ISSA Logo - time to update it?

Post by Marcus Rietema » Mon Dec 22, 2008 8:03 am

Is there an official ISSA Logo? I haven't been able to find one here on the site. If there isn't one we should ask people to submit ideas. We need to develop the ISSA brand identity and a proper logo is the first step.

Marcus,

This is the ISSA's logo dating back at least until 1995:

Image

The only time I used it was as a background graphic on the 2008 Rules layout.

Any alteration, improvement, change or direction the members want to go is more than doable.

I like the "SLALOM" logo with the cones and the virtual wheel-tracks going thru them.

The slalom logo was made for the magazine. When Adam Trahan created this site, he suggested we'd use it also for the online version - which he intended as an online magazine.

So........there is a lot of talented people in the slalomworld....why not start a comp concerning the logo? (if it has to be changed)

I agree with Pat, and Hopefully Adam will let us use it as "the logo".

Neither the "Slalom" logo or the "ISSA" logo are effective in my opinion.

The "Slalom" logo doesn't say "ISSA" or most importantly "International Skateboard Slalom Association" anywhere. It is completely generic and does nothing to brand the association.

The "ISSA" logo is better since it at least is tied to the association with the letters "ISSA" but once again does nothing to let people outside the sport know what the acronym "ISSA" stands for.

My suggestion is that we create a logo that includes the acronym "ISSA", the words "International Slalom Skateboard Association" and possibly a silhouetted slalom skater in action with cone(s).

Here are some examples of logos that use silhouetted skaters to get their message across. Both of these logos tell a story.

I think a contest to develop a new logo would be great. Suggestions?

Thank you Robert! I really liked the logo you guys created for the 2008 World's featuring "Mika". Would you guys be willing to create something along those lines for the ISSA?

I do a lot of work like this - so much that time is an issue...but I'll try to crank a few out as roughs or comps to use as a starting point. Don't hang me if I can't get to it though! :-)

Pierre Gravel is someone I'd highly recommend for this type of thing too - at least on our side of the pond.

What do you think of this? Has to be polished, just a try.
I think it's up to date since the model is Dominik from the Worlds in Gothenburg...

Yes.

A skateboarding silhouette.

No one's done that before.

While we're at it, why not change the name to IGSA "Lite"?

What - did you eat a "mean" pill today or something? At least people are putting stuff out there to be considered. How about "great to have you submitting some work, keep those submissions coming".

**NOTE*** Just saw Marcus' post...exactly!

Nice job Antonio!

I know a lot of people are just too nice to say it, but I'm not.
Wesley, if you don't have anything constructive to say pertaining to the task at hand, shut up.
Others may have great ideas or something to submit, but with idiotic comments like the one above, they may not want to submit anything for fear of being ridiculed.
How do you think this is constructive?

I asked Maggie, my co-worker, and a non-skater, what she thought of the logo... if it was something that would catch her eye. She said it was nice, but would be cool if the skater was turning around the letters.... as if the letters were somehow cones.

I thought this was a great idea! Something to think about.

I am loathe to get into internet keyboard battles - but that was uncalled for for sure.

Antonio said, "Has to be polished, just a try". Wes, that's why I asked if you took a mean pill - I think in your profession you know better. An artist starts with thumbnail sketches, they are presented and people brainstorm and make suggestions, then maybe a rough is submitted and the process repeats, then a comp, then a final design. Everyone has bad days - hopefully this was just one of yours.

Marcus,

I still have the official ISSA logo stamp, if you'd ever need that one. I guess it's an ISSA object that should be transferred from president to president (along with the presidential envelope in the drawer).
The stamp has this look (note image is slightly cut on this one:)
Image

I used it for official invitations to the East Block countries back in the 90's. It may still be needed if we want to provide "official" documents to help Russians to obtain visas.

I'm all for a new logo. It should remain a logo though, so not too big, not too decorative, more stylized. We need something that looks good even in very small size.

My idea is something a little more direct, a little '60s retro and colorful. Something about this makes me think of Jan & Dean, Val Surf and the temperature outside is 95 degrees:

Then, the abbreviated version:

That's killer Rick. I think that strainght on shot of Dave, leaning at that impossible angle shows the "speed" or "torque" more than some of the other shots above.

What about Rick's Pirnak and Robo's Julie as bookends on an ISSA in the middle? I like Rick's shading on Dave, could you do the same to Julie?

Donald,

I'll be deciding this in addition to making the decisions on which contests get which standings and naming all the babies born to slalom skateboarders this year. I don't like how things went in 2008, so this year I'm taking over. Infact if all further submissions could be labeled JISSA for Joe I's Slalom Skateboard Association, I'd be most greatful.
