Slalom St Louis pics & comments!

Post by Cat Young » Thu May 31, 2007 11:44 pm

Thanks to Chainsaw & Seth for providing accomodations for all of us!

I never knew what a men's locker room smelled like--- now I do!

Chainsaw chauffeured us around the whole time--- thanks Chainsaw.
I tried to keep the back seat driving to a minimum!

Goad & his family were the consummate hosts. If they ever want to send their little Sasha (Princess Salsa!) to California--- I'll take her! She is one cool chick!

Jonathan Harms took Gumby & I to the Arch on Monday. We also got to skate a beautiful park by his house & a killer parking garage after dark. I know there is video somewhere. A good time was had by all!

Thank you Jonathan for taking care of everyone & also to the Goads & Chainsaw for putting on a great race.

Good to meet everyone--

Tod Oles, I didn't get to talk to him much, but he is an amazing skater & probably has done more in his lifetime than all of us put together!

Tom Mangelsdorf & Dave Larson--- what a couple of great guys!

Paul Graf made some killer trophies--- too bad I couldn't have brought one home!

Good to see the Byrds again. Lisa is the perfect mom! Sarah, remember----- there is NO crying in slalom. Just get pissed & use that to your advantage!

Bara's tough Detroit attitude doesn't fool anyone. He is a pussy cat! And.... if anyone needs entertainment at their next party, call Chris! He had us in stitches the whole time!

66 is just as smooth as silk.... what can I say?

I know why Eddy loves Gumby so much, he is an absolute joy to be around.

Gabe is a character! He makes some beautiful boards!
Frank is as nice as can be... I don't care what anyone says!
Clifford.... well.... that is one class act. He will give you the shirt off his back & if it doesn't fit, he'll get you another one! I love him! Thanks for getting everyone morning coffee!

Lavin is a riot! Thanks for giving us the peep show in the parking lot! I think Mary Goad got pictures!

Ben--- nice to finally meet you! You always had a big smile!

CFav & all the little Favs--- great family!

Keith tries to be all business, but we got him to crack a few smiles!

I took quite a few pics of everyone doing everything except racing! Sorry it took so long. Here is the link:

http://s189.photobucket.com/albums/z125 ... is%202007/

I'll be back to St Louis next year for sure! I love that town!

Thank you, to eveyone that made it to Slalom St. Louis 2007.

The Mississippi Crew - Clifton, The Byrds & Frank I was disappointed I didn't get to race Frank. We will meet in the starting box again my friend.

Keith - Thanks for being a St. Louis regular. Congrats on the 2nd Place. 1/100 of a sec. was too close.

Gumby "the lone Texan" - Congrats on 3rd place. I hope I can catch up with you some day.

Tom Manglesdorf - I hope to make it to you race soon too!

Bara - same as Ricks comment.

to the rest of the Daggers - Congrats JBH, Goad thanks for starting all this, Chainsaw thanks for keeping this running smooth. Ben, you keep on getting faster.

to anyone I forgot - thanks for showing up!!

Talk about going the extra mile. JBH et al got a weed burner to manually speed the drying process on the road. Tedious, manual labor, but they did it. 1st class operation all the way. Thanks guys!

Rain? Ain't no rain. Oh, wait, there was rain. We didn't get to finish the race today, but I think everyone still had fun. Damn, 100 cones IS a long way.

Everyone got one qualifying run, a few more got two before the sky opened up. Everyone scrambled to get themselves and their equipment out of it. There was no chance of continuing, so we called it off around 3:00 p.m. and gave out the HUGE amount of swag from our generous sponsors:

Abec11 (Powerballs, BigZigs, ZigZags)
Bennett Truks (two sets!)
CHIxILL (one--or was it two?--boards, other goodies)
Concrete Wave magazine (mags, stickers, banners)
Juice magazine (HEAVY box)
Khiro (dozens of items)
Pavel (foamcore Gunner!)
Pleasure Tool (those sought-after green ones)
Pocket Pistols (two decks, cool stickers)
Radikal trucks (wedges, gift certificate)
Seismic (trucks and wheels, T-shirt)*
SK8KINGS (hats, shirts, stickers)
Todd Schweinbold (Vans/O'gio/Alien Workshop rep)--deck, shirts, HOSOI backpack!

*Special thanks also to Dan Gesmer for graciously providing his race spreadsheet software, which is another nice form of sponsorship.

Ellen, thanks for the computer. Mary H. and Lisa B. (and 66 and Chainsaw), thanks for recording the times. Garrett and (darned if I can remember his daughters' and their friends' names), thanks for coneheading.

I'm sure I left out many others, but overall, thanks to everyone who came and helped make Slalom St. Louis so much fun. I didn't have time to take many action photos, but my photos are online at http://sports.webshots.com/album/559187 ... ost=sports (if that doesn't work, try http://community.webshots.com/user/harmsjb and click on the Slalom St. Louis 2007 album.

