[FCR 2003] Breckenridge High Peaks Drifter 2003

Post by Gary Fluitt » Thu Feb 20, 2003 9:03 pm

Here are the vitals on the Breckenridge race.

Image

Dates: Friday June 6, Sat. June 7, & Sunday June 8, 2003.
Events: Friday afternoon - SlalomCross
Saturday - Dual GS
Sunday - Dual TS
Evening festivities in Breck on Friday and Saturday.
The Friday event will be similar to the Bahne Slalom Cross. The race starts at 2 PM. Reason for the late start is to give Friday travelers a chance to fly in and make it to the event. Additionally the Friday event is hoped to make the evening news in Denver/Front Range and draw a crowd for Saturday and Sunday.

Friday and Saturday events are at Beaver Run Resort This resort is slope side on the ski mountain. The resort was chosen for the race site because of the excellent roadway, the venue, and the willingness of resort management to anchor the event on site. The resort will be offering very affordable lodging packages on site.

The Sunday event is back down town in the center of Breckenridge on Washington and Main. The race will be similar to last year although a bit more tight, and more gates.

In all races a foot drag stop will be required. Do NOT come expecting a nice gentle run out. The foot drag stop is totally doable. Talk to anyone who raced last year, with the exception of Sandy Kirby. Don't ask her.

If you have any questions about the event please post me a private message and i will get back to you. More details on the way.
Gary

I like the poster! But Clint has too much class to be caught D-E-A-D on a Roe...

Gary -- awesome job of organizing and advance notice. Does this mean we can start booking travel? Had "too much fun" last year -- can't wait to do it again!

Maria, yes you can be certain of the dates for this one. Hey if you see Evans, encourage him to drive it again this year. It nearly killed him last year. I need the handicap.

I've got a plane ticket and a ride to and from Breckenridge from Denver lined up.

Where are going to be the best places to stay?

Anyone want to share expenses for lodging during the contest near the race course(s)?

Best places to stay:

Beaver Run Resort - On course, 5 star. Hot tubs, pools, etc. $81

Fireside Inn - Private rooms and dormatory rooms. Cool youth hostel environment with friendly hosts. Talk to Niki. 10% off in you stay 3 days. 2 blocks from the TS site.

Discover Resort. I don't know anything about this place but the guy called me and said he give skaters a great deal.

Also try Breckenridge Resort Chamber central reservations. See gobreck.com

Maybe Adam T. should combine all these?

<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images ... _thumb.jpg" width="150" height="277" align="right">Glenn - good one, Clint packin' a Pistol...har har.

I rode the hills we're racing on last Friday. Gesmer drove and counted turns, checked speed, etc.

SlalomCross/GS hill;<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images ... _upper.jpg" width="453" height="146" align="right">
I would estimate 50 cones for the GS, gates ranging from 7' to 20', using lots of roadway. More importantly there will be some gates-at-speed toward the bottom. This will be a lot like La Costa or Tahoe was last year. Wide open loose courses like La Costa are fine but this course will require more skill as it is not a straight road. There is a big left hand turn so it will be a little more technical. I am oppossed to early gates that scrub speed, so you wont see any of that, but the curve could be tricky.
I bombed this hill from the top with 4 hard kicks (more than ramp-start speed) using a 36" Roe Bonita and 3DM Avilas with Ceramic bearings. I topped out at 25 mph. There was a slight head win. La Costa GS was 18 - 21 mph last year and everyone was calling that “super fast”. It'll be something like that for both the GS and and SlalomCross. My point is, don’t stress about the speed. SF Gravityfest was probably faster.

Your foot wear selection may be critical. This is a foot drag stop affair. This would be a good time to sign that footwear contract. Beau?

Tight Slalom
The words “tight slalom” conjure up controversy. What is tight slalom? Ugh, there is a forum for that, go there. Expect a 50 - 60 cone course. Nothing sooo tight it can't be run, but we're trying to make a minor distinction from the oh so amorphous "Hybrid" term. If I can get this hill closed for a few hours this week I will try to set the course and report back, but that's sort of unlikely. I've got a job I occaisionally attend to. It will be something like Catalina, which incidentally was the "most loved" course of last season according to my scientific poll.
<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images/breck_ts_sm.jpg" width="320" height="240" align="right">
The TS hill is not very fast. Do you have a flat land pump? You’ll need it for 1/2 the course.
This hill is also a foot drag stop. Chris Chaput will be leading a "foot drag clinic" for those Mongo style freaks out there that share his foot placement persuasion. Yes that includes you PD. freak. Teach your children well. Friends don't let friends push mongo.

Parties are set for Erik’s Downstairs on Friday, and Breck BBQ on Saturday. Beer sponsor is Odells.

<b> Tight Slalom Update</b>
The Town of Breck was cool enough to shut down our TS street for a couple hours last Friday so that we could put in our TS course ahead of time. This will allow me to sleep at night knowing we've got a good course set. Here it is.
<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images/breck_ts2.jpg">
The course starts out with some 5' 9" offsets. There is a bit of a drop in the hill after 10 cones or so, and we give you a breather with a few 8' offsets. Speed increases quickly.

<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images/Breck_ts.jpg" align=right> Eventually the course ambles into a left hand hip of about 12 cones.

In the last third of the course we break once to the left, and slowly add offsets as you head for the finish.
<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images/breck_ts3.jpg" align=right>

Total course length is 64 cones. I think the average distance is about 6'. There are some 5'+ gates, a lot of 6' gates, some longer offsets. Oh heck, just look at the pictures....

Pavement is about 3.5 (of 5) stars. A little rough through the intersection, but otherwise pretty good. In setting the course I ran a Roe Bottle Rocket with a 17 1/2" inner hole to inner hole wheel base, and 85/80 Avalons and they felt sticky enough. I ran the course about 3 times. So now you know as much as I do about the TS.

The GS course will be un-identical courses on a 180 degree left hand curve.
I was thinking we would do a staggered start with the outside lane starting downhill of the inside lane, but after skating the hill a couple of times (sans cones) with Barker, we decided to work on matching lane times, rather trying to duplicate courses around the curve.
<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images ... art_sm.jpg" align=left>This means you will start next to each other, and finish next to each other. We'll set the lanes so that they are within a half second of each other for timing.

<img src="http://www.asphaltplayground.com/images ... .JPG">This also means the inside lane will be slightly more technical than the outside lane. Something for everybody.

SlalomCross will use some of the same gates as the Dual GS. But the curve will be sculpted for the common "pass through" gates.

that's all for now.
