St. Louis Memorial Day Race

Posted: Thu Dec 30, 2004 9:35 pm
by Jonathan Harms
Jani,
On May 29 and May 30, 2004, a small grassroots race was held in St. Louis, MO (USA Midwest). On May 29 we did a jam-style, single-lane hybrid course of approximately 40 (?) cones, and on May 30 we did a dual-lane straight slalom (i.e., there were no offset cones, although the road itself made an S-shaped turn). If I'm not mistaken, we had eight people riding: Jeff Goad, Jeff "Chainsaw" McCullar, Jon Seeger, Jeremy Jones, Paul Graf, Rick Stanziale, Tod Oles, and myself. First day was for time only (best single time wins), and second day we raced for $100.00, winner take all.

So the July 4th race this year will be a kids race though adults are allowed to register (no prizes for the adults though). The courses will be challenging though- and are set by kids- yet I find the courses they set to be some of the better thought out courses I have race on.

5-6 June. Not Brands Hatch! It's Silverstone.
28-30 August. Brands Hatch. (Not in the list)

Do you think we should have a separate thread for this contest schedule?

Perhaps even more prominent than the rest of the threads as a new comer should be drawn to a contest schedule early on. Entering Contests as a newbie definitely spurs the learning process.

I am slightly ahead of my recovery schedule- so July 4th looks good , I do wonder if racers might prefer racing in September 19th (Sunday) in the Boston Common.

Maria,

The Paris World Cup organization just threw in another gear and things will now be happening quickly. Expect to see announcements and an updated site along with online registration very soon. The team is very motivated and we've got everything sorted. Now we just need to get on with the work.

For Rimini, Italy, I talked to Gianluca Ferrero today, who participates in the organization of the slalom part and he has been reassured that the event will go on despite terrorist threats, a national election day etc. Their site is down due to a move during or before the next update.

Update on Europe

Just trying to check some facts, etc. about the string of four races starting in Paris end of May -- then to England, then to Italy, then to Switzerland. I would like to link potential sponsors to event information -- ie web sites.

So far, the Paris WC site is up but only in French. Any update on an English site? I know the locale for Brands has been changed. The S-Games web site (Italy) no longer works. Does anyone have a new link or is there some change to the plan? The Parallel in Switzerland site works great. Thanks.

If any of the organizers would be so kind to contact me -- I'd appreciate it. Trying to make travel plans, line up sponsors, etc. Thanks!! Hope to visit with you soon.

VALBERG SLALOMS
We organize, on Sunday May 9th. A national race in Valberg (Cote d'Azur/France). There will be giant slalom and tight parallel slalom.
This race count for French ranking but strangers racers are welcome.
Valberg is a little ski station about 90 minutes from Nice.

In the same week end we have on Friday evening our local
"MIDNIGHT BOARDER X CHALLENGE" which is an unofficial crazy little race by night in Antibes. On Saturday the "FREERIDE OF ROQUEBRUNE CAP MARTIN" one kilometer closed for longskate arrival near the sea. It's a few kilometer from MONTE CARLO and Italian frontier. On Sunday will be held the slalom day in Valberg.

I would like to make it known that myself and event manager Caleb Clark are no longer involved in this event. I was ripped off for many weeks work and caleb quite simply hasnt got the time to deal with idiots. We do not feel that the promoter is capable of running an event to Longleats high standards as he has absolutely no experience and is not being completely truthful with Longleats staff. We feel that this is likely to result in the event foundering and eliminating any possibility of a true racing event at Longleat at any point in the future. I take no pleasure in posting this and wish any of you who get involved in this event the best of luck.

I'd like to submit the Luna Slalom Jam 2004, which will be held in Jackson, Mississippi on Fondren Drive. The date is April 17th at 7:00 pm, that's right, at night.
This event is hosted by MS GRS and Red Bull Energy Drink.

