Chris, I remember Jani and me doing this for the "Olympic Adventure Games" in the pyrenees. It was a big success and actually an old idea we had used already in 1988 on the European Championships in Prag. We had done this little A5 (Slalom! size) zine with pictures and info of each skater in the Swedish skateboard team. Guess what team was the most popular among the kids. Even I got to write autographs. And I can tell you that doesn't happen every day.ISSA did something like this in issue 18. While not intended as trading cards they were "cards" of the top European and US racers racing in a major race in 93 (Pyrenean Adventure Games?).

I think a "program" would be a really good idea at races;
*maybe a little bit about slalom racing(history, etc)
*a list of competitors with a little bit about each of them...perhaps with a picture
*a description of the various events taking place at the race
*a schedule of the events taking place(yeah right)
*and probably the most important, a page of thanks to the sponsors.
////////////////////////
I think these would be a good collectable/souvenir item...you could get fellow competitors to sign it(if you are into that sort of thing)
as far as "trading cards/photos, I am not into collecting pictures/signatures of dudes.
not that there's anything wrong with that...

Vlad sent me JG's Slalom! mags for additional research for http://www.slalomskateboarder.com I had a little stack but JG's is almost complete.
Chris, the issue you speak of is in there. All the racers had autographed it and made comment, unreal. I got nearly $500 for it on eBay!

Having a half sheet booklet of who's who at the races is a great idea. Places for notes, times, all pertanant info could be placed in this booklet. Good for the racer and spectator. It's a tough thing to do to organize a race but this booklet should almost be mandatory for big races.
p.s. no worries JG, your little stack of Slalom! is safe.

I'm encouraged by the positive response (yes the picture is tongue in cheek, but the idea behind the picture is not) I really think it would promote spectator participation (cheering on your favorite racer, autographs, just being able to tell "who is who"?).

ISSA did something like this in issue 18. While not intended as trading cards they were "cards" of the top European and US racers racing in a major race in 93 (Pyrenean Adventure Games?). It was sorta cool because all these years later when I found Slalom Magazine about 3 years ago (thanks to Gilmour) it helped me figure out who was who, who were all these people JG was ranting about.
These would be cool. But who is going to print them? If anything the race organizer (idealy) should. They really don't need to be fancy color photos either. A simple bio sheet with race results and such to hand out at races (photocopies). I had proposed somehting like this at Turner after Morro Bay....but well you all know about me and Turner. So the idea is on the market.
I think having hand-outs for races to spectators is somethign we have missed. Something as simple as a photocopy 8.5x11" with facts about slalom racing, explaination of slalom strategies, top contendors to watch in the given event, additional online info, etc....
having built 2 websites with team sections and trying to get photos/info from those team guys....it is an uphill battle...but worth it. We got alot of comments on the "team" section on the Turner Downhill site last season about how it was nice to get to know the riders and see what they are riding, etc.

Would it help promote the sport?