I just got back in from the St. Louis weekend. Even though it rained midway thru the second qualifying run in TS today I had a great time. Everybody hold a glass high and toast big this weekend for the Dagger crew for throwing a great race weekend. Thank you folks for all your efforts!

Midwest was well represented at the event and and it was good to see 4 of the 9 top positions in Saturday's race went to the CHIxILL crew; Hollien, Oles, Favero, Lavin. Gumby, way to represent the Texas crew and congrats on your trophy today - you're smooth as glass man.

Eddy & Zack--- We miss you!

It rained all night long! We'll see if we can get the road dry enough to race--- I think we can pull it off if Mother Nature cooperates.

More later.

Well I made it as far as the airport and was caught in a freak rainstorm. The water was knee deep. My fligt was cancelled. I got a hold of Zak in Houston, same problem. Spoke to Gumby and Cat both are in St Louis they also have rain there, but are STOKED to be around some of the coolest people in our sport. Your Amigo Eddy The SOAKED Texas Outlaw/Pavel Skates.

I'll see you all at worlds, I'm moving to North Carolina in September!!!

Unless of course I decide to max out the credit cards and come up and sleep on chainsaw's floor... hmmmm.... still an option.

I can't get in touch with my cousins and they're supposed to come to the race, so if you see a bunch of curly-haired girls with my smile, say hello!

Hey guys...

I'm really sorry, but I just can't make it this year. The budget is tight and gas prices are just redonk...

I tried finding some folks to ride with, and my sister was going to go up to visit family and I would have only had to drive up to where the Oxford skatepark is... but gas prices and the IRS and everything... it just isn't happening for me, and I'm sick about it.

Ya'll have a safe race- I'll see you all again soon.

JBH- take it easy on 'em. ;)

FREE PLACE TO STAY!!!

I talked to Jeff "Chainsaw" McCullar this weekend, and he asked me to tell everyone that he has room for several more people at his house. He lives with a friend and has at least four couches and plenty of floor space.

So if money's tight, skip the chain hotels and consider a night or two at a "Hotel Chain(saw)." PM me for details, or call me at (314) 497-4366.

LATEST INFO--NOTE 100-CONE RACE ON SUNDAY!!!

THE COURSES: As in previous years, they're gonna be "slalom," with courses varying from 40 to 100 cones. Push start only.

FRIDAY, MAY 25, we plan an afternoon/evening outlaw session at "Spot 2," a slightly steeper hill at the other end of the park. Single lane, no timer, just for fun.

SATURDAY, MAY 26, we plan a single-lane jam at "Spot 1," the same hill as previous years. Course will be a hybrid, with spacing anywhere from 6 feet to 20 feet, emphasizing speed and fun--makeable for newbies, challenging for experts to go fast on. Take as many runs as you want; fastest time wins.

Note: This year will be a little weird at first, because there are huge piles of wood chips on the road at the top, left over from several severe storms this winter and spring. The push start will be next to the piles, but we'll make sure it's blown and/or swept clean. Nothing to worry about, just a little odd-looking.

SUNDAY, MAY 27, we plan a dual-lane 100-cone race at "Spot 3," a hill at the opposite end of the park. Cones will be set straight (no offsets) but will follow the natural curves of the road, which bends right, then left, then back right again. Cone spacing will vary from about 6 feet at the start to about 7 feet at the end. You WILL wiggle!!!

RACE LOCATION: Tower Grove Park in south St. Louis. Friday's fun session will be on a slightly steeper hill with a mild left-hand bend at the top. Saturday's single-lane hybrid will be on the same hill as in past years, an S-shaped street with a mellow slope but plenty of speed.

SURFACE: EXCELLENT asphalt, good runout at the bottom--little or no footbraking required. The streets are very slightly crowned and not particularly steep, but you won't be hurtin' for speed.

1st place: $200.00
2nd place: $100.00
3rd place: $50.00

Custom trophies to top 3 finishers. Swag from ABEC11, Pavel, Pocket Pistols, plus several others in the works.

Cat, I am getting an hotel room for the stay. Maxx, my son, will be with me - you're welcome to crash with us if you want.

Maxx doesn't bite and he's well behaved....

I need a place to crash.
Looking forward to coming out. After this weekend at Luna I'm ready to race again.

St. Louie. Memorial Day weekend

Post by Cat Young » Thu Apr 19, 2007 8:51 pm

The only ticket I could get was in on Thursday, May 24th @10:38 pm & out on Tuesday May 29th 12:55 pm---- don't have an airport ride lined up yet.

Right now, I have a place to stay Friday & Saturday only.

Can anyone help a sista out? I'll buy the beer! (oh crap, maybe I shouldn't have said that)
Do they still sell Lucky Lager for $3.99 a case?

Muchos Gracias!

Potential ISSA status for the Slalom St Louis

Post by Pat Chewning » Wed Apr 18, 2007 6:34 am

Just want to let you know that Harms has started the ISSA sanction application process and the status will most likely be BASIC. (Because the deadline for PRIME status has passed, without and ISSA application being submitted.)

But from the comments above, it looks like the final status is not much concern....
