MEZE SLALOM - April 3, 4, 5 2010 - Mèze (34, FRANCE)

Post by Guillaume Saint-Criq » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:48 pm

I’m glad to announce to all of you the MEZE SLALOM event, which will take place the 3rd, 4th and 5th April 2010, at Meze, South France near Montpellier .
Image
Meze slalom will also be a stage of the French championship Slalom 2010.

The event will be co-organized by Cyclameze (a local shop of urban glides and of sale / rent / repair of cycles), the Bordeaux Longskate Club, and the city of Meze .

Race direction will be ensured by the team ConeRacing.com!

The first day will begin in the morning with a giant slalom on a 400 meters spot, on a moderate slope with good quality asphalt.
Image

Once the giant slalom over, we’ll move downtown to the central square (market place). After the lunch and the prize-giving, the afternoon will be dedicated to initiations and demonstrations ensured by our partners, as well as two contests: high jump and “limbo slide”.

The second and third days will be respectively dedicated to the tight slalom and the special slalom: the qualifications will begin in the morning, followed by the finals after a lunch break.
Both races should end near 3:30 pm and followed by the prize-giving: the participants will then get free-time (there s a lot of concrete skateparks in the area).
All the racers will be expected at 7 pm on Sundays (day 2) for dinner.

Tight and special slalom will take place on a flat spot, an asphalt of very good quality, just at the edge of the “Bassin de Thau” and near the Meze harbour.
Image
The event will be OPEN (ISSA pros and amateurs merged): the categories MEN, WOMEN and JUNIOR will be rewarded.

For the categories WOMAN and JUNIOR, independent events will be organized if there are more than 6 racers in each category.
Each participant will be authorized to compete in only one category.

For each discipline, each racer will have 2 runs of training (minimum) then two timed runs.
For the giant, the final classification will be made at the best of both runs.
For the tight and special slaloms, will be qualified for the final phases and fight in dual mode:
- the 8 (or 16) best timing for the MAN category
- the 4 (or 8) best timing for the WOMAN category (if independent event)
- the 4 (or 8) best timing for the JUNIOR category (if independent event)

A ISSA « prime » status will be asked.

Meze is located at 28km from Montpellier and 19km from Sete.
Image
Montpellier ’s access: ( http://www.ot-montpellier.fr/en/access/ )
- by car (2h drive from Marseille or Toulouse, 3h30 from Barcelona, 7h from Paris, 9h from Madrid, 12h from Amsterdam …)
- by train (3h from Paris , 1h from Marseille)
- by plane : International Airport Montpellier-Méditerranée (from Lyon, Paris , Nantes , Rennes , Frankfort-Hahn, Bristol , Leeds, London , Brussels , Madrid , Amsterdam , Copenhagen )
Shuttle from the airport to the city centre. A bus shuttle runs every day and very frequently.

No vehicle will be necessary once in Meze.

The price of the inscription is not fixed yet but will not exceed 40 euro: it will include AT LEAST the participation for three races, a meal a day (lunch day 1, day 3 and dinner day 2), and a racer bag.

The registration is free for the women.
The registration will also be offered to the 3 current European Champions (tight, special, giant)
.

We have lodging partner who will host racers for 16€/night (including breakfast)
We are working to get some money from partners and pay a part -or all- of that... and host all racers for free... but nothing sure for now

A tee-shirt of the event should be offered to each participant.
Trophies will be put back to 3 first ones of each discipline (and overall).

The number of available places is fixed to 50 for now.
While waiting for a web page, to register or for any question, contact me directly at scguillaume[AROBASE]yahoo.fr

Hoping to see the most of you!!!

Guillaume

there will be 4 cat :

categories

KID (men and women, aged 12 and under on Jan 2010 1st)

Both category will be rewarded on each discipline and overall.

UPDATE ON MEALS

In order to further improve the quality of the proposed event, we decided not to offer 3 meals (as originally planned) but 4 meals!

Will be included in the 35 euro entry, in addition to everything else:
  • - 3 lunches at noon
    • - Saturday: BBQ at the bottom of the giant spot(starter, hot sandwich, chips, cheese, dessert, drink)
      - Sunday (cold sandwich, chips, cheese, dessert, drink)
      - Monday (cold sandwich, chips, cheese, dessert, drink)
    - And always the meal at the restaurant Sunday evening
for dinner at restaurant (included in the registration!), here is the program : Starter + Main course + dessert + hot drink
  • 6 oysters or goat cheese salad
Mussels & french fries or grilled beef
    Iced nougat or chocolate "fondant"
    Coffee, tea...
Drinks are not included and remain the responsibility of each (beer 2€, jugs of wine 8€)
The restaurant ( "Le caquelon") is situated just on the tight and special spot

Here again, we are struggling to make you an upscale event ... Having regard to the registration fee and services provided, you can understand that we are not there to make money but to share with you our passion.
It hopes to convince the undecided to come!

Other surprises are still to be annouced

For accompanying persons (women, children, buddies):
We offer 2 packages
- Pack 3 MEALS ON RACE SITE 15 €
and/or
- RESTAU pack 15 €
Interested persons should inform us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Yesterday, we received a very bad news from regional institutions.

