ISSA - International Slalom Skateboarding Association

The proposed 2007 North America ISSA Calendar is shaping up.

We have already assigned 3 BASIC races, 2 PRIME, 1 MAIN, and 1 MAJOR

Now we get to the part where we look at the calendar for conflicts, balance and other factors.

There are two potential clashes of dates:

THREE MAIN in a row
23JUN -- Buckeye
01JUL -- Canadian Nationals
08JUL -- Hood River
I know that the Canadian Nationals date is firm (national holiday), and that the Hood River date is firm, so the question might be if the Buckeye can find a better date.

THREE PRIME in a row
27MAY Slalom St Louis
02JUN Oregon State Games
09JUN Colorado Cup
Of these three, only the Oregon State Games date is firm, with permits in hand and an ISSA sanction application. The others ?

So let's talk here about the proposed events, the dates, etc. It would be great to pretty much finalize the events and the dates by the end of February.

Open season for you to voice your preference for which event might get which status.

Yeah, we would like our racers to get some kinda points (Prime?), but it's time for us to pass the Main on to someone else.

For this particular contest (Red Clay Cup), we are in the loop of steps 5,6,7 which include ISSA asking for more information, Race Organizer supplying information/clarification, Comparison against other sanction applications.

For a MAIN contest, we needed to make a decision right away (due to time constraints) and this event did not measure up to the standards of a MAIN event. It can still be a candidate for PRIME or BASIC, but needs some discussion/persuasion, additional information.

I would very much welcome any discussion or additional information for the two areas of concern which are:
#1) Number of Events (A single GS race is proposed).
#2) Road closure during event (permit) -- this is unclear.

Your avenue to do this is with any (or all) of the N. America contest coordinators, by email, phone, or right here in this discussion area. Comments from racers who have been (or are planning to go) to this event would also be of benefit. Eddy Martinez, Chris Barker, and I are the contest coordinators and would be glad to talk to you about ways to take this event and get it a higher status level. It has some good things going for it. Maybe we don't understand everything about the event?

Until the deadline for PRIME or MAIN passes, you have all avenues available to try to persuade us that we were wrong in our initial look at this event....

Recieved an ISSA sanction application for ditch racing (outlaw) in New Mexico.

BASIC?

Should we consider this as one GS race per ditch?

I received a question from a race organizer in New Mexico where they like to race in ditches (banked concrete) rather than on roads or sidewalks.

If he applies for an ISSA sanction for his event (GS race on banked ditch), should it be considered just as though it were held on a street?

My personal opinion is YES, because the similarities outweigh the differences:
Cones, cone penalties, downhill incline, turns, speed, starting line, finish line, timing, long race course (compared to tight slalom) .... all of these are indistinguishable from a "normal" GS race.

But I'd like to hear other opinions on this.

Would it make a difference if he were applying for a higher status (MAJOR, MAIN), rather than a lower status (PRIME, BASIC, PLAIN) ??

What do we say, do events held on a ditch count?

The ISSA North America contest coordinators (Pat Chewning, Chris Barker, and Eddy Martinez) have received the following ISSA contest sanction for the Red Clay Cup race.

My initial reaction is that a MAIN race status should probably include at least 2 events, rather than just a GS race. Otherwise, it is perhaps not attractive enough for the top-level racers to invest in travel if they only get 1 race in.

Open to other opinions.

The contest organizer was informed that only a BASIC status could be awarded to this contest because:
A) Only 1 event
B) Unclear as to permits and insurance (So the road will be closed and available for racing)

When informed of this, the contest organizer withdrew the application for ISSA sanction.

For this year 2007, the ISSA is instituting an official sanctioning process for awarding contest status to the various events.

In N. America, the sanctioning process is being administered by a group of 3 people:
Chris Barker, top-ranked slalom racer, race promoter, and all-around great guy.
Eddy Martinez, captain of Lone-Star stoke, head of the Texas Outlaws, and grass-roots slalom promoter.
Pat Chewning, V.P. of the ISSA, developer of Chronocone timing system, CSA race organizer, and lower B-class racer.

Race promoters wishing to receive ISSA contest sanction for their event need to fill in a form and send it to one of the Contest Coordinators. The form can be obtained here:

Additionally, we have decided that rather than have 3 separate and competing regions (Canada, E. USA, W. USA) we will combine all of these into one N. America region. This is being done for the following reasons:
A) It is easier to administer one larger region than 3 smaller ones.
B) We can more easily award contest sanctions to areas of rapid growth, or transfer sanctions from a cancelled event in one area to a willing organizer in another area.
C) It was anticipated that it might be difficult to fully staff "Contest Coordinators" in 3 regions rather than in a single region.

Also: The ISSA is about to close the decision on how many MAIN and PRIME events will be allowed in the N. America region. Most likely it will look something like this:

1 MAJOR event
5 MAIN events
10 (perhaps 12) PRIME events

UPDATE: The above list of # of events is what we have allocated to N. America

So this topic area will be the place to discuss which events might get which status, and it will supercede the other topic areas (Region: W USA, Region: E USA, Region: Canada). Those other topic areas will soon be deleted once I figure out how to do that (and preserve the content that is there already).

It is our hope that these changes help promote a higher quality contest (especially for the MAJOR MAIN and PRIME status), more contests, and a uniform method of documenting what was promissed to be delivered by the contest organizer.