Duel tight/hybrid slalom, start ramps, Trakmates latest time system, and big spectator crowd. Come have some fun with us down south.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After meeting with Red Bull today we are all set. The date is confirmed. We are working on getting a budget together for RB's part of the event. This budget will include a set number of rooms to be used by racers from out of town. We are going to be discussing start time. We want to move practice up to 5:30 and be racing by 6:30 or 7:00 so we can finish up around 10:00 and then hit the after party.
Breckenridge is the US Nationals for 2004. If you intend to capture a US title, make your plans for Breckenridge in August. Kenny, Palmer, Noah, Oyama, will be on hand to defend their titles.
Breck will include Dual GS, Dual TS, & CyberSlalom. We are also working with Timeship Racing/Joe Lemm to include a Downhill/SuperG event. There will be an Overall title as well from these four very different racing disciplines.
Entry fee will be $125 for all four events (this includes a T-shirt to entice the Brits).
Worlds 2004
No one has stepped up to organize a World Championship race in Jack's stead. I'm a little concerned with the void that has been left with Jack's departure from the race organization scene after the unfortunate events of last Fall, so I'm now PLEADING with you Jack, bring back the World Championships.
Morro Bay is ground zero for the rebirth of slalom and I think it should stay the home of the World Championships for at least another year. The town is accommodating, the location is great, and though the pavement hasn't been world class, the courses have been, (in no small part due to Paul Dunn's exquisite, and yet punishing, course design).
I encourage you guys to contact Jack (jack@videoactionsportsDOTcom) and offer your thoughts about the World Championships, and maybe your offer to help in whatever way you can (sponsorship, labor, promotion, cone heading). Maybe this will be enough to convince Jack to throw another race.
Oops I forgot to apply my own rule of Italic text on not yet confirmed events. As for the dates, it's out of my control. I hope it'll be a joint effort to keep the list updated and accurate.
Maria, adding yet another calendar is no problem. There more the better, as long as they stay reasonably updated. Your site is likely to attract non-slalomers, so it'll be good for them to see that there are slalom events out there and one day they might decide to join our group :)
To others, please keep out non-event related replies in this thread.
Calendar/Events Update
Posted: Tue Jan 06, 2004 6:27 pm
by Maria Carrasco
Hi Guys -- I think this is a great effort to help keep people informed about what's being planned. I check here all the time to see "what's up". I notice that some of the dates listed here are falling on "mid-week days" and want to know for sure if these are accurate dates on the 2004 calendar or if they are intended to be on weekend days? I've gone to the web links here and most don't have dates posted there yet though they are marked as confirmed here. Want to know for sure for personal travel planning arrangements but also for my on-line calendar as well.
I've just launched our improved website at SK8KINGS.COM and am adding a calendar. I want to maintain the calendar with confirmed events from all the skate disciplines since so many are involved in more than one type of skating. I am gathering event information from this and other calendar sources and bringing them together on SK8KINGS. Anyways, I would very much appreciate being added to your individual "update" lists when plans have been finalized for any events. The calendar program we found is free and will also allow public updates/additions through February 4 if anyone wants to stop by and add directly during that time.
Please know I am NOT trying to side-step the efforts being made here -- just trying to help further unify the flow of information across the "skate" borders.
Thanks for all your efforts and looking forward to seeing many of you soon at an upcoming event. ;)
So far I have an event from 22nd May in Antibes, 29 Paris, 5-6 Brands Hatch tbc, 12 - 13 Rimini, 19 - 20 Grüningen. 5 weekends away from home!!!
This make a great series, but could anyone make them all? Can I suggest that there should be three races visited to enter the series championship at the finals in September if Antibes is held again. If each event has two competitions then points can be allocated. This system worked well in the UK last year.
Jani,
Could you please remove the line in the listing for The 4th Gathering: Peace, Love and Pavement that says, "Slalom cross + maybe a GS or Super G". This is not something I put in, but something that somehow got transposed over from Jack's listing.
To be clear... there will be NO slalom-cross at The 4th Gathering, nor will there be a Super G. Anyone who has been to the gathering site knows we don't have a hill big enough to accomodate any of the major speed disciplines.