The Meze Slalom competition can’t take place the way it was announced.

At the last moment, the authorities require from us excessive medical means which we are incapable to supply, and thus forbid us to close the roads.

We are truly sorry about it, more than you could imagine...we had given a lot of work and had operated everything to offer you a quality event to enjoy.
We were very pleased to receive you in the best conditions, and the event was planned to be a success.

Even if there is still maybe 1% chance we will get the roads closure, we prefer to have this difficult decision now and not inform you on the last time.
The event is thus officially cancelled!

The 1% chance we finally get the roads will be fixed on Monday : our national federation president will call the local authorities and will try to find an arrangement.
If it succeeds, we will have the roads as planned and we will be able to race in the city of Mèze.
We are also trying to have one more day one the market place, in the heart of the city
Unfortunately all this crap already had some negative impacts on our organization.

However, we already engaged numerous expenses and some aspects of the organization don’t allow us to step forward for everything.
We already paid for food, tee-shirts, trophies, stickers, commercials …

So, some of us (most of us frenchies, indeed... all that planned to come still will be there) will be in Meze that weekend and some aspects of the event will take place in OUTLAW shape:
- We have for sure, Saturday afternoon, the market place of Meze : we’ll do some high jump contest (condition for us to get a part of the state money, money we need not to lose too much)
We may put some cones to show the slalom also
- Timed races will take place in outlaw shape the rest of the time (spot to be determined, starting ramps will be there if possible)
- We’ll go to Poussan skatepark and we’ll be able to organize an outlaw park slalom

All of this will be free for every racer and the lunches for the 3 days will be offered. All the racers that were registered will get a free tee-shirt of Meze Slalom.
All the gifts we received from our sponsors will be given such as the trophies.

Sunday’s dinner at the restaurant has been cancelled.

Obviously, we’ll understand that those who wish and can cancel do so.
Keep us in touch and don’t hesitate to contact me if you need help with cancelation or any further information.
Those that have already booked and paid but who are not willing to attend the event anyway, let us know and we’ll make our best to find the right solution.

I can assure you of our deepest disappointment regarding the situation.

We will be at Meze that week-end and we will make our best to offer the attendees a friendly skateboarding weekend, but aside from the official frame.

Once again we are very sorry and we’re hoping nobody got hurt in the process.
Please, keep us in touch.

We hope you’ll understand.

This is really bad news. F*****g politics. This is providing young people with healthy leisure alternatives, for god sake! and with an international angle! F***k them.

Guillaume: I know how you feel. I'm still waiting to be refunded 2400 euros from Madrid city council that I paid as a "guarantee" for "damages" done by slalom riders in the f*****g tarmac in our spanish championship. And this was in May 2009!. We also got the permit after having asked for it 3 months in advanced, just 48h before and they asked for 3000 euros in fees. I had to come back from Paris (where I was working) and spend 48h negotiating with assholes in the city hall (and not working) to finally settle for 200 euros in fees. Then, they spend the money in f****g outrageous things that have no impact whatsoever in young people leisure and sports activities. This tells me we should get organized and stronger!!!!

Keep it up, Gulillaume!

Thank you for your support Ricardo!
I was (and i am still) so disapointed!
As you said, F##K politics!
They were asking me for an helicopter landing zone!
INCREDIBLE!

But we will make it better OUTLAW!
We already found a spot, just near the city, maybe better than official spot...
And where no-one will go upset us!

And yes, we have to get organized!
I am really motivated... this crap just motivate me more... and i will learn from this issue...

My plan is, just after Meze event : i will build a French Skateboard Slalom Association, to unite all french slalomers under the same banneer
Goal for FSSA will be to help organizing (and organise itself) events

See you

/Guillaume

As i just said:

we 've already found another spot, nice slope to make it outlaw.
Asphalt is very good and nobody will go upset us there

We also found a supermarket parking as a 2nd spot. it is flat but there is a covered palce in case of rain.

The event will be there !

official part will be only the high jump contest
All other will be outlaw !

But maybe even better : don't expect music, arches, audience... just expect some good skateboarding

fresh news: i will just keep this updated

SCHEDULE
saturday AM : outlaw parkslalom or outlaw slalom
saturday PM : official high jump contest on Esplanade / some freestyle
sunday AM : outlaw parkslalom or outlaw slalom
sunday PM: outlaw slalom or outlaw slalom
monday AM outlaw slalom or -maybe- official slalom
monday PM outlaw slalom or -maybe- official slalom

