Euros 2013 - First day, Tight slalom
Despite the heavy rain all morning racing eventually got underway with the Pro's warm up, qualifying and finals followed by the ladies and finally juniors. The Pro course was extremely fast, not technically difficult, but tight and fast making it hard to manage given the smooth fast surface of Hog Hill and the 64 cone length. About half of the Pro's double DQ'd leaving only 12 to battle it out in the eliminations. With so many DQs some of the usual top riders were simply out already in the quals. The head to head racing was awesome with several exciting rounds offering some surprises. Thiele eliminated, Gluschko advancing, Dominik eliminated etc. After a spectacular fall by Janis Kuzmins just after the finish line in a race against Mika and a never ending protest by Mika regarding cone counts, the finals were between Mika and Viking. Viking won the first Euro 2013 trophy, probably on better physical strength than father. A bruised Janis and Joe battled it out for third place.
Tight slalom, Pro top 8:
1. Viking Hadestrand, SWE
2. Mika Hadestrand, SWE
3. Janis Kuzmins, LAT
4. Joe McLaren, USA
5. Dominik Kowalski, GER
6. Ferdinand Lindner, GER
7. Oleg Glushko, RUS
8. Paul Price, GBR
In the ladies Kathrin took a bad fall, also after the finish line but could carry on just like Janis. With 8 women present it was among the best starting field we've seen in a European event in a long time; Lienite, Natalya, Anna and Eliza Gailitis, Ella, Erika and Tezzan. After the two qualifying rounds Kathrin was in the lead ahead of Lienite. In the juniors the top contenders were Petr Matous, Zaccaria DiGiorgio, Vitek Hromadko and Toms Dreiblats. After the qualifying of these two categories the race had to be stopped due to the site closing. There are chances the eims of these two categories will continue late Saturday, or late Sunday, weather permitting.
Women, qualifying, top 6:
1. Kathrin Sehl, GER
2. Lienite Skaraine, LAT
3. Natalya Dudina, RUS
4. Anna Gailite, LAT
5. Irene DiGiorgio, ITA
6. Eliza Gailite, LAT
Amateurs and Masters had a very long day waiting and waiting and the disappointment was big among these participantswhen the race day ended. Tomorrow's racing will start with the continuation of the tight for Ams and Masters (only quals) which will then be followed by the hybrid slalom. Unlike in the tight the hybrid and GS will be run using the same courses for all categories hopefully giving less DQs and smoother event management.

Wesley Tucker R.I.P.
News is spreading that Wesley Tucker has died. Wesley was a long term ISSA website administrator and former ISSA Board of Directors member. Wesley wasn't one of the top racers, nor was he internationally well known, but he loved slalom skateboarding and helped get many new riders into the sport. As a administrator he was constantly looking after the SlalomSkateboarder.com web site, always easily reachable, helping new members in and fending off the spammers and making sure topics were organized, images posted, avatars added and kept the site running smoothly contributing to the successful development of the International Slalom Skateboarding Association over the last decade.
There is going to be a memorial service for Wesley at the First Baptist Church of Charleston South Carolina 48 Meeting Street Charleston, S.C. - The memorial service will be held at 11:00 am this Friday (Aug 2nd) and it's open to all of Wesley's family and friends.
You are welcome to post and share your memories of Wesley here:
