guys in Zürich will be able to tell you how to get there I am sure. Swiss public transport is more perfect than car traffic in Zürich.

See the route at

if this does not work check http://www.map24.de and type in start: Zürich destination: Grüningen

As we are getting closer and closer to the race the organizing committee loaded another short film onto the website http://www.pscontest.ch to wet your appetite. It features great skaters like Sharon Sidlo, Jani Söderhäll, Gianluca Ferrero, Martin Siegrist, the new born Pro Edwin Brokman and many others at the Tunnel race and a few bonus scenes and chrashes. We're arriving Zurich Tuesday morning, and will travel to Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland for 3 nights (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) before travelling to Gruningen, hopefully staying at Hotel Illuster in Uster for Friday and Saturday nights.

If anyone knows of any slalom practice sessions during Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday in the Interlaken region, please let us know. Otherwise, can we find a practice session in Gruningen during Friday ?

Ahh, I hate when I miss out on nice slalom films. The film on the site is streamed somehow so I can't see it properly. I guess you have to have a broadband connection or something to make that film show smoothly.

Why not letting people download the film instead? Then everybody could enjoy it.