SPOTS
OFFICIAL :
=> Esplanade :
it is center place of the town, 100m*15m, little slope, it s not asphalt but a perfectly flat concrete, pretty slippery for slalom, but it s possible.
We will officialy make high jump contest there
We ask to have it as a backup spot on monday, but nothing's sure
OUTLAW :
=> skatepark de Poussan :
we can make a nice outlaw park race there; we will need to get there in the pretty morning (about 9:00) to make it before all the kids get in. Will be saturday AM or sunday AM
=> BIG SLOPE :
we find a road in a industrial zone, nice slope (near Trocadero), long, large for a dual race. It seems pretty quiet on sunday and monday.
good for all - It will be the 1st choice outlaw spot
=> PARKING LOT
it s a really big parking long, flat, large for a dual race, asphalt not so bad it seems, with a big covered place in case of rain. Quiet on sunday and monday
good for flat tight
=> CYCLING ROAD :
nice asphalt, pretty long, moderate slope, only for single line slalom
Good for single line hybrid slalom

last news

We already have nice outlaw spots. Anyway, the event will be!
Those outlaw spots are even better than officials, with a nice hill in an industrial zone where we can make long duals, and a nice spot for a 100 cones challenge.
We also have indoor and flat backup outlaw spots

Other point is that it seems to be moving on the authorities side.

There is more and more chance that we finally get the road closure autorization.
But hey, they already kill a part of our organisation. Maybe it will only be a nice last minute present... We don't want to expect anything, and we can't goes on with things like music on the spots, or arches..etc etc.
But it is always nice to have a race in the center of the town

Most registered french will be there, Italian team also!
15 people already confirm, it seems there will be more
I do not know if czech and spanish friends will be there! Will you?

We will decide last minute about the entry fees : it will not exceed 20 € for 3 days racing, teeshirt stickers and meals (always free for girls, and EU champions) . It will probably be less (it only depend on what food we will prepare for you)

Meeting will be on saturday morning, 9h00
I will annouce the meeting place later in the week

hi Antonio!

The event is just over for few hours... and it was EXCELLENT !
No problems on the outlaw spots, no rain all weekend (hard sun today) and 19 riders
Spots was really close to be perfect.

We made 4 slalom : hybrid single line, dual tight, dual special, and giant single line.
Saturday afternoon we had freestyle demo from Michel Dupond and Patrick Lozano, and we made a nice High jump contest (Vincent langlade jump over 135cm and failed on 140).
Today, after the last race (special) and lunch and overall ceremony, we all move to the skatepark for a bowl session.

I will sleep well tonigh for sure :D

Sandrine and I would like to thank you all for coming : our friends from France, Italia and Czech Rep ... thank you for supporting Meze Slalom! We hope you all have fun and hope to see you all soon!

Even if authorities gave us hard work, we will for sure try to make it again

Congrats to all the racers, we will post pictures and all complete results soon.
But I can say Michel owned all races, followed by Petr and Christopher at the overall.

Thank you all cone judges and racers who help during this WE.

Ok, time to relax

Guillaume

Helicopter landing zone? And people think the USA is too concerned with liability issues. :-(

Guillaume, I'm sorry to hear about the ridiculous obstacles you had to overcome just to have a slalom race. What a shame. But I congratulate you for communicating everything to the racers as best you could, and for figuring out a way to hold the races anyway. As Joe said, Bravo!

Thank you both!

Outlaw spots was far better than the official spot... so we do not loose anything in this issue (only some infrastructure we could have get on official : arches, music, electricity and audience)

Yes, one thing is sure is that we really take care about our kids categorie : they get dual races and even some easter chocolate eggs to find on the race site :)

We make really competitive races : spot was fast, and tight was tight

Complete results tonight, pictures and video to come.

I notice that in the single-lane events you based the results on the sum of each rider's best two times, instead of just on the one fastest time. I would like to see this become the standard way of doing most, if not all, single-lane races. Combining two times would greatly reduce the influence of headwinds or tailwinds on a racer's times. I think it would show more clearly who really was the fastest racer on that day.

If you want this to become the standard, then you might want to propose a rules change. The current ISSA rules call for the best time from 2 runs to count. (Similar to the qualifying for dual events).

Yes, i decide for this format watching the olympics ski slalom... it really works.
Racers are kept under pressure all the race.

But they all asked me for a third run :D

Pat, I'm still savoring the idea before proposing it formally. In the day-to-day busy-ness of my life (and my mind), perhaps there's some negative nuance of it I've failed to notice. It's something I think I'd like to see, but not (yet) enough to act on it.

The argument for taking the best of 2 runs is: Racers can REALLY go for it, because if they DQ, then at least one run will count. With sum of 2 runs, a DQ is extremely painful.

Meze 2010 - Thanks!

Post by Jani Soderhall » Sun Apr 11, 2010 10:22 pm

Thanks to everyone who made it a memorable weekend!

- Guillaume and Sandrine for the organization.
- Laure and Henrique for the accommodation, food and location.
- Michel, Johanna and Christopher for the starting ramps, and for the excellent racing! Very impressive both of you guys. (And thanks for the wine!)
- DiGiorgio parents for bringing their kids to the race.
- Laurent and Lucas - nice to meet you! Let us know which is the next race you're going to so that the kids can race again.
- Peter, Pavel, Anna and the sons for coming in from so far!
- and everyone else for being just who you are and providing such nice company and racing!

The kids were so sad they cried when we left for the airport. For sure we'll return in 2011.

/Jani

The event looked like a lot of fun for everyone. Nice demo pics as well!

Really good to see some of the kids with full safety equipment.
